Moving to Assen: Costs Process & Districts

Assen guide
Moving to Assen: nine districts around the centre
Neighbourhoods, costs, access
A move to Assen takes you to the capital of the province of Drenthe, a town of around 71,000 inhabitants on the A28 between Groningen and Zwolle. We come from Berlin-Moabit, have no branch in the Netherlands and take care of transport, packing and furniture assembly. No customs duties apply within the EU. You can find our private move services under Private move; we quote the fixed price after a survey.
From Berlin-Moabit it is around 584 km via Bremen and Leer to the border at Nieuweschans, roughly 8.5 hours by lorry including a break. Whether Kloosterveen, Marsdijk or Centrum: before the moving date we clarify the stairwell, parking and – in the centre – delivery times and the zero-emission zone. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. The places we serve are shown in the overview of Locations. We quote the fixed price in writing.

Little to move? Part load!
For one room, single items of furniture or boxes that follow after you move in, a shared load to Assen can be cheaper. Your goods travel with other consignments towards the Netherlands; in return you need flexibility on the delivery day. The price drops accordingly.

All
about moving in to Assen
Besides the transport, a move to Assen raises practical questions: is the new address in the zero-emission zone? Does the lorry need a day permit for the pedestrian zone? Where may it stand overnight? And what is involved in re-registration? The municipality's rules are set out below; the route and driving time are described in the article Long-distance move to Assen.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Assen
Assen's districts at a glance
Assen is divided into the districts of Centrum, Assen-Oost, Assen-West, Noorderpark, Pittelo, Peelo, Marsdijk, Kloosterveen and Lariks, plus the Buitengebied (rural area). The Centrum is home to the Drents Museum in the former provincial hall, the Markt and the pedestrian zone – with short distances, but delivery times for the removal van.
In the residential districts around the centre, terraced and detached houses predominate; Kloosterveen in the west on the A28 has been built as a new district since 1997, with wider streets and parking close to the houses. Which part suits you usually depends on your commute, schools and house size; take a look at the street before you sign.
Living and settling in in Assen
We do not quote specific rents because they change quickly; Dutch portals show current listings. For registration with the Gemeente you need proof of residence, so your tenancy agreement should be in place before the moving date. When viewing, check whether the kitchen and floor covering stay in the flat.
As the Dutch rental market often demands quick decisions, coordinate the moving date and transport with us early. That way you can move into flats offered at short notice without time pressure; until the handover we store your household goods in Berlin if needed. We then schedule your private move to match the handover date.

Moves from Berlin – across the border too
We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), for single items of furniture as well as whole households. Places with their own pages are shown in the locations overview, long routes on the Long-distance moves page.
Assen: zero-emission zone and pedestrian area in the centre
According to the municipality, Assen's town centre is a zero-emission zone that coincides with the pedestrian area. It includes the Kerkstraat, the Markt, the Weierspoort, Mercurius, the Ceresplein, the Oude Molenstraat, the Oudestraat, the Gedempte Singel and the Mulderstraat. For a move there, the vehicle is decisive, not just the date:
- Vans and lorries newly registered in 2025 must be zero-emission to enter the pedestrian area.
- For vans up to 3,500 kg: emission class 4 or lower without an exemption has no access, class 5 may enter until 1.1.2027, and class 6 first registered up to 1.1.2025 until 1.1.2029.
- Nationwide transitional rules apply to lorries and other existing vehicles; cameras check automatically using number plate recognition, and breaches may result in a fine.
Whether a particular vehicle may enter is shown by the number plate check that the municipality links to. The municipality's map also shows loading and unloading bays located just outside the area.
For entering the pedestrian area itself, the municipality offers exemption permits. According to its website, a day permit (one calendar day, 24 hours) costs €19.00 (2026 rate), a weekly or monthly permit €56.00 and an annual permit €84.00. You apply via the municipality's online form. The municipality confirms whether it is sufficient for your removal van, and questions about camera enforcement go to [email protected]. We plan the Berlin side with a parking restriction zone.
Assen: re-registration, lorry parking and customs for the move
According to the municipality, anyone moving to or within the municipality of Assen must report the move no later than 5 days afterwards, digitally via the municipality's website. For moves from abroad, the municipality refers to separate pages, for example on registering for study or work and on re-registration. Check there in advance which documents you need to bring. Everyday life and the districts are described in our guide Living in Assen.
If the removal lorry stays overnight or over the weekend, observe the parking rules for large vehicles:
- According to the municipality, parking lorries and other large vehicles on the street is prohibited from Monday to Friday between 18.00 and 8.00 and at weekends.
- An exemption permit may be considered if the vehicle is longer than 6 metres and/or higher than 2.4 metres.
- In the application you state your name and address, vehicle details, location, date, time and the reason.
- Permitted parking spaces for lorries are shown on the municipality's map under the tab "Parkeren vrachtauto's".
On customs: according to German customs, you can bring goods duty-free from any EU country if they are intended for your personal use or consumption; cash of €10,000 or more must be declared if you are asked. The customs special rules for removal goods concern moves from non-EU countries, not from EU states. Read more about the process in the guide Moving to the Netherlands: customs, formalities and process.
