Moving to Liestal: cantonal capital in the Ergolz valley
Living in the Baselbiet
Liestal is the capital of the canton of Basel-Landschaft and lies around 15 km south-east of Basel in a Jura valley on the Ergolz; the Frenke and the Orisbach flow into it within the town. More than half of the municipal area is forest. Neighbouring municipalities include Frenkendorf, Lausen, Bubendorf and Seltisberg. In the old town around the Rathausstrasse, the removal van needs an access permit, according to the town. For your home move we clarify access and carrying distances in advance. We answer frequently asked questions briefly and specifically further below.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 881 km via the A5 and Basel to Liestal, about 13 hours by lorry including breaks – so with two drivers or an overnight stop. Your household goods are declared at the border as removal goods with form 18.44, and clearance takes place on weekdays. After arrival you register with the residents' registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle) within 14 days. We give you the fixed price after a survey. More on the route in the long-distance moving guide for Liestal. We plan the way back to Berlin in the same way.

What we handle on a move to Liestal
From Berlin to the Ergolz valley
We have no branch in Switzerland; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify in advance whether your address is on a street for which an access permit is required – such as the Rathausstrasse – and how close the vehicle can get to the front door. We pack, carry, transport and assemble; we put the inventory list for customs together with you. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Liestal
Liestal at a glance: old town, valley and slopes
Liestal lies in a Jura valley on the Ergolz, which flows through the town from the south-east to the north; the Frenke, Orisbach and Rösernbach join it on Liestal's territory. The lowest point is at 287 m, the highest at 614 m near the Schleifenberg tower. Of the 1,818 ha municipal area, 1,067 ha are forest. The old town with the Rathausstrasse lies in the valley, while residential areas stretch up the slopes. For the move this means: in the old town the vehicle needs an access permit, and on the slopes gradient and road width matter. Which area suits you depends on your commute, school and budget; we plan the transport to suit the address.
Living and working in Liestal
Liestal is part of the Basel agglomeration; many people work in Basel or in the region. As the cantonal capital, Liestal is the seat of the cantonal administration. We do not give specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition; search via Swiss property portals and prepare proof of income and an extract from the debt enforcement register (Betreibungsauszug). You need a tenancy agreement for registration, so the flat should be secured before the moving date. It is best to plan giving notice in Berlin, crossing the border on a weekday, registration within 14 days and health insurance within three months backwards from moving-in day.

Liestal: access, parking cards and permits for the removal van
In Liestal it is best to clarify access for the removal van early with the town. According to the town of Liestal, an access permit (Zufahrtsbewilligung) is required for access to the Rathausstrasse, for streets with a driving ban and in the forest area. If your new address is on such a street, you should apply for it before the moving date. According to our research, the town has no specific page on removal vans; the town administration is the right point of contact: Rathausstrasse 36, telephone 061 927 52 52, [email protected] (entrance via the Salzgasse).
According to the town, the administration can be reached on Mondays from 7:30 to 11:30, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:30, on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 16:30 and on Fridays from 8:00 to 11:30.
Under the parking ordinance, anyone parking their vehicle on public land needs a parking card if it stands there for more than two days a week or for longer than 30 consecutive days. Residents without generally accessible parking options can buy a residents' or night parking card. Switzerland is not an EU member state; for your belongings from Germany, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) is therefore the customs authority.
We check during the survey which streets, carrying distances and floors you can expect. More on moving abroad under international move.
Liestal: registering with the Einwohnerkontrolle after arrival
After arrival you register with the town of Liestal. The town sets a deadline of 14 days from arrival for this; according to the page, late registration can result in fines of up to CHF 5,000. You can register at the counter of the Einwohnerkontrolle, by email to [email protected] or electronically via the canton of Basel-Landschaft's eUmzug service. You can reach the residents' services on 061 927 52 26.
Important for the process:
- Anyone registering at the counter must have deregistered in their previous municipality of residence
- A checklist for newcomers helps you bring all the documents
- If registering by email, send all the necessary documents as attachments
If you live apart from your spouse or partner, the "confirmation of voluntary separation" (Bestätigung freiwillige Trennung) is added. According to the town, the eUmzug online tool serves the personal obligation to report moves within Switzerland; there is a separate entry for moves within Liestal. Registration is free of charge. According to the town, a registration certificate (certificate of residence or of stay) costs CHF 20.-.
It is best to plan registration straight after moving in. You will find everything about everyday life in the town in the guide for newcomers to Liestal; how we organise the move from Berlin is described in the guide to a long-distance move to Liestal.
