New on the Westerschelde: Your First Weeks in Vlissingen

Arriving in Vlissingen
Vlissingen for Newcomers: A Port Town on the Boulevard
First steps
A move to Vlissingen takes you to the Westerschelde, to a port town with a seafront boulevard, shipyards and a university. If you come from Germany and stay longer than four months, you register in person with the municipality within five days of arrival and then receive your citizen service number. We take care of the transport with our home removal service – at a fixed price after a survey. This guide explains what comes next.
Vlissingen has the historic Binnenstad (old town) with narrow streets by the water, plus residential neighbourhoods such as Paauwenburg, Lammerenburg or West-Souburg, which has grown together with the town. Before moving day, clarify where the van can stop and which of the four parking zones your street is in. We set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and take care of packing, transport and assembly; how a move across the border works is explained under International Moves.

What Works Differently in Vlissingen
Registration, BSN, Waste, Parking
If you move to Vlissingen, you arrive in a port town with around 46,000 inhabitants at the mouth of the Westerschelde. Three things work differently from Germany: registration must take place within five days, without a BSN there is neither health insurance nor a bank account, and since November 2025 you need the Zeeuwse Afvalpas (Zeeland waste pass) for the Milieustraat (recycling centre). We set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and take care of transport; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Routes from Berlin can be found under Long-Distance Moves, and other destinations in the locations overview.

Six steps after moving in
Antique furniture, a piano or paintings need good padding and secure straps on the long journey to the coast. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; if an item is worth more, additional insurance is worthwhile. After that, these six steps await you in Vlissingen.

After moving into Vlissingen, registering with the Gemeente comes first: only with the citizen service number (BSN) can you sort out health insurance, a bank account and school enrolment. Then come the waste calendar, the Afvalpas and, if applicable, the parking permit for your zone. For the journey itself, we take care of packing, dismantling and assembly; if there is a gap between moving out and moving in, storage can help.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Vlissingen
Neighbourhoods in Vlissingen: Where Newcomers Look
The historic Binnenstad around the Beursplein and the de Ruyter, Evertsen and Bankert boulevards offers period buildings, cafés and views of the Westerschelde – and little space for a removal van. Quieter places to live are Paauwenburg with Westduin on the edge of town, Groot-Lammerenburg or neighbourhoods such as Bossenburgh and Westerzicht. Many students look in the area around the Kenniswerf, where HZ University is based.
Families often find more space in Oost-Souburg – with around 10,000 inhabitants one of the largest districts – and in West-Souburg, which has grown together with Vlissingen; Ritthem is more village-like. The municipality does not publish reliable average rents per neighbourhood, so we do not give a figure. For a move to any of these neighbourhoods, we take care of planning and transport with our home removal service.
Working and Studying in Vlissingen
Vlissingen is shaped by the maritime sector: in the port and industrial area of Vlissingen-Oost, which is part of the cross-border North Sea Port, logistics and industry are at work, and in the town Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding builds ships. HZ University of Applied Sciences, formerly Hogeschool Zeeland, offers practice-oriented degree courses, including in engineering and hydraulic engineering. The provincial capital Middelburg is right next door and broadens the range of jobs.
Vlissingen is the terminus of the Zeeuwse Lijn (Zeeland line): Intercity trains run via Roosendaal directly to Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam. By car, the A58 leads via Goes and Bergen op Zoom towards Eindhoven. In everyday life, the beach promenade, the wind and the cargo ships on the Westerschelde shape life – for many, the reason to move to the coast deliberately.

From Berlin to the Netherlands
We set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and also travel to the Netherlands. How we plan a move across the border is explained under International Moves; you can find other destinations in the locations overview and routes under Long-Distance Moves.
Vlissingen: Registering at the Stadskantoor Within Five Days
If you move to Vlissingen from abroad and stay longer than four months, according to the Gemeente Vlissingen you must report to the municipality in person within five days of arrival. Your partner and children who are being registered with you come along. For this registration, the municipality gives the phone number 14 0118; in general, the Stadskantoor (Paul Krugerstraat 1) works by appointment only, which can be booked online via vlissingen.mijnafspraakmaken.nl. It is open Monday to Wednesday from 8.30 am to 5 pm, on Thursdays until 8 pm and on Fridays from 8.30 am to 12 noon.
You should bring:
- an ID document for each person being registered,
- for foreign nationals, a valid IND residence document if applicable,
- marriage, divorce or death certificates, if applicable,
- foreign certificates for you and your children, which must be no older than one year,
- a signed tenancy or purchase agreement, or alternatively a signed declaration of consent together with the ID of the main occupant or owner.
Certificates that are in neither Dutch nor English require a translation by a sworn translator. After registering, you receive your citizen service number (BSN). According to nederlandwereldwijd.nl, you need it for health insurance, a bank account and school enrolment, and Dutch basic health insurance may have to be taken out within four months of arrival.
If you already live in the Netherlands and are only moving within the country, according to the municipality you can report the move up to four weeks in advance; after moving in you have five days. This can be done online via “Direct regelen”, at the counter or with the “Aangifte verhuizing” (notification of move) form. Everyone aged 16 and over may register themselves.
Vlissingen in Daily Life: Bulky Waste, Milieustraat and Parking Zones
After moving in, there is bulky waste. The municipality collects bulky waste (wood, furniture and the like) only for a fee; you book by phone on 14 0118. For 2026, the municipality gives a starting price of €50.39 per cubic metre, up to 2 m³ per collection. The items must be on the pavement by 7.30 am on the agreed day, not in the garden, and no bags, boxes, glass or building rubble are taken. Mattresses, white and brown goods, metals and garden waste, on the other hand, are collected free of charge by appointment.
If you take things yourself, use the Milieustraat at Poortersweg 30. Since 1 November 2025 you have needed the Zeeuwse Afvalpas there; it is only issued to residents of addresses in Zeeland who pay waste charges. Current opening hours are on zrd.nl, and the municipality can help with questions on (0118) 49 03 40. You can find collection dates in the municipality's 2026 waste calendar, which also refers to the Afvalwijzer app.
For residents' parking, Vlissingen has four zones, A to D, which your parking permit specifies; the municipality answers questions at [email protected]. How to make space for the van on moving day is explained under Parking Restriction Zone. Further guidance is offered by the Vlissingen moving guide and our guide Living in Middelburg.
