Liability on a long-distance move
Long-distance moves and insurance: what the HGB covers
Understanding liability
On a long-distance move, your furniture is on the road for hours, carried through narrow stairwells and shaken about in the lorry. The removal company is liable for damage under the German Commercial Code – but not without limit: statutory liability is €620 per cubic metre of cargo space your move requires (§ 451e HGB). What is reimbursed is the value of the items at the time they were taken over, not the price of a new one. Moving insurance that replaces everything at its new value only exists if it has been expressly agreed.
The process begins with a free survey in which we record the volume, the distance and particularly valuable items. Together with the fixed-price quote you also receive information about our liability – we are required to provide this by law (§ 451g HGB). If the statutory limit is not enough for you, we can discuss additional insurance on request. You can find further details about our services under Private move.

How we prevent and settle damage
Prevention instead of promises
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and carry out long-distance moves throughout Germany. The best protection is that nothing happens at all: furniture is padded, boxes are packed sturdily and secured in the lorry against slipping. If something does happen, liability under the HGB applies; we raise particularly valuable items in advance so that you can decide whether additional insurance is needed. What counts in case of damage
Insurance is no substitute for care, and care is no substitute for clear rules. That is why, before your long-distance move, we tell you what we are liable for and what you should cover yourself.
Reliable moving service
Safe handling
Clear communication
Structured move planning
Flexible support
Meet the deadlines
Shared loads and liability
Liability under the HGB also applies to a shared load: what counts is the cargo space your belongings take up. Since your furniture travels together with other consignments, we label it clearly and secure it separately. For individual valuable items, additional insurance can make sense here too.

Your
move – fully organised
On a long-distance move, insurance and planning are closely linked: anyone who draws up an inventory list with photos early on, sets valuables aside and informs their home contents insurer about the move is in a better position if damage occurs. Legal dates such as the notice period and registration at your new place of residence also belong in the plan. Our team advises you on packing, process and liability; for straightforward home moves you can find more under Private move.

Questions about liability and insurance
How statutory liability is calculated
Moves have their own chapter in the HGB. Under it, the removal company is liable for loss and damage up to €620 per cubic metre of the cargo space needed for your move (§ 451e HGB). If your household goods take up 30 m³, for example, the upper limit is €18,600 – for all damage combined. What is reimbursed is the value at the place and time of takeover, i.e. the current value, not the price of a new item (§ 429 HGB).
For consumers, this liability may not be reduced by contract (§ 451h HGB). The removal company must inform you about it when the contract is concluded and point out the option of more extensive liability or insurance (§ 451g HGB).
What liability does not cover
The law lists cases in which the removal company is not liable (§ 451d HGB): among others, precious metals, jewellery, money, securities and deeds, damage caused by defective packing by the customer themselves, live animals and plants, and items that are particularly fragile by nature.
So take valuables with you yourself. For expensive furniture, art or electronics, additional insurance can make sense on request; also ask your home contents insurer whether and how it covers transport during a move.
What does the moving service cost me?
In a nutshell: 1-room flats cost from €365, 2-room flats from €599, 3-room flats from €894 and 4-room flats from €1,344. For a house or villa you always receive an individual quote, tailored to your specific situation. For a long-distance move the price is from €3.80 per kilometre. It is best to get non-binding advice as part of a free survey.
How is the price of your move calculated?
First we determine the volume of your belongings, then the distance, which we charge from €3.80/km. The floor and lift also go into the calculation, as does any parking restriction zone required. We are happy to add furniture assembly or a shared load to your move.
