Moving to Eisenstadt: a guide to Burgenland's state capital
Guide
With around 15,000 inhabitants, Eisenstadt is Austria's smallest state capital and lies at the foot of the Leitha Mountains (Leithagebirge), about 50 kilometres south of Vienna. The town is shaped by Esterházy Palace and by Joseph Haydn, who worked here for many years. Besides the town centre, the municipality includes the cadastral communities of Oberberg-Eisenstadt, Kleinhöflein and St. Georgen am Leithagebirge. Anyone moving here will find short distances and good links to Vienna.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 737 km via Dresden, Prague and Brno, past Vienna and on the A3 to Eisenstadt. By lorry that takes about eleven and a half hours including breaks, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. Within the EU your household goods need no customs papers. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including the return trip to Berlin. Whether an old-town flat or a house in Kleinhöflein: we clarify access and parking space beforehand. The route: Move Berlin – Eisenstadt.

What we handle on your move to Eisenstadt
Fixed price after a survey
We have no branch in Eisenstadt; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether a period building near Esterházy Palace, a flat in Oberberg or a detached house in St. Georgen. We clarify in good time whether the lorry needs a permit from the city authority (Magistrat). We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuable items.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Eisenstadt
Districts and housing market in Eisenstadt
Eisenstadt is divided into several cadastral communities of very different character. The town centre impresses with historic buildings around Esterházy Palace, narrow lanes and short distances to shops and public offices. In Oberberg-Eisenstadt and Kleinhöflein, detached houses and newer residential complexes dominate, ideal for families who want a garden. The district of St. Georgen scores with its quiet location near the vineyards and good links to the expressway towards Vienna.
Rents in Eisenstadt are well below Viennese levels, which makes the town particularly attractive to commuters. If you want to buy, you will still find comparatively inexpensive plots on the outskirts, while central old-town properties are in greater demand. Given the town's manageable size, it is advisable to contact local estate agents or the municipality early. Our team will gladly help with the logistical planning as soon as your new home is confirmed.
Working and living in Burgenland's state capital
As the seat of Burgenland's administration, Eisenstadt offers numerous jobs at the Burgenland state government, the state hospital and various public institutions. FH Burgenland (University of Applied Sciences) and the University College of Teacher Education Burgenland also attract students and young professionals to the town, which makes for a lively, multi-generational townscape. The regional wine industry around Lake Neusiedl also plays an important economic role and accounts for many jobs in tourism and hospitality.
Quality of life in Eisenstadt benefits from short distances, good childcare and the proximity of Lake Neusiedl as a local recreation area. Culturally, the town is shaped by the musical heritage of Joseph Haydn, visible among other places in the Haydn House and the Bergkirche. If you are looking for peace, nature and still a functioning infrastructure, Eisenstadt is an attractive place to live with a direct link to the federal capital, Vienna.

Parking restrictions and road permits in Eisenstadt: the Magistrat's responsibility
The Magistrat is responsible for roads and public spaces in Eisenstadt (Hauptstraße 35, 7000 Eisenstadt, phone +43 2682 705 0). The town does not have a dedicated information page on its website for parking restrictions during a move. Instead, two procedures for using public roads are described:
- Special use of public land: According to the town, written consent under § 37 of the Burgenland Road Act (Burgenländisches Straßengesetz) is granted by the Building & Roads department (building and traffic authority). A plan and photos of the current state must be enclosed with the application. For the use, the Finance & Controlling department charges a usage fee per m² and day; the town does not give an amount there.
- Work on and next to the road (§ 90 StVO): According to the town, this permit can only be applied for by the construction company carrying out the work. It is intended for building sites, not for private moves.
So it is best to clarify in advance with the Magistrat's traffic department (email [email protected]) whether an order or permit is needed for your moving day. The town does not specify a fixed lead time, so enquire early and have the street, house number, date and the approximate length of the removal van to hand. We help you with the parking restriction zone and explain the process in the guide Applying for a parking restriction zone.
Parking, Meldezettel and bulky waste in Eisenstadt around moving day
According to the town of Eisenstadt, a paid short-stay parking zone applies in the town centre, which was extended to the Bergkirche (Oberberg) in 1998. It is in force from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon; the maximum parking time is 3 hours. According to the town, the charge is currently 0.70 euros for the first half hour. So plan your loading and unloading outside these times or with an approved reservation, and bear in mind that helpers and vehicles in this zone may otherwise incur charges.
After moving in, you must register within 3 days of occupying the accommodation. According to the town, each person, including each minor child, needs their own registration form (Meldezettel); when registering, tenant and landlord sign, and you also need an official photo ID. Registration is done in person; registering, deregistering and changing your registration are free of charge.
For bulky waste, the town names the recycling centre (Altstoffsammelzentrum, phone 02682 / 64 148); questions about collection dates are answered by the Magistrat's citizens' service office. According to the town, residual waste bags (60 litres) cost 3.90 euros each. More about everyday life can be found in our guide Living in Eisenstadt, and the route from Berlin is described in the article Long-distance move Berlin – Eisenstadt.
