Moving to Vienna: parking restriction the drive via Prague and the registration form on schedule

Planning Berlin – Vienna
Moving to Vienna: three deadlines, one drive
Guide
A move to Vienna is a classic long-distance move to another EU country – without customs, but with three deadlines you should plan for early. You apply to the MA 46 for the parking restriction (Halteverbot) for moving day at least ten working days in advance. In Berlin you deregister no earlier than one week before and no later than two weeks after moving out. In Vienna you register at a registration service (Meldeservice) no later than three days after moving in, regardless of the district.
We are based in Berlin-Moabit and drive around 684 km: via the A13 and A17 into the Czech Republic, via Prague and Brno to the border at Drasenhofen and on to Vienna. By lorry, including breaks, we reckon on about 10.5 hours – so two drivers or an overnight stop. More about the route under Moving Berlin – Vienna. We give you the fixed price after the survey.

What we take care of when you move to Vienna
Transport from Berlin, coordinated dates
We have no branch in Austria; instead we drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit to Vienna. On request we take care of packing, dismantling, transport and assembly and plan the roughly 684 km with two drivers or an overnight stop. You apply for the parking restriction with the MA 46 and handle the registration form yourself; we align the unloading date with them. We are liable for your goods under § 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB) at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. You can find places with their own pages under Locations.

The schedule for your Vienna move
For a move abroad to Vienna, dates are what count above all: parking restriction, deregistration, the drive and the registration form. The six points show what is due when and who takes care of it.

Part load to Vienna
For individual pieces of furniture or a small household, a part load (Beiladung) to Vienna can be cheaper because your household goods travel together with other consignments. Instead of a fixed date, a delivery window applies – a parking restriction is then only worthwhile once the day is fixed.

From
the application to the registration form
A long-distance move to Vienna consists of three stages: applications and appointments before the move (parking restriction with the MA 46, deregistering in Berlin), the drive through the Czech Republic with tolls and driving times, and the first few days in Vienna with the registration form, short-stay parking zone and car. Our Vienna guide to districts and costs describes everyday life in the 23 districts; more on long routes under Long-distance moves.

Common questions
No customs, but a registration requirement: paperwork for Vienna
Austria is part of the European Union, so your household goods are not subject to customs when moving to Vienna. A numbered inventory list is still useful – to keep track when unloading and in case something is missing after transport. The registration authorities matter more: in Berlin you deregister because you are not moving into a new flat in Germany.
In Vienna you register no later than three days after moving in, with the registration form and your travel document. If you stay longer than three months as an EU citizen, you apply for the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) within four months. With your main residence in Austria, a car with German number plates may generally only be used for one month from the date it is brought in.
684 km via Prague: how the drive works
From Berlin-Moabit the route runs via the A13 towards Dresden and the A17 to the Czech border, then via Prague and the D1 motorway to Brno and on via Mikulov to the Austrian border at Drasenhofen. From there, the Nord Autobahn or the B7 leads to Vienna – around 684 km in total. In the Czech Republic and Austria, a distance-based toll is payable for vehicles over 3.5 t.
By lorry that is about 10.5 hours including breaks, more than one driver's nine hours of daily driving time. We therefore drive with two drivers or stay overnight on the way; with loading and unloading, we plan two days. We schedule the unloading day so that it falls within your approved parking restriction period.

These factors affect the price
How high the cost of your move turns out to be depends on the volume, the distance (from €3.85/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. If there is no parking directly in front of the door, we recommend a parking restriction zone. We are also happy to advise you on furniture assembly and a part load.

Vienna: applying to the MA 46 for a parking restriction for your move
In Vienna you apply for a parking restriction for a move to the MA 46 (Traffic Organisation and Technical Traffic Affairs, Niederhofstraße 21, 12th district). According to the City of Vienna, the "short-term parking restriction zone" (kurzfristige Halteverbotszone) is only intended for moves and similar loading activities.
- Application: in writing via the online form, by email ([email protected]) or in person at the customer centre, Monday to Friday 8 am to 3 pm.
- Lead time: at least ten working days before the move; an investigation procedure decides on approval. Signs may only be put up once you have the written decision.
- Duration: a maximum of one week or five working days, only for the actual loading times.
- Requirement: there must be a regular parking lane at the location. Zones longer than 15 metres need a justification.
- Costs: federal fee of 21 euros plus 6 euros per enclosure (maximum 36 euros) and an administrative charge of 60 euros; the final costs may differ depending on the traffic measures.
You obtain the traffic signs yourself (the MA 48 offers a rental service) and put them up at least 24 hours beforehand; the police confirm when they are put up and removed. Alternatively, according to the city, you can park a private car in the gap and drive it away when the lorry arrives. The Vienna guide offers background, and the article Moving to Austria covers customs.
Vienna: short-stay parking zone, registration within three days and route planning
The City of Vienna has short-stay parking zones (Kurzparkzonen) in which, according to the city, parking charges apply Monday to Friday from 9 am to 10 pm, with a maximum parking time of two hours via parking voucher or HANDYPARKEN; shopping streets have their own rules. The MA 48 tows away illegally parked vehicles (+43 1 760 43). For questions about roads and traffic, the infoline +43 1 955 59 is available daily from 7 am to 6 pm.
After moving in, the registration deadline applies: according to the City of Vienna, you must register no later than three days after moving in. Registration is not possible beforehand; signing the tenancy agreement or the key handover does not start the deadline. You need the registration form and ID (original or certified copy), and for non-Austrians a travel document. Registration is free of charge and possible at any registration service, regardless of the district.
On the route from Berlin, our drivers are bound by the EU driving-time rules, which according to Your Europe apply to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes: a maximum of 9 hours' driving a day, a break of at least 45 minutes after 4.5 hours, and at least 11 hours' rest. Depending on the unloading date, we therefore plan an overnight stop. We agree the time slot with you so that the parking restriction and unloading fit together.
