Living in Eisenstadt: districts rents, registration

Guide for newcomers
Arriving in Eisenstadt: state capital by the Leitha Mountains
Life in Burgenland
Eisenstadt is the capital of Burgenland and, with 16,396 inhabitants (early 2026), Austria's smallest state capital. The town lies at the southern foot of the Leitha Mountains, on whose slopes grow vines, apricots and almonds; Esterházy Palace and Joseph Haydn shape its cultural life. As a statutory city (Freistadt), Eisenstadt is its own district administration. This guide shows what newcomers deal with in the first few weeks: registration form, flat hunting, city buses, parking and waste disposal.
We have no branch in Austria; we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). It is around 737 km to Eisenstadt via Dresden, Prague, Brno and Vienna, about eleven and a half hours by lorry including breaks. There are no customs duties within the EU. We plan your private move at a fixed price after a survey. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Eisenstadt.

Your fixed price for Eisenstadt
Survey, fixed price, liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB)

Parking the removal van, assembly and storage appear as separate items in the quote. We are liable for damage under § 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB). Call us on 01625978461.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

How we prepare your move
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Burgenland
We drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit to Eisenstadt and therefore clarify in advance what matters on arrival day: the pedestrian zone and short-stay parking zone in the town centre, access to a house on the Oberberg, a farmstead in St. Georgen or Kleinhöflein. Where the removal van cannot stop, we ask the municipal authority (Magistrat) about the rules. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. We set the delivery day so that you can register within three days.

In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day.

First
steps in your new home town
In Austria you register within three days of moving into your accommodation. In Eisenstadt this is done in person at the registration and passport office in the Magistrat on Hauptstraße; it is not possible by email or fax. Registration is free of charge. After that come nursery or school, parking in the short-stay zone and your first trip to the recycling centre (Altstoffsammelzentrum). You get around on four city bus routes, regional buses from Domplatz and trains towards Vienna. What the town says about this is set out below.

Frequently asked questions about settling in Eisenstadt
Town centre, Oberberg, St. Georgen – the districts
The municipality comprises three localities: Eisenstadt itself with around 10,500 inhabitants, the wine village of Kleinhöflein to the west (incorporated in 1971, just over 3,000 inhabitants) and St. Georgen am Leithagebirge to the east (around 2,800). In cadastral terms, Oberberg-Eisenstadt and Unterberg-Eisenstadt also belong to it. The town centre around Esterházy Palace, Hauptstraße and the pedestrian zone offers short distances to shops and public offices.
On the Oberberg to the west stand the Bergkirche with its Calvary and the Haydn Mausoleum. Unterberg was the Jewish quarter; the Austrian Jewish Museum and the old Jewish cemetery are located there. In St. Georgen, farmsteads from the 17th and 18th centuries with large gateways recall the tradition of the Heurige wine taverns. To the south the land slopes down to the Wulka plain, where the town has grown in newer residential areas.
Work, learning and leisure
As the state capital, Eisenstadt is the seat of the Burgenland state government, the state parliament and many state authorities and courts – public administration is an important employer. Then there are the hospital of the Brothers of St John of God (Barmherzige Brüder), schools, retail, wine-growing and tourism around Esterházy Palace. For studying there are the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, the University College of Teacher Education Burgenland and the Joseph Haydn Private University. Many people commute to Vienna via the S31 expressway and the A3 or by Regional-Express train.
Cultural life revolves around Haydn: the Haydn House, the Haydn Festival and the concerts at the palace. In summer there is the Festival of 1000 Wines in the pedestrian zone, the palace park with the Leopoldine Temple and walks in the Leitha Mountains; the Wulka flows on to Lake Neusiedl. The town has had no cinema since 2011. For flat hunting we don't quote rents without a reliable source; compare listings and offers from non-profit housing developers.

Registering in Eisenstadt: registration form, three-day deadline and Magistrat
According to the statutory city of Eisenstadt, anyone moving into accommodation in Eisenstadt must register within 3 days of moving in. Registration should be done in person at the registration and passport office in the Magistrat, Hauptstraße 35 (phone +43 2682 705 0). Registration by email or fax is not possible. For questions about opening hours and contacts, the town can help at [email protected]; the current times are on the "Opening hours" page of eisenstadt.gv.at.
Each person, including minor children, needs their own registration form (Meldezettel). On registration, you and your accommodation provider (Unterkunftgeber) both sign; on deregistration, the accommodation provider's signature is not needed. You must also bring official photo ID, i.e. a driving licence, passport or ID card. Registering, deregistering and changing your registration are free of charge.
Additional services are subject to a fee: the town states €2.10 for a confirmation of registration (local register) or €3 (central register), and depending on the purpose a certificate fee may be added. An appointment is required for passport and ID card matters. You can also reach the registration and passport office at [email protected]. The "Meldezettel" form is available as a PDF download on the town's website, so you can fill it in in advance. If you are coming from Vienna or from Germany, the guide to long-distance moving to Eisenstadt will help you plan.
