Paris: 20 arrondissements AOT and furniture lift

Living in Paris
Paris: from the Marais to Belleville – what the move requires
Districts, flat, formalities
A move to Paris involves three tasks: finding the right arrondissement, securing a flat in a very tight market and organising moving day in a city with little room for lorries. From Berlin it is around 1,050 km by road, usually via Hanover, Cologne and Belgium. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle the transport as a long-distance move – with packing, furniture assembly and, on request, our private move service. We give you the fixed price after the survey.
In Paris there is no classic parking restriction for moves: instead, the city issues an AOT, which you apply for at least 15 days in advance – more on this below. Many period buildings have narrow stairwells and no lift or only a small one; a furniture lift is then the usual solution. If the flat is not yet free, we put your belongings into interim storage. This keeps your move to Paris easy to plan, whether to the Marais or to Montmartre.

How we drive your household goods to Paris
Two days, one team
For around 1,050 km we usually plan a long-distance move to Paris over two days, because the drivers must comply with EU driving time rules. We carry out the survey in Berlin, pack and load, drive with the same team all the way to the new flat and reassemble the furniture there. We quote the price as a fixed price after a survey; our liability for your belongings is governed by the German Commercial Code (HGB). Besides the transport, you can also book packing, assembly and interim storage through our private move service. You apply for the AOT for the parking spot with your "Mon Paris" account; we give you the vehicle details for it.

What
to clarify before moving to Paris
In this guide you will learn how the Paris arrondissements differ, how flat hunting works and which formalities come up after moving in. There is no registration requirement in France like the one in Germany; what matters is health insurance, a bank account and, if applicable, registering your car. For moving day itself, the AOT, the furniture lift and the permitted hours of 7 am to 8 pm are what count. Also bear in mind that good flats are taken quickly and landlords ask for proof of income. How we handle international routes is described under international moves.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Paris
Marais, Montmartre, Batignolles: arrondissements compared
Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements, numbered in a spiral from the centre outwards. The Marais (3e/4e) is characterised by historic lanes, galleries and small shops; Montmartre (18e) sits on the hill around Sacré-Cœur and has many steep streets and steps – a challenge for the removal van. In the 17e arrondissement around Batignolles it is quieter, with parks and residential streets.
Many young professionals live around the Bastille (11e/12e), while Belleville (19e/20e) is multicultural and known for street art. The Quartier Latin in the 5e, with the Sorbonne, is traditionally the student quarter. Which district suits you depends mainly on where you work, your metro line and your budget.
Housing market, workplaces and universities in Paris
The Paris housing market is one of the most expensive in Europe, and good flats are often taken within a short time. Current rents differ greatly by arrondissement and condition; compare listings on French portals and expect landlords to ask for proof of income and often a guarantor. It usually gets somewhat cheaper in the outer arrondissements and in the suburbs.
A large share of office jobs is in the La Défense business district west of the city boundary, where TotalEnergies, among others, has its headquarters. For founders, the Station F campus in the 13e arrondissement is well known. Well-known universities include the Sorbonne, Sciences Po and Université PSL. A dense metro network, parks such as the Buttes-Chaumont and the cultural scene shape everyday life – which is why many people plan a move to Paris despite high rents.
Guide prices for moving to Paris
Small flats stay affordable: for a 1-room flat you pay from €365, for a 2-room flat from €579. Larger households cost correspondingly more – a 3-room flat from €879, a 4-room flat from €1,299. For houses and villas there is an individual quote, and if you are moving further away, you pay from €4.25/km for long-distance moves. Get non-binding advice as part of a free survey.
What determines the price of your Paris move
First of all, the volume plays a central role, followed by the distance, which starts at €4.25/km. Other factors are the floor, whether there is a lift and a possible parking restriction zone in Berlin or an AOT in Paris. For additional services we recommend furniture assembly and a part load.

Moving in Paris: apply for an AOT instead of a parking restriction
In Paris, the city does not reserve a parking space for the removal van. Instead, on application, it issues an AOT ("autorisation d'occupation temporaire", temporary occupation permit). According to paris.fr, the AOT is not mandatory, but it is necessary if you stop outside the paid parking lane, stand in the same place for more than six consecutive hours or use a furniture lift. Without an AOT, you are limited to the parking lane with parking fees and six hours; a furniture lift is then prohibited.
According to the city, the application works as follows:
- online via the "Mon Paris" account (service.paris.fr/demenagement),
- at least 15 days before the move,
- after a positive review you receive a payment link for card payment, followed by the AOT,
- moving out and moving in each require a separate application.
paris.fr lists the fees per vehicle and period. Vehicles under 3.5 t pay €17 (half day) or €27 (full day) on the parking lane and €25 or €40 outside it. From 3.5 t it is €35 or €60 on the parking lane and €50 or €90 outside it. Changes are possible up to two working days before the move; in the event of cancellation there is no refund except in cases of force majeure.
How we plan long-distance moves to France is explained under international moves; on the subject of space outside the building, see also parking restriction zone.
Paris flats without a lift: furniture lift, hours and number plates
According to the city, moves in Paris may only take place between 7 am and 8 pm, for noise and safety reasons. The times stated on your AOT are decisive. If the flat is high up and there is no lift, a furniture lift is the usual solution. It strictly requires an AOT; paris.fr lists €10 (half day) or €20 (full day) for it on the parking lane and €15 or €30 outside it.
According to paris.fr, these rules apply in practice on moving day:
- You must report the number plates of the vehicles used via the link you received before arrival. Without this report, the AOT is no longer valid, and a Forfait Post-Stationnement (parking charge) may follow.
- If you stop outside the parking lane, the AOT must be placed behind the windscreen of every vehicle used.
- You may block spaces yourself with cones ("cônes de Lübeck") ("ventousage"); this time is charged. Bus stops, cycle lanes and spaces for the police or cash-in-transit vehicles are excluded.
- If your space is occupied, the AOT allows another free space in the adjacent parking lane.
If one vehicle parks on the parking lane and another in the delivery zone, according to the city you must create two zones in the application. During the survey we clarify how many vehicles and which furniture lift are needed. More on our furniture transport and on the long-distance move.
