Moving to Brno (Brünn): Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Brno
Moving to Brno: Špilberk, Villa Tugendhat and Náměstí Svobody
Guide
Brno (German: Brünn), with over 396,000 residents, is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic after Prague and the administrative seat of the South Moravian Region. Špilberk Castle and the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul shape the skyline, and Mies van der Rohe's Villa Tugendhat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Brno has 13 universities, and major trade fairs take place at the exhibition grounds in Pisárky. If you are planning a move to Brno, you need no customs papers within the EU, but you do need an entry permit for the centre. From Berlin-Moabit it is around 558 km via Dresden and Prague.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 558 km via Dresden, Prague and the D1 to Brno; that takes about 8 hours including a break. As both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Brno or from Brno back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. Read more about paperwork in the article Moving to the Czech Republic.

Fixed price for your move to Brno – request a survey
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a survey for your move to Brno. We take into account the size of the flat, the floor, access, the roughly 558 km route and any shared-load requests, and then quote you a fixed price. Places with their own pages can be found under locations.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What we take on when you move to Brno
Planned in Berlin, arriving in South Moravia
We have no branch in Brno; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether an old building in Brno-střed, a flat in Královo Pole or a house in Žabovřesky. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address under the City of Brno's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

Little to move? Part load!
For smaller moving volumes or single items, a shared load to Brno can be cheaper: your belongings share the loading space with other consignments on the same route. You need some flexibility on the delivery day; we will tell you after your enquiry whether a run towards Brno is coming up. It is also handy if a few items need to follow after the main move.

From
planning to assembly
A move to Brno raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get an entry permit for the historic centre, when do you need a special-use permit for the street and where do you dispose of bulky waste? This guide introduces districts from Brno-střed and Královo Pole to Bystrc, explains access, special use, registration and collection yards, and describes the roughly 558 km drive from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Brno
Districts of Brno: where is it worth living?
Brno-Centre (Brno-střed) is the historic centre with Náměstí Svobody, Špilberk Castle and short distances to work and university; entering with the removal van requires a permit here. Královo Pole lies close to the Brno University of Technology (VUT), while Žabovřesky and Černá Pole, home to the Villa Tugendhat, are considered green residential areas.
In Bohunice, Líšeň or Vinohrady, larger prefabricated housing estates dominate. Bystrc lies on the Brno Reservoir, Kohoutovice on the edge of the city. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition. For the move, what counts is access, floor and lift.
Employers, universities and quality of life in Brno
Brno is an important centre for research and higher education: 13 universities, including Masaryk University and the Brno University of Technology (VUT), give the city a young, international feel. Jobs are offered by IT and technology firms, research, the trade fair and the administration of the South Moravian Region. Brno is also a UNESCO "City of Music".
Quality of life is considered high: short distances, green spaces such as Lužánky Park, a tram network and the reservoir in Bystrc. The D1 motorway connects Brno with Prague and Ostrava, the D2 with Slovakia; Vienna can be reached by rail and road. Many people also appreciate the lower cost of living compared with Germany.
How much does my move actually cost?
A fair question that we are happy to answer: 1-room flats cost from €365, 2-room flats from €589. If you live in a 3-room flat, you pay from €889, and for 4 rooms it is from €1,324. Houses and villas are always calculated individually. Important for anyone moving further: we charge long-distance moves from €4.20 per kilometre. Arrange a free survey today.
Understanding moving costs
Whether a large or small volume – the amount largely determines the price. Then there is the distance, charged from €4.20/km, as well as factors such as the floor, lift and parking restriction zone. For extra convenience we also offer furniture assembly and shared loads.

We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) for private and business customers. In the locations overview you will find places with their own pages, and details on longer routes under long-distance moves.
Access to the historic centre of Brno
The centre of Brno is not open territory for removal vehicles. According to the City of Brno, entering the historic centre requires a valid entry permit (vjezdové oprávnění). The only exception is the Veselá sub-area, which can be driven into freely. The categories include residents, subscribers, delivery traffic, service vehicles and taxis, among others. For the delivery traffic category, the city gives a time window of 6:00 to 10:30. The page does not cover whether a move falls under this category; we clarify that with the authority in advance.
The permits are issued by the entry permits department at Veveří 100, in the ACADEMY PARK car park. You can apply by setting up a personal user account, by email to [email protected], via the data box (datová schránka) or in person. The city does not mention any administrative fees. Office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 to 17:00 and Fridays from 8:00 to 12:00 (telephone +420 542 172 525).
If public space is used for the move, a permit for special use (zvláštní užívání) of the street may also be required. It is applied for at the transport department (Odbor dopravy, Kounicova 67). According to the city, it costs an administrative fee of CZK 100 for up to 10 days. The page does not say whether a move is explicitly covered, so we ask in advance.
Customs and paperwork for the Czech Republic are described in our article Moving to the Czech Republic: customs, formalities and process.
Parking spaces, bulky waste and collection yards in Brno
If you need space for the van outside the building, in Brno you will come across the "vyhrazené parkovací stání" (reserved parking space). According to the City of Brno, companies or residents can apply for one near their registered office or home. The permit is valid for one year, for a maximum of 2 spaces, and according to the city costs an administrative fee of CZK 500 for a period of up to 5 months. So it is hardly intended for a single moving day; that is why we plan stopping and loading areas individually with you.
Residents can also obtain resident parking permits. The traffic situation and road signs can be viewed on the city's transport portals, for example on the road-sign map and the doprava-brno.cz portal. For a special-use application, the City of Brno states that the documents must include a sketch of the affected area and the prior consent of the road operator BKOM a.s. Where traffic is affected, the city also requires a traffic management plan. This takes time, so set your moving date early and give us the address in good time.
Collection yards help when clearing out. According to SAKO, the company operates 35 collection yards (sběrné dvory) in Brno; a list for residents and a map are available online; telephone +420 800 139 139. According to SAKO, the local municipal waste fee is handled directly by the City of Brno.
The services we offer from Berlin are listed under parking restriction zone and in the article Moving to the Czech Republic: costs and planning.
