New in Bruges (Belgium): Address Registration Sub-Municipalities and Daily Life

Bruges Guide
Arriving in Bruges, the Capital of West Flanders
The first few weeks
Bruges (Flemish: Brugge) is the capital of the Belgian province of West Flanders and, with around 120,000 inhabitants, its largest city. The medieval city centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, and in 2002 Bruges was European Capital of Culture. With the district of Zeebrugge, the municipality reaches the North Sea coast; the seaport lies about 14 km north of the centre. The official language is Dutch.
Within the EU there is no customs declaration for your household goods, but there are local rules for address registration, parking and waste – this guide sums them up. We come from Berlin and handle your home removal right up to your new front door in Bruges, with packing, transport and assembly. For your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Our long-distance moving guide further down describes the schedule and route.

What
Newcomers to Bruges Should Know
A move to Bruges comes with a few Belgian peculiarities: you only report your address once you actually live there, and a Wijkinspecteur later confirms it on site. The historic centre has its own parking and access rules, which, according to the city, will change from February 2027. Your German EU driving licence remains valid; check in advance how and when to register a car in Belgium. The city brings together information on schools, childcare and sport for new residents.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to Bruges
Centre and Sub-Municipalities – Where Newcomers Live in Bruges
Besides the historic centre, the municipality of Bruges includes sub-municipalities such as Sint-Andries, Sint-Michiels, Assebroek, Sint-Kruis, Koolkerke, Dudzele, Lissewege and Zeebrugge on the coast. The old town with the Grote Markt, the Belfry and the Burg is one of the best-preserved historic city centres in Europe and survived both world wars undamaged – which is why many streets and staircases there are so narrow.
We do not quote specific rents here, because they depend heavily on location and condition. Search via the large Belgian portals and estate agents and expect to pay a rental deposit. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and budget; before committing, also look at access and parking rules. We then plan our home removal accordingly.
Working, Studying and Living in Bruges
Bruges is the administrative seat of the province of West Flanders and a bishop's see; economically important are the seaport of Zeebrugge, trade, administration and tourism in the old town. The College of Europe has been based in Bruges since 1949, and in 1960 the city received the Europe Prize.
The A10/E40 motorway connects Bruges with Brussels and Ostend, and the A18 leads towards France. The North Sea coast is right on the doorstep. For new residents, the city brings together information on schools, childcare, libraries and sport; it describes car parks, the Centrumshuttle bus line and cycle routes on its mobility pages. Registration in Bruges: Reporting Your Address to the City of Brugge
In Bruges (Flemish: Brugge) in Belgium, registration is handled by the city. According to the city of Brugge, you report your address within eight working days of actually moving, online via the e-Loket or in person at a service point. An appointment is recommended to avoid waiting. An adult family member can report the change for the whole household. The condition is that you already actually live there at the time of reporting. Bring your eID with PIN.
If you come from abroad as a non-Belgian, according to the city you must first be registered with the municipality before you can apply for a residence document. EU citizens staying for a maximum of 90 days report their presence to the municipality. Clarify documents, appointments and costs with the Huis van de Bruggeling (phone 050 44 8000, [email protected]).
A Wijkinspecteur then checks whether you really live at the address, usually within a month. Only after a positive check is the address changed in the population register; you are then invited to have the address updated on your eID or residence card. Until then, you can apply for a provisional resident's parking permit. As of: October 2026.

Daily Life in Bruges: Parking, Waste and Recycling Centres
For newcomers, parking matters most in everyday life. According to the city of Brugge, a Parkvergunning (parking permit) is required in some neighbourhoods, for example in the centre and in certain blue zones. You can apply online or at the Huis van de Bruggeling. Residents of the centre can also use parking codes for visitors. Important for planning: the city's parking page notes that traffic and parking rules will change from 16 February 2027. Check the current rules on brugge.be/mobiliteit/parkeren before you move in.
For waste, the rule is: only regulation waste bags are collected. After the address change you receive a waste calendar; a new one arrives by post every year, and it is available online in the Recycle! app. Larger amounts go to the IVBO recycling centres in Sint-Michiels, Sint-Pieters and Zeebrugge. On brugge.be/mobiliteit you will also find car parks, the Centrumshuttle bus line and tips on cycling. The city also offers "Geen reclame" (no advertising) stickers for your letterbox. For new residents, it also brings together information on schools, childcare, libraries and sports.
When planning, also consider neighbouring cities: how daily life works in Antwerp is described in the Living in Antwerp guide. The journey from Germany is explained in the long-distance moving guide for Bruges.
