Arlon guide
Arlon: Roman roots, a commuter town next to Luxembourg
Districts, registration, parking
Arlon is the capital of the Belgian province of Luxembourg and, in competition with Tongeren and Tournai, claims to be the oldest town in Belgium: the Roman settlement of Orolaunum dates back to around 52 BC. The town lies close to the border with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and many residents commute there for work. The old town with the Archaeological Museum and its important Gallo-Roman collection, and the 17th-century church of Saint-Donat, shape the centre; a replica of a Jupiter column stands in the pedestrian zone. If you are planning a move to Arlon, start your flat search early, because the proximity to Luxembourg makes the town popular with commuters.
Besides the town itself, the municipality includes the villages of Autelbas, Bonnert, Fouches, Guirsch, Heinsch and Toernich, with a rather rural character, detached houses and short distances to the border. The centre, by contrast, offers shops, schools and the station with connections to Luxembourg. You can best check current rents on up-to-date property portals – we do not quote fixed averages. For your private move to Arlon we plan the route, stopping place and carrying routes in the narrow old-town lanes in advance and quote a fixed price after the survey.

Districts,
town hall, border
Many factors play a role in a move to Arlon: registration at the town hall with the Service Population or – when moving in from abroad – the Service des Étrangers, the choice between the town and its villages, and the commute to work in Luxembourg or in Arlon itself, for example at the University of Liège (ULiège) campus. Schools, childcare, doctors' surgeries and – if you bring a car – its later Belgian registration also belong in the planning. The town's pages are in French. Our private moving service covers packing, transport and assembly.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Arlon
The town and villages of Arlon
The municipality of Arlon consists of the town itself and the villages merged into it in 1976. The centre with the old town, shops and restaurants offers short distances and a rail connection. Bonnert, Heinsch, Toernich, Guirsch, Autelbas and Fouches are quieter and more rural, with detached houses and more space.
If you work in Luxembourg, consider the route to the border and to the station. The choice depends on where you work and whether you prefer town or village – for the move, we clarify access, floor and stopping place at your address.
Working and living in Arlon
Many of Arlon's residents commute to work in Luxembourg, home to banks, EU institutions and international companies. Arlon itself is a provincial capital with administration, schools and a campus of the University of Liège (ULiège), as well as retail and trades.
The town combines an old town, Roman history and rural surroundings. For families and commuters, short distances, schools and the commute across the border count. If you work in Luxembourg, check rush-hour travel times and the rail connection before choosing a flat. The route from Berlin – around 796 km, finally through Luxembourg – is described in our long-distance moving guide for Arlon.

Arlon: parking in the centre and use of the street when moving
According to arlon.be, parking in the centre of Arlon is chargeable from 8:30 to 18:00. On weekdays the town offers one free hour: you start the parking session at the nearest meter with your number plate and split the hour into blocks of 15, 30 or 45 minutes. On Saturdays you get a free hour for every paid hour, so three hours cost €1. Anyone who does not display a parking ticket behind the windscreen pays, according to the town, a flat fee of €10 per half day. On its pages about car parks, the town also lists the Parking Léopold and the Parking Espace Didier.
We found no dedicated page on reserving parking spaces for moves. According to arlon.be, the Département technique is responsible for the use of public roads: it drafts police orders for the occupation of the public highway and lends Nadar crowd barriers and signs to private individuals. The page does not say whether a move is covered. Ask early on +32 63 24 56 00 or by email to [email protected].
On the German side, our page on the parking restriction zone helps you plan; the customs formalities are explained in Moving to Belgium: customs, formalities and process.
Arlon: registration at the Service Population and Service Étrangers
According to arlon.be, anyone settling in Arlon must report to the Service Population at the town hall (Rue Paul Reuter 8, 6700 Arlon). The declaration is made by the “personne de référence du ménage” (reference person of the household), i.e. the adult who usually handles the household's contact with the administration. For moves from abroad, the town requires a deregistration certificate from your previous municipality, a marriage or divorce extract if your marital status changed abroad, and birth extracts for children born abroad. If you live with someone else, you need a municipal form to be filled in by that person.
Registration is followed by a police residence check. According to the town it takes about three weeks; if it is favourable, you will be invited again to update your ID card. The Service Étrangers is responsible for registering foreign nationals arriving from abroad (+32 63 24 56 73, [email protected]). According to the town, the change of address can also be made via the online citizens' portal.
Opening hours: Monday and Tuesday 8:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, Wednesday to Friday 8:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00; afternoons by appointment only, Saturdays 10:00 to 12:00 by appointment only. The page does not give a deadline in days. The route from Berlin is described in our long-distance moving guide for Arlon.
