Long-distance move Berlin – Mechelen: Route Process & Schedule

From Berlin to Mechelen
Long-distance move to Mechelen – 747 km to between Brussels and Antwerp
Guide
A move to Mechelen takes you to the Flemish city on the Dijle between Brussels and Antwerp: around 89,000 people live here, and the almost circular city centre is barely a kilometre across. Because Belgium is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. More important are the permit for the removal van, the driving ban times in the centre and the address registration. What we take care of for private moves is listed under Private move.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 747 km via the A2, crossing into the Netherlands at Venlo and continuing via Eindhoven and Antwerp. By lorry that is about 11.5 hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so we plan two to three days with an overnight stop or two drivers. We quote the fixed price after the survey, also for the return trip to Berlin. Enquiries on 01625978461.

Move to Mechelen: survey first, then a fixed price
Volume, floor, route – all in the price
We do not calculate the price of your move to Mechelen by the hour, but by volume, floor, carrying distances and the route of around 747 km. After a survey you receive a written fixed price – for a flat in the city centre just as for a house in Walem.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Mechelen works with us
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We have no branch in Mechelen; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in the city centre or a house in Walem. Parking the removal van on public land in Mechelen requires a permit from the city, which is applied for online; in the low-traffic (autoluw) city centre, driving ban times also apply – we plan both with you. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB with €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Common questions
No customs, but deadlines: formalities when moving to Belgium
Belgium is an EU member, so your belongings do not have to be declared at customs; an inventory list is still useful for your own overview. What matters are the registration obligations: in Berlin you deregister if you are not moving into a new home in Germany – within two weeks of moving out (§ 17 (2) BMG). In Mechelen, according to the city, you register your new address within eight working days with the civil affairs department.
This can be done online at the digital counter or by appointment at the Huis van de Mechelaar, Reuzenstraat 1. Under EU law you do not need a residence document in the first three months; your EU driving licence remains valid. A car that is used permanently in Belgium must be registered there – the Belgian vehicle registration authority gives the deadlines.
Route, driving time and access to the city centre
The route runs via the A2 into the Ruhr area, crosses the border at Venlo, continues through the Netherlands towards Eindhoven and reaches Mechelen via Antwerp. With around 747 km and about 11.5 hours of driving time including breaks, we plan two to three days including loading and unloading. For lorries over 3.5 tonnes, Viapass charges a kilometre levy in Flanders, and in the Netherlands the vrachtwagenheffing (lorry charge) has applied since 1 July 2026.
According to the city, lorries are not allowed in the low-traffic (autoluw) city centre daily from 11 am to 6 pm, and separate times apply around the market. If your address is there, an access permit is also required; transports over 11 m long and 10 tonnes require a transit permit. Which vehicle we use is decided during the survey.
Fairly calculated moving costs
| Type of move | Price from |

| 3 rooms | €894 |
| 4 rooms | €1,269 |
| House/villa | individual quote |
| Long-distance move | €3.80/km |
For exact figures we recommend a free survey on site.
What goes into the moving costs?
The moving costs depend on factors including the volume, the distance (from €3.80/km) and the floor, with or without a lift. A parking restriction zone can also cause additional costs. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load are also possible.

Mechelen: low-traffic city centre, registration and recycling parks
In the centre of Mechelen, motorised traffic is not allowed at certain times; according to the city, lorries are covered by this ban. In the autoluwe Binnenstad (low-traffic city centre) it applies daily from 11 am to 6 pm, and in the Marktgebied (market area) from Monday to Friday and on Sundays from 11 am to 6 pm as well as on Saturdays from 7.30 am to 6 pm. Cameras record the number plate automatically, and violations result in a fine. Residents, retailers and business owners apply for a permit via the "Vergunning aanvragen" page; information on 015 28 00 00. Loading and unloading is only allowed on the middle section of the Grote Markt.
According to the city, you register your new address within 8 working days of the move with the civil affairs department, online at the digital counter or by appointment at the Huis van de Mechelaar. If your street is in a blue zone or a paid parking zone, apply for a resident's card; in the blue zone you may park for a maximum of 2 hours with the card.
For waste, according to the city, IVAREM runs two recycling parks where waste can be dropped off free of charge or cheaply. Details on locations and rates are on ivarem.be. More on the districts in the Mechelen moving guide and in Living in Mechelen.
