Moving to Vienna: costs process & districts

Vienna guide
Vienna: 23 districts, many types of housing
Districts, housing, public offices
A move to Vienna from Germany is a long-distance move within the EU – without a customs declaration, but with Austria's registration requirement and its own rules for parking restrictions. Vienna is divided into 23 municipal districts (Gemeindebezirke), and its housing market distinguishes between privately financed flats, cooperative flats and council housing (Gemeindebau). We take care of packing, transport and assembly; you can find routes from Berlin under Long-distance moves.
Whether a period building in Josefstadt, a flat in Neubau or a new development in Donaustadt – we plan your private move around the floor, access and loading time. We are based in Berlin and also move people abroad; the page Moving Berlin – Vienna describes the route via Prague. Your goods are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Call us on 01625978461.

What we clarify before moving day in Vienna
MA 46, loading time, registration form
Vienna is a city of contrasts: Gründerzeit buildings in Josefstadt, high-rises in Donaustadt. The removal van usually needs a short-term parking restriction zone from the MA 46, applied for at least ten working days in advance; the signs must be in place in good time. We clarify these points with you before moving day. With our private move service, planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source, and the price is fixed after the survey.

Vienna
for newcomers
A move to Vienna comes with Austrian particularities: registration with the Meldezettel must take place within three days of moving in, and the Vienna housing market distinguishes between privately financed flats, cooperative flats and council housing. If you are coming from Germany, also think about health insurance, car registration and a bank account. We advise you on the checklist and schedule around your moving date; read more about everyday life in the article Living in Vienna.

Frequently asked questions about living in Vienna
Vienna's districts: from the Innere Stadt to Liesing
Vienna is divided into 23 municipal districts, each with a very different character. The Innere Stadt (1st district) is the historic centre, with little housing and narrow lanes. Gründerzeit buildings characterise inner districts such as Neubau, Josefstadt or Mariahilf; there, stairwells are often narrow and lifts have been retrofitted or are missing altogether. Favoriten in the south is one of the most populous districts.
On the outskirts lie Döbling and Hietzing, close to the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald) and Schönbrunn. Beyond the Danube, Floridsdorf and Donaustadt are growing with many new buildings; the U-Bahn connects them with the centre. During the survey we clarify access, floor and loading route for your new address.
Working, studying and living in Vienna
Vienna is home to international organisations at the Vienna International Centre and to major Austrian companies. In addition there are universities such as the University of Vienna, TU Wien and the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). We deliberately do not quote reliable current rent figures here; they differ greatly by district and type of housing.
A dense network of U-Bahn, trams and buses run by Wiener Linien makes everyday life easy even without your own car. After moving in, plan for health insurance, registration and – if you are staying – car registration in Austria. Our team schedules your moving date to match the handover of the flat and the parking restriction zone.
Moving prices by flat size
From a small flat to a large villa – we have fair prices for every situation. One-room flats start from €359, two-room flats from €615. For 3 rooms we charge from €884, for 4 rooms from €1,279. Houses or villas always receive an individual quote, as a lot depends on the individual case. For long-distance moves a price per kilometre from €3.80 applies. Parking restrictions for your move in Vienna: MA 46, deadline and signs
If you need space for the removal van in Vienna, you apply, according to the City of Vienna, for a short-term parking restriction zone. The responsible office is the MA 46 (Traffic Organisation and Technical Traffic Affairs) at Niederhofstraße 21, 1120 Vienna, open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 3 pm. You can also apply online via mein.wien.gv.at.
This is what the city says about the deadline, costs and process:
- The application must be submitted at least 10 working days before the move.
- The permit applies for a maximum of one week (5 working days) and only during loading times, for example 7 am to 6 pm rather than all day.
- As costs, the city names a federal fee of 21 euros for the submission plus 6 euros per enclosure (maximum 36 euros) and an administrative charge of 60 euros. The costs may vary depending on the traffic measures required.
- You obtain the signs yourself, for example from a DIY store, or rent them from the MA 48. They must be in place at least 24 hours before the start, and only after you have received the decision.
- The police station confirms that they have been put up. After removing them, you send the supplementary sheet back to the MA 46.
- For zones longer than 15 metres, the city requires a detailed justification.
You can read how an application differs in Germany in Applying for a parking restriction zone. For planning from Berlin, see the guide Long-distance move to Austria.
Registration form, short-stay parking zone and GO toll: moving to Vienna in detail
After moving in, you must register in Vienna within three days. The City of Vienna states this in its moving tips, as does the federal government on oesterreich.gv.at. You can register via the digital "Meldewesen" (registration) service, in person or in writing with the registration authority. According to oesterreich.gv.at, anyone who misses the deadline can expect a fine. If you take contracts such as electricity or internet with you to the new address, a transfer is sufficient according to the City of Vienna; you do not have to cancel them.
Parking rules are also important for moving day. According to the City of Vienna, a city-wide short-stay parking zone applies throughout Vienna, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 10 pm, with a maximum parking time of two hours. Residents with a Parkpickerl (residents' parking permit) may park in their own district without a time limit. Some sparsely populated outlying areas of districts 14, 21, 22 and 23 are exempt. This does not replace a parking restriction, so we plan the zone in from the start.
On the route, the distance-based GO toll with a GO-Box applies to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on motorways and expressways. The MA 48 explains on wien.gv.at how to dispose of bulky waste properly after your move.
