New in Vienna: The First Weeks After Moving In

Arriving in Vienna
Vienna for Newcomers: 23 Districts, One Registration Form
First steps
If you move to Vienna, the first deadline starts on moving day: within three days, your registration form (Meldezettel) must be at the registration service, and you cannot register beforehand. After that come things that work differently from Germany – the parking permit (Parkpickerl) is tied to your main residence, a council flat is only available after two years of main residence in the city, and since January 2026 the Wiener Linien annual pass has cost €467 instead of €365. This guide collects what newcomers really need in the first weeks.
Many flats in districts such as Mariahilf or Neubau are in late-19th-century (Gründerzeit) buildings, often with a narrow staircase and no lift. So plan at the viewing how the wardrobe and sofa will get upstairs. We set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive your belongings to Vienna – around 684 km via the A13 and Prague; more on this under Moving Berlin–Vienna. This guide explains the paperwork, the parking permit and the recycling centre; we quote the fixed price for the transport after the survey.

Call us on 01625978461: after a survey, we give you a fixed price for your transport to Vienna. Whether it's a room in a flat share in Alsergrund or a family flat in Donaustadt – volume, floor, lift and access are what count. You can find the route from Berlin under Long-Distance Moves.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What Works Differently in Vienna
Registration Form, Parking Permit, Housing, Public Transport
Vienna is a city of contrasts – from the Ringstraße to the Seestadt Aspern in the 22nd district. For newcomers, though, four rules come first: registration form within three days, parking permit only at a main residence in a short-stay parking zone, the Wiener Wohn-Ticket only after two years of main residence, and an annual public transport pass instead of a car. We set off from Berlin and take care of transport; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available.

Six Things for the First Weeks
After moving into Vienna, there are more appointments than in Germany: registration form, parking permit, car, nursery, bulky waste. These six points help you keep the order – from the first day to the first full month in your new flat.
Days 1 to 3: Registration Form
Week 1: deregister in Berlin
Week 1: Parking Permit
Month 1: Car
Nursery
Bulky Waste to the Recycling Centre
Just One Room to Vienna?

Register,
settle, arrive
After moving into Vienna, it's not just about the registration form: a car with German number plates must be registered in Austria after you move your main residence, and registration takes place at the insurers' registration offices. On the Vienna housing market, good flats go quickly; if there is a gap between moving out and moving in, storage can help. And if you have children, you should know the registration periods for municipal nurseries.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Vienna
Vienna's Districts: Where Newcomers Look
Vienna is divided into 23 districts with very different characters. The Innere Stadt (1st district) is historic and expensive, while districts such as Favoriten (10th) or Simmering (11th) tend to offer housing for tighter budgets. Young creatives and students are often drawn to the 7th district, Neubau, with the MuseumsQuartier and many cafés, and families frequently to the green 19th district, Döbling, with its vineyards.
If you are looking for a newly built flat, take a look at the Seestadt Aspern in the 22nd district – one of the largest urban development areas in Europe, with a lake and the terminus of the U2. The Leopoldstadt (2nd district) between the Danube Canal and the Prater is also popular with newcomers. Which district you choose also determines the parking permit: it is only valid in the district of your main residence. We handle the transport there with our home removal service.
Housing Market, Employers and Studying in Vienna
The Vienna housing market is strongly shaped by municipal housing (Gemeindebau) and cooperative flats, which dampens the price level compared with other capitals. For newcomers, however: according to Wohnberatung Wien, the Wiener Wohn-Ticket required for a council flat requires two years of uninterrupted main residence in Vienna. At the start you therefore search on the private market, for example via willhaben or ImmoScout24, and should be able to decide quickly.
As a place to work, Vienna offers the headquarters of corporations such as OMV, Erste Group and Verbund, as well as the UN site Vienna International Centre in the 22nd district. Every year many people come to study at the University of Vienna, TU Wien and WU Vienna. If you are starting your studies, you will mainly find rooms in flat shares and halls of residence near the university – it pays to search before your moving date.
What Transport to Vienna Costs
So that you can plan your move in a relaxed way, here are the key figures: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €584, 3-room flat from €884, 4-room flat from €1,309. For a house or villa you receive an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €3.90/km. The first step is always a free survey.
What the Price of a Vienna Move Depends On
The decisive factors are the moving volume, the kilometres driven (from €3.90/km), floor and lift, and any parking restriction zone. Additional services such as furniture assembly and a shared load can be added flexibly.

From Berlin to Vienna and Beyond
We set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and also travel to Austria. The Berlin–Vienna route is described on the page Moving Berlin–Vienna; other destinations are in the locations overview and under Long-Distance Moves.
Vienna: Registration Form and Registering Within Three Days
If you move to Vienna, according to the City of Vienna you must register at the new address no later than three days after moving in; registering before moving in is not possible. Each person fills in their own registration form; for minors up to 18, the person with custody registers them. Landlords or property management do not register you; they sign as the accommodation provider. Registration is free of charge and possible at any registration service, regardless of district; addresses and opening hours are at wien.gv.at/wohnen/meldeservice-standorte-termine. Another person can also hand in the documents without a power of attorney.
You must bring, in the original or as a certified copy:
- the fully completed registration form,
- an ID document with surname and first name, date and place of birth, sex and citizenship, for example a passport and birth certificate,
- if you are not an Austrian citizen, always a travel document,
- if required, the tenancy or purchase agreement.
You book appointments via mein.wien.gv.at. Adults with ID Austria or EU Login can only register online if it is not their first registration in Austria; first registrations are therefore done at the counter or by post (registered letter), not by fax. According to oesterreich.gv.at, a registration confirmation is subject to a fee and is available via the Ministry of the Interior. Registration has consequences, for example for registering your car and the obligation to pay the ORF (public broadcaster) contribution.
Vienna's 23 Districts: Parking Permit, Recycling Centres and Daily Life
Vienna is divided into 23 districts, from the Innere Stadt (1st) to Liesing (23rd). For parking, your main residence is decisive: according to the City of Vienna, you only get a parking permit if your main residence is in a short-stay parking zone and the car is a multi-track vehicle weighing no more than 3.5 tonnes. There is only one parking permit per main residence. The municipal district office for your main residence is responsible; delivery of the decision can take about a week. According to the city, the parking meter levy is €13 per month and is the same in all districts.
You take bulky waste to one of the 13 recycling centres (Mistplätze). According to the city, they are open Monday to Saturday from 7 am to 6 pm (Ottakring and Heiligenstadt from 8 am on Saturdays); bulky waste, recyclables and hazardous waste in household quantities are free, and residual waste costs €2 for up to 150 litres. Private individuals may drop off up to 1 m³ once a day. The recycling centres no longer accept plasterboard. For flat clearances, the MA 48 offers a chargeable bulky waste collection directly from your flat, cellar or attic.
You can read more about neighbourhoods and costs in the Vienna moving guide; for the journey to Austria, the guide to long-distance moves to Austria will help. If you are moving to the surrounding area, you will find information on Wiener Neustadt.
