Moving to Genk: a mining town on the Albert Canal

Guide

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 668 km via the A2, A1 and A46 and through Dutch Limburg to Genk.

A move to Genk takes you to a former mining town in the Flemish province of Limburg, with around 68,000 inhabitants and located on the Albert Canal. Hard coal was mined in Winterslag, Waterschei and Zwartberg until 1988; after that, the Ford plant (until 2014) and ArcelorMittal's steelworks shaped the town. The official language is Dutch. For your private move we check access, floor and parking space in advance – in Genk the removal van needs a permit from the city for this.

We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and take care of packing, transport and, on request, assembling your furniture in your new home. Because Belgium and Germany are in the EU, there are no customs for your household goods. What else to bear in mind for moves across borders is explained under International move. Places with their own pages can be found in our locations overview.

What we handle on your move to Genk

Transport from Berlin, arrival in Limburg

Genk has transformed itself from a mining and industrial town into a green, multilingual place in Belgian Limburg: the Hoge Kempen National Park begins to the east, and the Bokrijk estate with its open-air museum belongs to Genk. We have no branch in Belgium; instead we come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit, so we clarify access, parking permit and floor in advance. You handle registration with the city yourself – we tell you which deadline applies. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

Packing service

Boxes, padding and labels by room save time when unpacking in Genk – you decide what we take on with our packing service.

Office move

For companies in Genk we coordinate packing, the journey and setting up so that operations pause as briefly as possible – with an office move.

Senior moves

Relatives can be present during packing in Berlin; in Genk we place the furniture as agreed beforehand – with a senior move.

Furniture transport

We dismantle bulky pieces such as a wardrobe or sofa, pad them and reassemble them in Genk – with furniture transport.
FIXED PRICE AFTER A SURVEY

Well planned to Limburg

We do not quote specific rents in Genk – they depend heavily on the district and the condition of the property. We give you the fixed price for your move after the survey, with transport, permit and assembly as separate items.

01

Loading day and arrival

The lorry needs around ten hours from Berlin; loading, the journey and arrival in Genk are therefore fixed in the schedule beforehand.
02

Access checked in advance

A flat in Winterslag, a house in Termien: lift, stair width and parking space are part of the survey before the move to Genk.
03

Parking space secured

The space outside your new address in Genk requires a permit from the city; we plan the application with you early and do not schedule the move on a market day in the centre.
04

Deadlines in view

We arrange notice, packing dates, the journey and registration in Genk into a plan that runs backwards from moving-in day.
05

Store instead of rush

If the start of your tenancy in Genk is postponed, your household goods are stored in Berlin until we deliver on the new date.
06

Beds ready by evening

At the end, the furniture is in place and the boxes are in the right rooms – the rest of settling in to Genk is up to you.
FOR SMALL LOADS

The low-cost alternative

With only a few pieces of furniture, a part load (Beiladung) to Genk can be cheaper than a lorry of your own: your household goods travel with other consignments towards Belgium. You need some flexibility on the delivery day – ideal if only single items are following.

From
the permit to registration

One team, every service

When moving to Genk, there are a few practical points: the permit for the removal van on the street, registration with the city, your car and the choice of district. If you are moving from Germany, as an EU citizen you register with the municipality within three months; for moves within Belgium, according to the city, a deadline of eight days applies. In the centre, residents' parking and market days come into play too. A checklist for Belgium can be found in the article Emigrating to Belgium.

Planning safely and calmly

A schedule worked backwards from moving-in day – notice in Berlin, permit for the street space, packing dates, registration with the city – keeps your private move, senior move or student move to Genk manageable.

Furniture, boxes, carrying routes

With our packing service, careful furniture transport and a confirmed parking space, furniture arrives in former miners' houses in Winterslag or Waterschei as well as in flats in the centre of Genk.

Costs, timing and special cases

The roughly 668 km from Berlin have the biggest influence on costs; on top come a second driver or an overnight stop and the city's fee for street space. Small volumes travel more cheaply by part load to Genk.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to Genk

Costs, districts, route, registration, parking and bulky waste – answered briefly.
Costs depend on the size of the flat, the floor, access and the distance – from Berlin it is around 668 km, plus a second driver or an overnight stop and the city's fee for street space. Our guide prices by number of rooms are in the price overview above. After a survey you receive a binding fixed price.

