Vlissingen for newcomers
Life at the estuary: Vlissingen and its wijken
Arriving in Zeeland
A move to Vlissingen takes you to the south coast of the Walcheren peninsula in Zeeland, where the Western Scheldt (Westerschelde) flows into the North Sea. The port town is the birthplace of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, whose statue stands on the boulevard, and has a long shipbuilding and port history. If you move here, you will find the Binnenstad (town centre) with its boulevard and beach, quieter residential neighbourhoods such as Paauwenburg or Lammerenburg and, in Souburg, a village centre of its own. We are based in Berlin and accompany your long-distance move to Vlissingen from planning to the last box.
Our team organises your move at a fixed price after a survey – transport, packing and furniture assembly; there are no customs formalities within the EU. Via our private move service you can add storage and the no-parking zone in Berlin on request. For the long route from Berlin, read more under long-distance moves. Your household goods are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (€620 per m³).

What we clarify before you move into Vlissingen
Residents' zone, boulevard, dates
Outside the paid parking spaces, Vlissingen's Binnenstad is a residents' zone; seasonal access rules apply on the boulevard, and lorries over six metres may only park at designated places outside working days. Before the move to Vlissingen we therefore clarify access and the stopping place with the gemeente. We are based in Berlin and have no office in the Netherlands; your household goods are covered by liability under the HGB. Further destinations are shown in our locations overview.

Only one room for Vlissingen? Part load!
If you are only bringing one room or a few pieces of furniture to Vlissingen, for example for studying at the HZ, a part load is often cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments heading to the Netherlands. In return the delivery day is somewhat more flexible.

Questions about living in and moving to Vlissingen
An overview of Vlissingen's wijken
The Binnenstad lies between the old harbour basins and the boulevard, on which the statue of Michiel de Ruyter stands; there are also the Gevangentoren, the Oranjemolen and the MuZEEum. According to CBS (Statistics Netherlands), two thirds of the homes there are multi-family dwellings. Around the town centre lie residential neighbourhoods such as Paauwenburg, Bossenburgh, Westerzicht and Lammerenburg, where mostly single-family houses stand.
To the east lie Oost-Souburg and West-Souburg, with their own village centre and Vlissingen Souburg station, as well as the village of Ritthem; beyond them begins the port and industrial area of Vlissingen-Oost. From the centre, a foot and bicycle ferry crosses the Western Scheldt to Breskens. Further destinations with their own page can be found on our locations page.
Work, study and everyday life in Vlissingen
We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source for them; compare listings and offers from the housing associations. Important employers are the port North Sea Port, with the Vlissingen-Oost area, the shipyard Damen Naval in Vlissingen, the ADRZ hospital and the HZ University of Applied Sciences, whose main campus is in Vlissingen.
For everyday life, the beach and boulevard count, as do the proximity to Middelburg and the railway line via Middelburg and Goes towards Roosendaal and the Randstad. You can reach Belgium and Antwerp by car via the Westerschelde Tunnel or by ferry to Breskens. In this way a move to Vlissingen combines coastal living with short distances within the region.

From Berlin to the Western Scheldt – and throughout Germany
A long-haul move to Zeeland needs good planning. We are based in Berlin and operate throughout Germany and abroad. More on this under long-distance moves and in our locations overview.
Process: registering in Vlissingen from Germany
According to the Gemeente Vlissingen, anyone wishing to live in the Netherlands for longer than four months must register in person within five days of arrival. Partners and children who are to be registered come along. For registration from abroad, the municipality names the appointment route via the number 14 0118. The Rijksoverheid (Dutch central government) confirms the five-day deadline; anyone staying less than four months can register as a non-resident. After entry in the population register (BRP) you receive your citizen service number (BSN).
The counter at the town hall (Paul Krugerstraat 1) works by appointment only: Monday to Wednesday 8.30 am to 5.00 pm, Thursday 8.30 am to 8.00 pm, Friday 8.30 am to 12.00 noon. According to the municipality, you should bring:
- ID for each person to be registered,
- a signed tenancy or purchase agreement, or a signed declaration of consent from the main occupant or owner together with their ID,
- originals of foreign certificates, such as the birth certificate, not more than one year old.
Certificates issued in neither Dutch nor English must be translated by a sworn translator. The municipality does not state any costs on this page. For planning the journey and the costs, also read Moving to the Netherlands: costs and planning.
Vlissingen's Binnenstad: parking, types of housing and bulky waste
According to the municipality, paid parking in Vlissingen costs 2.30 euros per hour everywhere, up to a maximum of 11.50 euros per day, mostly between 9 am and 9 pm (in some places 9 am to 7 pm), including Sundays and public holidays. Outside the paid parking spaces, the wider Binnenstad is a residents' zone around the clock, and you may not park there without a permit. The De Fonteyne and Scheldeplein car parks are open around the clock every day.
For lorries: according to the general local bylaw (APV, Art. 1:11), vehicles over 6 metres long including their load may only park at designated places in built-up areas. The ban does not apply Monday to Friday between 8 am and 6 pm. For exemptions and parking for your move, you can reach the municipality on 14 0118 or at [email protected].
According to the key figures (Kerncijfers) of the statistics office CBS (2024), the Binnenstad has 8,470 inhabitants and 5,585 homes; 67 per cent of them are multi-family dwellings. In Lammerenburg, by contrast, 91 per cent of the homes are single-family houses.
The municipality only collects bulky waste for a fee (appointments via 14 0118). In 2026 one cubic metre costs 50.39 euros, and a maximum of 2 m³ is permitted per collection. Alternatively, take it to the Milieustraat (Poortersweg 30); from 1 November 2025 the Zeeuwse Afvalpas is required for this. Everything about the town can be found in the Living in Vlissingen guide.
