Long-distance move Berlin – Klagenfurt: route process & deadlines

From Berlin to Klagenfurt
Long-distance move to Klagenfurt: 934 km via the Tauern motorway
Guide
A move to Klagenfurt is one of our longest long-distance moves: around 934 km from Berlin via the A9 to Munich, the A8 to Salzburg, then 181 km on the Tauern motorway A10 and the last stretch on the Southern motorway A2. By lorry that is about 14 hours including breaks – considerably more than the daily driving time, so we plan two days. No customs duty is due on household goods within the EU; what matters are tolls, driving bans and the short registration deadline. For your long-distance move we clarify all this in advance.
We start in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), load on the first day and deliver to Klagenfurt on a working day. On Austrian motorways, vehicles over 3.5 t pay the distance-based GO toll, and night-time and weekend driving bans apply to heavy lorries. We quote the fixed price after a survey; we also handle the return route from Klagenfurt to Berlin. The route is described in Moving Berlin – Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.

What we take care of when you move to Klagenfurt
Planning in Berlin, arrival in Klagenfurt
We do not have a branch in Klagenfurt but come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a flat inside the Ring or a house near the Ostbucht. According to the City of Klagenfurt, a fee-paying short-stay parking zone applies inside and along the Ring – we clarify a parking space for the loading time with the city administration (Magistrat) in advance. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of the flat.

Move affordably with a part load
For smaller volumes or single items, a part load (Beiladung) to Klagenfurt can be cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments on the same route heading south. In return you need a little flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few items are following on.

Everything
for your move
A long-distance move to Klagenfurt is about more than transport: how long is the lorry on the road, do you need customs papers, how quickly must the registration form (Meldezettel) be submitted, and what happens to the car? This guide summarises the route, tolls and deadlines and sets out what the City of Klagenfurt says about the short-stay parking zone and bulky waste. An overview of all official procedures can be found in our checklist for Austria.

Common questions
No customs, but three deadlines
Like Germany, Austria is part of the European Union. When moving to Klagenfurt there is therefore no customs declaration and no import duties on your household goods; an inventory list still helps – for yourself and for liability purposes.
There are three deadlines you should know: you submit the Meldezettel (registration form) within three days of moving in, signed by your landlord or accommodation provider. For a stay of more than three months, as an EU citizen you apply for documentation of your right of residence by the fourth month at the latest. And in Germany you deregister within two weeks of moving out (§ 17 (2) BMG).
Two days on the road: route and driving time
From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 934 km to Klagenfurt: the A9 to Munich, the A99 and A8 to Salzburg, 181 km on the Tauern motorway A10 and around 31 km on the Southern motorway A2. For the lorry we allow about 14 hours including breaks. Because that is well beyond a driver's daily driving time, we load on the first day and deliver on the second. We do not quote flat average prices – you receive the fixed price after the survey.
In Austria, the GO toll applies to vehicles over 3.5 t; night-time and weekend driving bans apply to heavy lorries, so we deliver on a working day. In Klagenfurt itself, the city centre inside the Ring is a fee-paying short-stay parking zone – we clarify the parking space in advance.
How our moving prices work
Whether a 1-room flat from €365 or a 4-room flat from €1,269 – our prices are based on the actual effort involved. 2-room flats from €589 and 3-room flats from €879 are also fairly calculated. For houses and villas there is an individual quote, and we charge long-distance moves from €4.25/km. Arrange your free survey today.
What affects the moving price?
The price of a move depends above all on the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged from €4.25/km. The floor and whether there is a lift also play a role, as does any parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) required. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load also affect the total cost.

Klagenfurt am Wörthersee: short-stay parking zone, residents' permit and Ostbucht
According to the City of Klagenfurt, the fee-paying short-stay parking zone lies inside and along the Ring and covers around 3,800 parking spaces. Charges apply Monday to Friday 8 am–6 pm and Saturday 8 am–12 noon. Parking costs 90 cents per 30 minutes, and a daily rate of 7 euros applies in the parking streets; the maximum parking time is 3 hours. You should plan for this on moving day if your flat is in the city centre.
If you live permanently in a zone, you can apply for the residents' permit (Anrainerkarte):
- The requirement is your main residence in the zone, and the vehicle must be registered to the applicant.
- You need the Meldezettel, the vehicle registration certificate and proof of tenancy or ownership.
- The permit costs 150 euros for one year or 300 euros for two years and is only valid in your own zone.
A separate rule applies near the lake: the Ostbucht parking zone costs 50 cents per 30 minutes or 4 euros for the whole day, daily 8 am–8 pm from 1 April to 31 October and daily 8 am–5 pm from 1 November to 31 March.
The city's parking page does not cover parking restrictions or rules for removals. For this, you can reach the city administration (Magistrat) on +43 463 537-0. How the procedure works in Germany is shown in our guide to the parking restriction zone. More about the city: Moving to Klagenfurt: costs and districts.
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee: bulky waste, recycling centres and residence
The City of Klagenfurt offers two options for bulky waste. Collection takes place by appointment on +43 463 537-3344 or -3345 (Monday to Thursday 7 am–12 noon and 1–4 pm, Friday 7 am–12 noon). It costs 240 euros per order and load, or 124 euros with the city card, in each case including 10% VAT. Alternatively, you take the bulky waste yourself to the North recycling centre (Kautscheleweg 14) or the South one (Stadlweg 48):
- Bulky waste costs 6 euros per m³ or part thereof; only cash payment is possible.
- Opening hours are Monday to Friday 6 am–7 pm and Saturday 7 am–12 noon.
- Anyone not registered in Klagenfurt pays an additional 17 euros, according to the city.
The city also warns against handing waste to unauthorised collectors. Information is available from the waste disposal department on +43 463 537-3419.
For EU citizens staying in Klagenfurt for more than three months, a further deadline applies: according to the city, the application for documentation of the right of residence must be made by the fourth month at the latest. The NAG office at Kumpfgasse 20 is responsible; the appointment must be booked in advance ([email protected]). Allow for your passport, birth certificate, photograph and proof of accommodation, health insurance and means of subsistence. For settling in: Living in Klagenfurt.
