Bellinzona: Ticino's Capital Beneath Three Castles
The first few weeks
A move to Bellinzona is the start of life in a city with three castles that have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, a Mediterranean flair and an Alpine backdrop. Bellinzona is the capital of the canton of Ticino; since the 2017 merger with twelve neighbouring municipalities, the city has 13 quartieri (quarters), from the old town around the Piazza Collegiata to Giubiasco and Sementina. Italian is spoken, including at the authorities. We clarify narrow access in the old town and parking before moving day; we give you the fixed price after a survey.
We set off from Berlin-Moabit and bring your household goods from Germany to Bellinzona; at the border you present form 18.44 for removal goods. Read more about long routes on our long-distance moves page. Whether it is a block of flats in Ravecchia or a flat overlooking Castelgrande: on request we take care of packing, transport and assembly. Details of the services are on the home removal page. For your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available.

Bellinzona
for Newcomers
Moving to Bellinzona involves a few local peculiarities: the old town, with its narrow, partly cobbled streets, often requires smaller transport vehicles or an intermediate stage. If you are moving from Germany or German-speaking Switzerland, you should allow for the Italian-speaking administration – registration at the Cancelleria comunale, the e-cittadino portal and the Bellinzona360 card. For waste disposal there are Ecocentri and Ecopunti in the quartieri. We support you with practical tips on registration, parking permits and the route for your furniture transport.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Bellinzona
Housing Market and Districts in Bellinzona
As the capital of the canton of Ticino, Bellinzona offers a compact but varied housing landscape. In the historic old town around the Piazza Collegiata there are flats in older buildings beneath the castles; the quarters of Daro, Ravecchia and Carasso have been part of the city since 1907. Since the 2017 merger, twelve municipalities have joined, including Giubiasco, Sementina, Monte Carasso and Claro, with more village-like locations and detached houses. We do not quote specific rents, because we have no reliable current source.
In Ravecchia, the Museo Villa dei Cedri shows the city's art collection; the village church of San Biagio contains frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. If you prefer things quieter, you will find flats on the hillsides above the city with views of the three castles and the Ticino valley. Starting your search early pays off, especially in central locations near the station.
Working and Living in Bellinzona
Bellinzona is the administrative seat of the canton of Ticino, with many jobs in the cantonal administration; according to Wikipedia, the SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) with its workshops is the main employer. The city is also home to the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) and the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI), as well as colleges of higher education for hospitality and tourism and for business. Local industry is based mainly on mechanical engineering.
Bellinzona is a transport hub: the Gotthard railway runs through the station to Chiasso, the A2 motorway connects with Basel and Lugano, and the A13 ends here. Quality of life shows in the Mediterranean climate, short distances, the three castles and the Rabadan carnival, which attracts thousands every year. Hiking in the surrounding mountains and the cuisine of the old town round off the picture. The three castles house their own museums – Castelgrande, for example, has a historical and archaeological exhibition – a good first outing after moving in. The agglomeration is the third largest in the canton after Lugano and Locarno.
Honest prices for your move
We believe in transparency: 1-room flats from €349, 2-room flats from €605, 3-room flats from €909, 4-room flats from €1,279. If you live in a house or villa, we prepare an individual quote for you. For long-distance moves: from €3.85/km. Arrange a free survey today.
These factors determine the moving costs
How much your move costs depends mainly on the amount of household goods and the distance to be covered, which is charged at €3.85/km. Then there is the floor of your flat and whether there is a lift. Setting up a parking restriction zone also plays a role, as do extra services such as furniture assembly or a shared load.

Registering in Bellinzona: Cancelleria comunale and Online Portal
For arrival and residence registration, the City of Bellinzona refers on its website to the section «Arrivi e partenze» (arrivals and departures). The point of contact is the Cancelleria comunale, Piazza Nosetto 5, 6500 Bellinzona, phone 058 203 10 00, email [email protected]. The city's page states neither a registration deadline nor a list of documents. So clarify by phone before you move which deadline applies and what you need to bring. The municipal pages are written in Italian, so a quick query is also worthwhile for language reasons. On the pages «Arrivi e partenze» and «Notifiche di domicilio», the city likewise names only the Cancelleria comunale as the contact.
Many dealings with the authorities can be done on the e-cittadino portal. According to the city, you can request certificates there, view the status of your tax account, pay for services such as green waste disposal and order the Bellinzona360 card. This is how registration works:
- On the portal, choose «Richiedi accesso» (request access) and confirm your surname, first name, date of birth and AHV number.
- You receive the access code by registered letter.
- Once you have it, choose «Registrati» (register) and enter the code, email address and password.
Because the code is sent by post, allow a few days. Questions about the portal are answered at [email protected]. How the move from Germany is organised is explained in the guide to the long-distance move to Bellinzona.
Quarters and Waste Disposal in Bellinzona: 13 Districts and the Ecocentri
In 2017 Bellinzona merged with twelve former municipalities. Today the city has 13 quartieri: Bellinzona, Camorino, Claro, Giubiasco, Gnosca, Gorduno, Gudo, Moleno, Monte Carasso, Pianezzo, Preonzo, Sant'Antonio and Sementina. According to the city (as of the end of 2025), 20,231 people live in the Bellinzona quarter, 9,684 in Giubiasco and 132 in Moleno. Which location suits you therefore depends heavily on the quarter; our moving guide for Bellinzona helps you weigh them up.
Waste disposal runs via 9 Ecocentri and 52 Ecopunti. According to the city, the Ecocentro in Carasso (via Riale Righetti) is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 11.30 am and from 1.30 pm to 4.45 pm, and on Thursdays from 1.30 pm to 4.45 pm (until 8 pm in summer). The Ecopunti are accessible daily from 7 am to 9 pm. As identification, the city requires the Bellinzona360 card or the invoice for the basic waste fee.
You deliver bulky waste yourself: the Ecocentri do not accept amounts over 300 kilograms or 5 cubic metres, and trade and commercial businesses are excluded. The page contains no information on booking or costs. Queries go to the Settore Servizi urbani e ambiente (urban services and environment department), phone 058 203 16 40. For larger clearances, our team takes care of the house clearance.
