Guide for newcomers
Assen: A Quiet Provincial Capital in the North of the Netherlands
The first few weeks
For many families and commuters, a move to Assen means switching to a green, manageable provincial capital: Assen is the seat of the province of Drenthe and has around 71,000 inhabitants (early 2026). The city lies on the Zwolle–Groningen railway line and on the A28. We set off from Berlin-Moabit and plan every home removal individually, from packing your household goods to delivery in the Centrum, in Marsdijk or in Kloosterveen. That leaves time for registration, health insurance and getting to know Drenthe.
We give you the fixed price for your move to Assen after a survey; for your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available. Whether it is an older building in the Centrum or a terraced house in Marsdijk and Kloosterveen – we clarify carrying distances and access in advance. Beyond our home removal services, we coordinate furniture assembly, kitchen dismantling and interim storage on request. For customers from all over Germany we organise long-distance moves to the Netherlands; there are no customs formalities within the EU.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Assen
Assen's Neighbourhoods at a Glance
Assen has ten wijken (districts). The Centrum is the oldest part, with shops and buildings from many eras; Assen-Oost, along the old stone causeway, is considered a preferred residential area. Noorderpark, from the 1960s and 1970s, is characterised by rented flats and apartments, while Pittelo, with lots of green space, is considered child-friendly.
Marsdijk was built from 1986 and is now the most populous district, with many terraced houses. Kloosterveen, west of the city centre, is the youngest district; around 5,500 homes have been built there since the mid-1990s. Then there are Lariks, Assen-West, Peelo and the Buitengebied (rural area) – there is a suitable location for every lifestyle.
Housing market, employers and quality of life
We do not quote specific rents, because we have no reliable current source; figures on the housing mix and tax values per wijk can be found further down in the CBS section. As the seat of the province of Drenthe, Assen has many jobs in administration and the judiciary, plus healthcare and retail. The city is known for the Dutch TT at the TT Circuit Assen.
For students and commuters, the university city of Groningen lies on the same railway line, which makes Assen a quieter alternative. The city sits on a ridge of drift sand in the north of Drenthe, surrounded by woodland, heath and cycle paths; for culture there is the Drents Museum in the former provincial building. Many newcomers choose this mix deliberately.
Price overview: moving made easy
Your move starts at €369 for a 1-room flat and rises with size: €615 for 2 rooms, €905 for 3 rooms, €1,299 for 4 rooms. For larger properties such as a house or villa we prepare an individual quote. For long distances we charge €4.25/km on long-distance moves. Book your free survey now.
What does my move really cost?
Several factors count for a realistic cost estimate: the volume of your household goods, the distance to be covered (from €4.25/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. Sometimes a parking restriction zone is also needed to keep the transport running smoothly. Furniture assembly and a shared load also affect the final price.

From Berlin to Assen – and Back
We set off from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive to the Netherlands – to Assen it is around 584 km via the northern route. The route and process are described in the guide to moving to Assen. More in the locations overview and under long-distance moves.
Registering in Assen: BRP Registration and Citizen Service Number
If you move from Germany to Assen and stay in the Netherlands for longer than four months, you must register as a resident in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP), according to the Rijksoverheid. The deadline is five days after arrival. Partners and children coming with you must accompany you to the municipal office. According to the RvIG (Rijksdienst voor Identiteitsgegevens), registration is handled by the municipality where you live, i.e. the municipality of Assen. The municipality sets the appointment and the list of documents; ideally clarify both before you arrive.
After registration you receive your citizen service number (BSN). According to the RvIG, everyone who registers in the BRP for the first time receives a BSN. It is your personal number for dealings with the authorities. Employers need it for the tax administration and the pension fund, and it is asked for in healthcare, for example at the GP or in hospital.
There are exceptions. If you stay less than four months, you can register as a non-resident (Registratie Niet-Ingezetenen) and then also receive a BSN. If you are still waiting for a residence permit, according to the Rijksoverheid you do not have to register within five days. How to organise your move to Assen is explained in the moving guide for Assen.
Assen by Wijk: Housing Types, Households and Tax Values

The municipality is divided into ten wijken: Centrum, Lariks, Noorderpark, Assen-Oost, Pittelo, Assen-West, Peelo, Marsdijk, Kloosterveen and Buitengebied.
The picture varies greatly. In the Centrum (7,165 inhabitants), 72 per cent of homes are flats, and the average household size is 1.6 people.
