New in the Ergolz Valley: How to Settle In to Liestal
The first few weeks
Liestal is the capital of the canton of Basel-Landschaft and lies in the Ergolz valley; the landmark of the old town is the upper gate, the Törli, on Rathausstrasse. From the station on the Hauenstein line, trains run directly to Basel, Zurich, Bern and Lucerne, and the Waldenburg railway leads into the Upper Baselbiet. On the Monday of Fasnacht (carnival), burning brooms and fire wagons pass through the upper gate during the Chienbäse. This guide sorts out your first weeks: registration, permit, health insurance, parking and waste disposal. We handle the transport as a home removal.
We have no branch in Switzerland: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Liestal and back. To cross the border you need form 18.44 and an inventory list; removal goods that you have used for at least six months remain duty-free. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). The route and customs are described on the page Moving Berlin – Liestal.

Before Moving Day in Liestal
Customs, access, stairwell
We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Liestal. Before moving day we go through form 18.44 and the inventory list for customs near Basel with you, check whether an access permit from the city is needed for Rathausstrasse or a street with a driving ban, and how steep and narrow the stairwell in the old building is. At night and on Sundays and public holidays, driving bans for heavy lorries apply in Switzerland; we set the delivery day accordingly. We give you the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Liestal
Neighbourhoods in Liestal
Liestal was founded in the 13th century; the older settlement of Munzach, dating back to Roman times, was abandoned for it and is now a neighbourhood of the town. The old town with Rathausstrasse and the Törli is the historic centre; for Rathausstrasse and streets with a driving ban, the removal lorry needs an access permit. Around the station lie Oristal and the lower suburb, and further down the valley Frenkendorf and Füllinsdorf adjoin.
Liestal has grown strongly in recent years, and new flats have been built under several neighbourhood plans. More than half of the town's area is forest. We deliberately do not give reliable rent figures – compare offers, have your application dossier with a debt enforcement extract (Betreibungsauszug) ready and check the route to the station and work before you sign. Property owners and management companies must report every move in and out to the city; so ask early for the necessary forms, such as the move-in confirmation (Bestätigung Einzug). If you live in an old-town house, you should also clarify where bicycles, pushchairs and your cellar compartment will fit.
Working, Commuting and Leisure in Liestal
As the cantonal capital, Liestal is the seat of the cantonal administration of Basel-Landschaft; in addition there are many small and medium-sized businesses, the cantonal hospital and educational institutions such as the cantonal library. From Liestal station on the Hauenstein line, trains run directly to Basel, Zurich, Bern and Lucerne; the city has announced an S3 running every quarter of an hour to Basel. Liestal is connected to the motorway network via the A22, and the Waldenburg railway and bus lines serve the Upper Baselbiet.
Culture is offered by the Poets' and Town Museum (Dichter- und Stadtmuseum), Fasnacht with the Chienbäse and cultural venues in the old town; forest and the Jura heights begin right at the edge of town. In everyday life, a bicycle station and Mobility car sharing help, which the city names alongside rail and bus. For families there are five day-care centres and childcare vouchers from the city. We set the moving date to match the handover of your flat and your registration with the residents' services.
Moving Prices by Flat Size and Distance
The exact costs of your move depend on several factors. The following prices serve as a rough guide: 1-room flat from €375, 2-room flat from €584, 3-room flat from €879, 4-room flat from €1,279. For larger properties such as a house or villa we draw up an individual quote. If you are moving further away, long-distance moves from €4.20/km apply. Feel free to arrange a free survey to clarify all the details.
What Determines the Price for Liestal
Besides the volume of your furniture and boxes, the distance (from €4.20/km) plays a central role in pricing. Added to this are the floor, lift and the need for a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone). If you also need furniture assembly or a shared load, you should factor this into the calculation.

- in many cases by email to [email protected], with all documents attached
According to the city, registration is free of charge; a registration certificate (certificate of residence or stay) costs 20 francs. It is based on the checklist for arrival/change of address, which the city provides as a PDF; if spouses live separately, a confirmation of voluntary separation is added. Property owners and management companies must report every move in and out; as further forms, the city names the move-in confirmation (Bestätigung Einzug) and the change-of-tenant notice (Meldung Mieterwechsel).
