Mechelen guide
Moving to Mechelen: a compact city centre between Brussels and Antwerp
Guide
A move to Mechelen takes you to a Flemish city of around 89,000 inhabitants on the Dijle, between Brussels and Antwerp. The almost circular city centre is barely a kilometre across, with the Grote Markt, Veemarkt and Schoenmarkt; above it all rises the tower of St Rumbold's Cathedral (Sint-Rombouts). Because the centre is low-traffic (autoluw), we plan access, parking restriction and loading times before moving day.
Whether it is a flat in the city centre or a house in one of the districts such as Muizen or Walem: we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 747 km via the Netherlands. Within the EU there are no customs formalities for household goods. We quote the fixed price after the survey; details on long routes can be found under Long-distance moves, further destinations under Locations.

Move to Mechelen: survey first, then a fixed price
Volume, floor, route – all in the price
We do not calculate the price of your move to Mechelen by the hour, but by volume, floor, carrying distances and the route of around 747 km. After a survey you receive a written fixed price – for a flat in the city centre just as for a house in Muizen.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Mechelen works with us
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We have no branch in Mechelen; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in the city centre or a house in Muizen. In Mechelen you apply for a temporary parking restriction for the move via the city's digital counter, 3 to 30 working days in advance depending on the scope – we agree the schedule with you. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB with €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Mechelen raises its own questions: is the new address in the low-traffic city centre, when do you apply for the parking restriction, who puts up the signs and how does address registration work? This guide introduces the city centre around the Grote Markt and the districts of Heffen, Hombeek, Leest, Muizen and Walem, and explains costs, the route from Berlin and formalities. For older buildings with narrow stairs, we plan carriers and carrying distances during the survey.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Mechelen
The city centre and districts of Mechelen
Mechelen's city centre is compact: it is barely a kilometre across, almost circular in shape, with wide, regular streets and squares such as the Grote Markt, the Veemarkt and the Schoenmarkt. The Gothic St Rumbold's Cathedral with its 98-metre tower has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a belfry since 1999.
On 1 January 1977 the surrounding municipalities of Heffen, Hombeek, Leest, Muizen and Walem were incorporated; they lie outside the compact city centre. For the move this means: in the low-traffic city centre, time of day and permits count; in the districts, it is more about access and carrying distances. Our private move service adapts accordingly.
Rail hub between Brussels and Antwerp: living in Mechelen
Mechelen lies on the Dijle and on the Leuven–Dijle Canal. The station on the Brussels–Antwerp line offers connections in all directions; in 1835 one of the first steam railway lines on the continent opened between Brussels and Mechelen. The city is the seat of the Archbishop and Primate of Belgium. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
The official language is Dutch. After moving in, according to the city, you register your new address within eight working days with the civil affairs department, online or at the Huis van de Mechelaar. If you live in a blue zone, apply for a resident's card for your car.
How much will my move cost me?
There is no blanket answer to this question, but our guide prices give you an orientation: 1-room flat from €375, 2-room flat from €609, 3-room flat from €915, 4-room flat from €1,289. For a house or villa you receive an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €3.85/km. You get clarity through a free survey on site.
Moving costs at a glance
Volume and distance (from €3.85/km) form the basis of every price calculation. Added to this are structural factors such as the floor and lift, as well as a parking restriction zone if required. Furniture assembly and a part load can also affect the total price.

Moving to Mechelen: applying for a parking restriction for the removal van
In Mechelen you apply for a temporary parking restriction for the move via the city's digital counter (mechelen.spotbooking.be); the Huis van de Mechelaar accepts paper applications during opening hours. The city gives different deadlines depending on the scope:
- 3 working days in advance if only the pavement and parking spaces are occupied,
- 5 working days for larger projects,
- 30 working days for obstructions such as a diversion, a narrowed lane, less than 1 m of free pavement, a partly occupied cycle path or a closed road.
According to the City of Mechelen, the administration fee is €27 for 1 to 5 days and €54 for 6 to 30 days, plus €0.50 per m² per day for up to 40 m². Payment is made online in advance. On request, the city puts up the signs for an extra charge. Alternatively, you put them up yourself at least 24 hours in advance and send photos of the signs and the vehicles; one sign covers up to 30 m. Follow the official instructions, otherwise the police cannot enforce the parking restriction.
For vehicles over 11 m long and 10 tonnes in the city centre, a transit permit is required, and for the low-traffic zone an access permit. More on planning: Parking restriction zone.
Mechelen: blue zone, resident's card and registration
Anyone living in a blue zone in Mechelen needs a resident's card for their car. According to the city, a maximum parking time of 2 hours with a parking disc applies in the centre, Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm. Up to two cards are possible per address, each valid for one year; the first costs €24, the second €150. It is applied for via the digital counter. Other blue zones apply, for example, in Katanga (maximum 2 hours, Monday to Friday 6 pm to midnight, at weekends 10 am to midnight) and on the Liersesteenweg (maximum 1 hour, daily 9 am to 8 pm). In shopping streets, according to the city, residents may only park between 6 pm and 9 am the following day.
You report the change of address within 8 working days to the Burgerzaken (civil affairs) department of the new municipality, even for a move within Mechelen; an online form is available. Questions about parking are answered by Moovia – Parkeren on 015 42 45 40. The city also refers to the bpost mail forwarding service and to IVAREM for household waste collection, which you also transfer when you move.
