Klagenfurt for New Residents
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee: Lend Canal, Dragon and Lakeshore
Settling in, not just moving
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the state capital of Carinthia and, with almost 106,000 inhabitants, the sixth-largest city in Austria. The city lies in the Klagenfurt basin; the 16th-century Lend Canal connects the centre with Lake Wörthersee. Its landmark is the Dragon Fountain (Lindwurmbrunnen) on the Neuer Platz. If you come from Germany, you do not need customs papers, but you must register within three days using the registration form (Meldezettel).
We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Carinthia. From Berlin it is around 934 km via the A9, A99, A8, the Tauern motorway A10 and the Southern motorway A2; with rest breaks for driving-time rules we plan two days. More on this on our page Moving Berlin – Klagenfurt. There are no customs formalities within the EU; we also handle the opposite direction, Klagenfurt → Berlin. By lorry we expect about 14 hours including breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Klagenfurt
15 Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt is divided into 15 city districts and consists of 25 cadastral municipalities. Until 1848 the city comprised only today's Innere Stadt; in 1850 the four suburbs – St. Veiter, Völkermarkter, Viktringer and Villacher Vorstadt – were added, followed by further municipalities in 1938 and 1973. The Innere Stadt has four districts, and the others form a ring around it.
The outer districts include Viktring, St. Peter, Annabichl with the airport and Hörtendorf in the east. The campus of the Alpen-Adria-Universität is in St. Martin, near the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee and the Europapark. In the centre, short-stay parking zones apply with resident parking by zone. Where you live determines your bus line and carrying distance on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.

Registering in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee: Registration Form and Registration Office
The Austrian three-day deadline also applies in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee: according to the city, changes of residence must be registered at the new address within three days. If someone registers a main residence, their previous main residence is automatically deregistered at the same time. The registration form (Meldezettel) is available at the registration office (Kumpfgasse 20) and at the citizens' service in the town hall (Neuer Platz 1), or to print out on the city's website – please include the reverse side. For a main tenancy or sublet, the landlord must sign.
A new registration requires the completed registration form and official documents showing first name and surname, date and place of birth and nationality, such as a passport and birth certificate. Foreign nationals generally need their travel document. You can hand in the registration form in person, by courier with originals or certified copies, by post with certified copies, or online with a mobile signature or citizen card via oesterreich.gv.at. You can reach the registration office (Department of Population Affairs, Electoral and Registration Office) on +43 463 537-4030 or at [email protected]. Public opening hours are Monday to Thursday 8:00–15:00 and Friday 8:00–12:00; the city does not mention appointments.
Good to know: a confirmation of registration is often unnecessary because authorities can query the Central Register of Residents themselves. For EU, EEA and Swiss nationals staying longer than three months: the documentation must be applied for from the municipal authority by the fourth month at the latest. You can read more about costs and districts in the moving guide for Klagenfurt.
Living in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee: Resident Parking and Klagenfurt Wohnen
If you live in the centre of Klagenfurt, you will be familiar with short-stay parking zones. According to the city, you can get the resident parking card if your main residence is in an area-wide short-stay parking zone (a secondary residence is not enough) and you are the registered keeper of the vehicle. One card is issued per person and vehicle; a company car can count if the employer confirms private use in writing. You belong to the zone of your main residence (A, B, C, D, N, S, O, W or Z) and may park there without time limit, but only there. You need the registration form, the vehicle registration certificate and the tenancy agreement or proof of ownership; the city does not accept verbal tenancy agreements.
You can apply online via the e-form on amtsweg.gv.at or in writing at the Domplatz office building, Paulitschgasse 13, 4th floor. According to the city, the flat fee is 150 euros for one year or 300 euros for two years, plus processing fees. The card only takes effect once the official decision has been delivered.
Klagenfurt Wohnen is responsible for municipal flats: Paulitschgasse 13, telephone +43 463 537 3234 or 3359, [email protected]. The city treats municipal flats and cooperative flats as separate topics. Practical planning for the move is offered by our home removal service; for longer distances, read the long-distance moving guide.