Genk's districts at a glance

Genk is made up of districts such as Centrum, Winterslag, Waterschei, Zwartberg, Termien, Sledderlo, Langerlo and Bokrijk. Separate workers' estates grew up around the three former collieries; the Winterslag colliery site is now home to C-mine, a cultural and leisure centre with a cinema, restaurants and part of the LUCA art school.

In the south, in Langerlo, lies the port on the Albert Canal. Bokrijk, with its open-air museum and arboretum, is a large green area, and the Hoge Kempen National Park adjoins to the east. For the move, the address matters: an estate house in Winterslag needs different planning from a flat in the centre with a residents' parking zone. Our private move adapts to this.

Work, higher education and leisure in Genk

After the end of mining and the closure of the Ford plant on 18 December 2014, Genk has reinvented itself. A major employer is ArcelorMittal's stainless steel works; the port in Langerlo has a container terminal with a rail connection. The E313 (Antwerp–Liège) and E314 (Leuven–Aachen) motorways run past the town.

At C-mine, art students of the LUCA School of Arts study, and the nearest university is in neighbouring Hasselt. For leisure there is the Hoge Kempen National Park with heathland and pine forest, the Bokrijk open-air museum and the cultural programme at C-mine. If you are moving from Germany, you should factor in some Dutch for dealing with the authorities.

Transparency in moving costs

Transparency comes first for us: we move 1-room flats from €339, 2-room flats from €599. For 3-room flats we charge from €879, for 4-room flats from €1,324. A house or villa requires an individual quote, while long-distance moves are charged from €4.20/km. Arrange a free survey now to clarify all the details.

Calculating your moving price

For an exact price, the moving volume, the number of kilometres (from €4.20/km) as well as the floor and lift play an important role. We also take into account whether a parking restriction zone has to be set up. On request we also handle furniture assembly or a part load.

How versatile our service is

We offer you a comprehensive portfolio of moving services.

Long-distance move from Berlin to Belgium

Removal van in Genk: permit for parking restrictions and space on the street

Since 1 May 2026 a new regulation has applied in Genk: anyone who temporarily needs space on the street, pavement or a parking space for a move, a delivery or works must apply for a permit beforehand. According to the city of Genk, the application is made online and should be submitted at least 10 working days in advance; if applied for in time, the permit is ready after two to three working days.

  • The municipal Mobiliteit department reviews the application and, if approved, sends a request for payment. Payment is digital only, and the permit only arrives after payment has been received.
  • According to the city, using public space for moves is not permitted on market days or during events in the centre.
  • The fee is charged per day begun: according to the city, the first day is free, days 2 to 14 cost €10 per day, and from day 15 it is €25 per day.
  • You may not put up no-parking signs yourself. The city's technical services put them up, for which the city states a flat fee of €50.
  • For late applications, the city states a flat fee of €100.

Help is available at the quick-service counter in the town hall or on 089 65 36 00. On permits and signs for moves, read Parking restriction zone; the route from Berlin is described in Long-distance move Berlin – Genk.

Genk: residents' parking in the centre, Fruitmarkt and recycling parks

Parking is regulated in the centre of Genk. According to the city, parking on the Fruitmarkt is not possible every Thursday from 5:00 am to 3:00 pm, so do not plan your moving day for that morning. Anyone moving into the red paid zone in the centre or into a blue zone can apply for a digital residents' card linked to the number plate. According to the city, the first card costs €200 per year in the red zone and is free in the blue zone. A maximum of two cards is possible per address; the second costs €250 per year. As assigned parking areas in the red zone, the city lists the Nieuwstraat, the Winterslagstraat (Lourdeskapelpark), the Reinpadstraat and the gravel car park on the Europalaan, among others, with the De Villardell multi-storey car park as an alternative. Without valid parking rights, according to its parking rules, the city may charge a fee of €25 per part of the day.

For your registration, according to the city of Genk, a deadline of eight days applies to moves within Belgium; you book appointments via the city's online system. The city does not list registration steps for moves from abroad, so please clarify these in advance with the citizens' service.

For disposing of bulky waste, the Genk-Zuid (Bosdel 36) and Genk-Noord (Horizonlaan 7) recycling parks are available. Private individuals use them with their electronic identity card (eID). Everyday tips can be found in Living in Genk.
