Moving to Bellinzona: Ticino's capital with three UNESCO castles
Neighbourhoods & costs
Bellinzona is the capital of the canton of Ticino and is known for its three castles, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The city lies where the A2 motorway from the Gotthard and the A13 from the San Bernardino meet. Anyone moving here from Germany should be prepared for Italian as the official language. Since the 2017 merger with twelve neighbouring municipalities, Bellinzona has around 45,000 inhabitants and 13 districts – from the Centro storico to the villages in the side valleys.
We are Beste Umzug Unternehmen from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and plan your move to Bellinzona according to the city's rules – from the narrow lanes of the Centro storico to new builds in the outer districts. For moving day, the Polizia comunale (municipal police) reserves signage; we clarify what that costs in advance. More on our services under private move, and the route and customs from Berlin under long-distance moves. We give you the price as a fixed price after the survey.

How we plan your move to Bellinzona
Planning according to the city's rules
We come from Berlin-Moabit and have no branch in Ticino. During the survey we clarify which district your new flat is in – the Centro storico with its narrow access roads or quieter areas such as Daro and Ravecchia – where the lorry can stand and whether signage is needed. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. We set out the process of a long-distance move with customs and the Alpine route in the quote, and give you the price as a fixed price after the survey.

What to prepare in Bellinzona
The flat search in Bellinzona usually runs via property portals and property managers. Rents are generally lower than in Lugano or Zurich; the exact level depends on the district and fittings.
Register early
Reserve signage
Centro storico
Use the Ecocentro
Allow for Italian
Keep customs in mind
Save with a part load
For smaller loads or individual pieces of furniture to Bellinzona, a shared load can be cheaper, because several consignments share the loading space. Delivery takes place within a time window rather than on a fixed date; you still need your own inventory list for customs.

Your
move, our craft
A move to Bellinzona brings a few organisational particularities: the dense buildings in the Centro storico often make signage for the removal van necessary, which the Polizia comunale reserves. You register at the Controllo abitanti after moving in; forms and the city's web pages are in Italian. If you submit documents in other languages, it is best to ask beforehand whether a translation is required. We set out the process of your private move during the survey.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Bellinzona
Bellinzona's districts at a glance
The historic centre around Piazza Governo and Piazza Collegiata lies below Castelgrande, with narrow lanes and short distances to shops and restaurants – but little parking space. Since 1907 Daro, Ravecchia and Carasso have also belonged to the Bellinzona district; with a good 20,000 inhabitants it is the largest in the city.
Since the 2017 merger, twelve former municipalities have been districts of the city, including Giubiasco, Camorino, Monte Carasso, Sementina and Claro. There is more space there and many new builds; families value the proximity to schools and green spaces, and commuters the rail connections towards Lugano and Locarno.
Employers, education and everyday life in Bellinzona
As the cantonal capital, Bellinzona is home to the cantonal administration of Ticino, along with the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC) with the San Giovanni regional hospital. Rail and logistics are also important because of its location on the Gotthard axis. The USI and SUPSI universities are mainly located in the Lugano area; Bellinzona itself has a grammar school and vocational schools.
In everyday life the city is shaped by the mild climate, weekly markets in the old town and short distances to lakes and mountains. Many people move here because Bellinzona is quieter than Lugano and yet, thanks to the Ceneri Base Tunnel, close to the larger job market.
Price overview: moving made easy
Your move starts at €359 for a 1-room flat and rises with size: €594 for 2 rooms, €894 for 3 rooms, €1,329 for 4 rooms. For larger properties such as a house or villa we prepare an individual quote. We charge long distances at €3.95/km for long-distance moves. Secure your free survey now.
These criteria determine your moving price
First, the volume of your household goods counts, then the distance between the old and new location (from €3.95/km). The floor and a missing lift also have an effect, as does a necessary parking restriction zone. Furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked as options.

Customs and entry when moving to Bellinzona: form 18.44 and the pre-check
Bellinzona is in Switzerland, so your belongings are cleared by customs on entry. According to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG), the most important condition for the duty-free import of household goods is the transfer of your residence to Switzerland. You must also have used the items personally for at least 6 months and continue to use them after import.
On entry you present form 18.44 ("Customs assessment of removal goods") to the customs office. You prove the change of residence, for example, with the deregistration in your country of origin and an employment contract or tenancy agreement; the customs office decides whether the documents are sufficient. If papers are missing, according to the BAZG a provisional customs treatment against a deposit is possible, and you then submit the documents within 6 months.
The BAZG offers an optional pre-check: the dossier must be submitted at least 2 working days before crossing the border, and you must cross the border at the customs office that processed it. The options are Mendrisiotto (Stabio-Confine), Vedeggio and Chiasso-Strada. Clearance takes place Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 17:00. Declare later shipments on a separate list at the first import.
More on the process can be found in our article Moving to Switzerland: customs formalities and process. The BAZG information centre can be reached on +41 58 467 15 15.
Bellinzona after moving in: the Sportello on Piazza Nosetto and the Ecocentro
Bellinzona consists of several districts. According to the city administration, the Bellinzona district, with 20,231 inhabitants at the end of 2025, is the most populous; in 2017, 12 former municipalities joined. The counter (Sportello multifunzionale) in the Bellinzona district is in the Palazzo Civico on Piazza Nosetto and, according to the city, handles "tutte le pratiche legate al controllo abitanti", i.e. all matters relating to residents' registration, as well as certificates. It is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 08.30 to 12.00 and from 13.30 to 16.30, and on Thursday from 07.30 to 17.30. Contact: tel. 058 203 10 01, [email protected].
We did not find separate instructions for reserved moving parking spaces on bellinzona.ch. Ask the municipal chancellery (tel. 058 203 10 00) early on how you can get space for the lorry in front of the house.
For waste disposal, the city lists 9 Ecocentri and 52 Ecopunti. The Ecocentro Bellinzona (Carasso, via Riale Righetti) is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 08.00 to 11.30 and 13.30 to 16.45. Access is with the Bellinzona360 card or the invoice for the basic fee. Bulky waste is accepted up to 300 kg or 5 m³; according to the city, delivery by tradespeople and businesses in the sector is not permitted. Queries are answered by the Settore Servizi urbani e ambiente (urban services and environment department, tel. 058 203 16 40). Everything about everyday life on site can be found in the guide to living in Bellinzona; the route from Berlin is described in our long-distance moving guide.
