Moving to Grenoble: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Grenoble
Long-distance move to Grenoble: from the Spree to the Isère and Drac
Guide
A move to Grenoble is one of the longest routes we plan from Berlin: the shortest route from Stromstraße is around 1,255 km long and runs via the A9 and the A5 towards Basel, through Switzerland and via Geneva to Grenoble. The city lies where the Drac flows into the Isère, surrounded by the Vercors, Chartreuse and the Chaîne de Belledonne. Because France belongs to the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. What matters instead is journey planning, a parking space and access – whether in the old town around Place Grenette or a flat on the outskirts.
By lorry, including statutory breaks, it is around 19 hours of pure driving time – well over a single day's driving time. We therefore plan at least two days on the road or two drivers, and fix the arrival time. If your flat is not yet available, we store your belongings in Berlin in the meantime; we dismantle and reassemble kitchens and wardrobes, and for a piano there is our piano transport. The formalities involved in moving to France are summarised in Moving to France: customs and process.

What we take care of when you move to Grenoble
Long distance, firm plan
We have no branch in France; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. For the roughly 1,255 km we decide in advance whether the route goes through Switzerland or through eastern France, how many days on the road are needed and when the van will arrive in Grenoble. A large part of the city centre there is a pedestrian zone; the city requires the parking space application at least 15 working days in advance. We clarify who submits the application before booking. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

Well planned over 1,255 km
With a move across national borders, every detail counts: route, days on the road, tolls, parking space application and arrival time. For your move to Grenoble we fix all this in advance and then quote a fixed price with every item listed separately.
Route fixed
Access sorted
Parking space in good time
Planned backwards
Storage to bridge a gap
Ready to settle in
Save with a part load
For smaller moving volumes, a part load (Beiladung) can be cheaper: your household goods are transported together with other consignments heading south and share the load space. In return, on such a long route you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy for students with little furniture.

Your
move, our craft
This guide covers the questions that a move to Grenoble raises: which route does the lorry take, how many days on the road are needed, when must the parking space be applied for and what applies in the pedestrian zone? Then there are the city's districts, the universities around the Université Grenoble Alpes and research centres such as CEA and ESRF, as well as deregistration in Berlin. That way you are prepared before the removal van stands outside your new front door in Grenoble.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Grenoble
Districts in Grenoble: old town, Île Verte, Saint-Bruno, Villeneuve
The centre of Grenoble lies at an altitude of around 212 m on the Isère; around Place Grenette stretch the pedestrian zones of the old town, with old-building flats, markets and cafés. Since 1934 the cable car to the Bastille, the world's first urban aerial cable car, has run from here. For your move this means short distances in everyday life, but access only with special permission.
The Île Verte is one of the most densely populated areas of the city. Also well known are the Berriat-Saint-Bruno district and La Villeneuve, planned between 1970 and 1983 in connection with the Olympic Games, which extends as far as Échirolles. For your move, what matters most is whether the address is in the pedestrian zone or whether a parking space can be applied for directly in front of the building.
University, research and life in Grenoble
Grenoble has around 156,000 inhabitants, with about 665,000 people living in the wider area. Founded in 1339, the university is one of the largest in France with around 45,000 students, and there is also the Institut polytechnique (Grenoble INP) with its engineering schools and the Grenoble École de Management. Major research institutions include the CEA with CEA-Leti, the European Synchrotron ESRF and the Institut Laue-Langevin. We do not quote specific rents, as they depend heavily on location and condition.
Grenoble is regarded as the largest city in the high Alps: the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne are a few kilometres away, Geneva about 150 km to the north and Lyon around 100 km to the north-west. If you are moving from Germany, start your flat search early and only fix the moving day once the key handover and parking space are settled. Our services for households can be found under Home move.
Fixed prices for your move – clearly calculated
With us you always know where you stand. 1-room flats from €365, 2-room flats from €579, 3-room flats from €899 and 4-room flats from €1,289 – that is how simple our price structure is. We calculate larger properties such as houses and villas individually. If you are moving further away, you pay from €3.80 per kilometre for long-distance moves. Arrange your free survey now for a tailor-made quote.
Cost factors at a glance
Your moving price depends on the volume, the distance (from €3.80/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. A parking restriction zone can also incur additional costs. If required, we add furniture assembly or a part load.

Moving to Grenoble: applying for a parking space for the removal van
If you want to park a lorry in front of the building in Grenoble, you apply to the city for a parking permit for a move outside the pedestrian zone (autorisation de stationnement pour travaux ou déménagement). According to the city of Grenoble, the application must be submitted at least 15 working days (jours ouvrés) before moving day, online via the city's procedures platform. The signed permit is returned via the same platform; it is printed out and displayed behind the vehicle's windscreen.
According to the city, the permit includes:
- 4 to 16 consecutive parking spaces for 2 to 14 consecutive days,
- the parking fees, so no parking ticket is needed,
- the setting up and removal of the no-parking signs by the city.
For the use of public space the city charges a fee (redevance) according to its current scale of charges; we deliberately do not quote specific amounts here – they are on grenoble.fr. If a company is commissioned for the move, according to the city the company, with a valid SIRET number, must submit the application and state the number plates of all vehicles. So clarify early who will handle the application. Report a cancellation or change at least 8 working days in advance to [email protected], otherwise the permit will be charged anyway. More on planning can be found under Setting up a parking restriction zone.
Grenoble: pedestrian zones and access when moving
A large part of Grenoble city centre is a pedestrian zone. According to the city, driving and parking there are generally prohibited; access authorisations are available for residents, businesses and, under certain conditions, other user groups. The parking space permit described above applies explicitly only outside the pedestrian zone.
If your new flat is in a pedestrian zone, according to the city of Grenoble a separate procedure is needed: an application for a traffic order (arrêté de circulation) for the move or the works. The permanent access badge for residents or garage owners in the zone is provided free of charge for two years and is collected from the Pôle Accueil Relation Usagers (88 B rue des Alliés). It is not automatically sufficient for moving day itself, because badge holders may only drive in for short stops of around 20 minutes.
In practice this means: check before booking whether the destination address is inside or outside the zone, and allow more lead time for pedestrian zones. Without a permit you may still move, but you have to find a free space yourself and pay where parking is charged; according to the city, signs put up yourself without a permit are penalised.
