Destination: Bremen
Moving to Bremen: the Weser, the Schnoor, the Viertel and traditional Bremen houses
explained in brief
Bremen lies on the Weser and, together with Bremerhaven, forms the state of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, the smallest German federal state. The old town with its market square, cathedral and the Schnoor quarter is the historic centre; in districts such as Steintor, Ostertor or Findorff, narrow traditional Bremen houses (Altbremer Häuser) define the streetscape. Mercedes-Benz, Airbus and the space company OHB are among the major employers, and the University of Bremen and the other universities bring many students to the city. Anyone planning a move to Bremen should think early about registration, bulky waste and the stopping space for the lorry.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 390 km via the A2, A7 and A27 to Bremen; that is about 6 hours including a break. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Bremen or from Bremen back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route is described in detail on the page Moving Berlin – Bremen. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, a shared load is often cheaper. We build stopping spaces at both addresses into the plan. We coordinate dates with the handover of your flat.

Our part of your move to Bremen
Planning from Berlin, arrival on the Weser
We have no branch in Bremen; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether a traditional Bremen house in the Viertel, a flat in Findorff or a house in Schwachhausen. We apply in good time for the parking restriction outside the new address, following the city's requirements. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of the flat. We label boxes and furniture by destination room.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Bremen
Bremen's districts for your move
Bremen is divided into five boroughs with 18 districts and a total of 88 localities. The Viertel (Steintor and Ostertor) is the cultural heart, with cafés, bars and a student atmosphere; many narrow traditional Bremen houses with steep stairs stand here. In Schwachhausen you will find stately period buildings and quiet residential streets, while Findorff is popular for its short distances and weekly market.
In the north, Vegesack lies on the Weser; in the west are Walle and Gröpelingen, and in the east Horn-Lehe with the university. We do not give specific rents, as they depend heavily on location and condition. For the move, what counts above all is access, the floor and the stairwell: a traditional Bremen house needs different planning from a new build with a lift.
People coming from Berlin are often surprised by how narrow the stairs in traditional Bremen houses are: large wardrobes and sofas sometimes only fit through when dismantled. So measure the stairwell and doors in advance, or let us do it during the survey. In Bremen's pedestrian zone, the removal van needs an exemption outside delivery times.
Working and living in Bremen: economy, universities, leisure
Bremen is a major industrial location: with its plant, the Mercedes-Benz Group is the city's largest private employer. In aerospace there is Airbus, where the wings of Airbus aircraft undergo final assembly, and the OHB technology group; the steelworks now belong to ArcelorMittal, and port cargo handling is done by the BLG Logistics Group. Academically, the city is shaped by the University of Bremen, the universities of applied sciences and the private Constructor University in Vegesack.
For leisure there are the Bürgerpark, the Weser promenade, the Universum Science Center and the Schnoor quarter; Werder Bremen play at the Weserstadion. For the move, the dense housing in districts such as Steintor or Findorff means that a free stopping space outside the door should be planned early.
Bremen is connected to the trunk road network via the A1 and the A27, and trams and buses run within the city. If you live without a car, you will manage well in the inner districts. For the lorry from Berlin, the usual route is via the A2, A7 and A27, around 390 km from Stromstraße in Moabit.

Registration and parking when moving to Bremen
After moving into a home in Bremen, according to service.bremen.de you must register within two weeks. If no appointment is available within that time, it is enough to book an appointment at a BürgerServiceCenter in good time.
The city lists these documents:
- ID card or passport (an eID card or electronic residence permit does not replace a passport),
- the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), whether renting or owning (for owners as a declaration of ownership),
- if someone represents you, a power of attorney and the signed registration form.
According to the city, registration is free of charge. Online it works via wohnsitzanmeldung.de; for this you need, among other things, a BundID user account, an NFC-enabled smartphone or card reader and the AusweisApp.
For moving day it is worth looking at the parking rules. In a restricted stopping zone, according to the Office for Roads and Traffic (Amt für Straßen und Verkehr), stopping on the carriageway is only allowed for up to three minutes, except for getting in and out and for loading and unloading, which must be done without delay. Anyone standing longer is parking. In addition, according to ASV Bremen, residents' parking in the Neustadt starts on 2 November 2026.
A reserved stopping space outside the front door prevents waiting times during loading and unloading. How we organise this is explained under Parking restriction zone. You will find more places on our page Bremen location.
Bulky waste, recycling stations and the pedestrian zone in Bremen
Before a move there is usually bulky waste. According to Bremer Stadtreinigung (the city cleaning service), every private household is entitled to one free collection per year of up to 5 cubic metres, and individual items may be no more than 2 metres long. The date is booked via “Sperrmüllabfuhr bestellen” (order bulky-waste collection) and confirmed by email or post. According to Stadtreinigung, each additional collection costs €85.00. Bulky items may be put out on the kerb at the earliest the evening before (after 18.00) and must be there by 6.00 on the day of collection at the latest.
Alternatively, you can drop it off yourself. According to Stadtreinigung, the recycling stations in Blumenthal, Borgfeld, Burglesum, Hastedt, Hohentor, Kirchhuchting, Oberneuland and Osterholz accept up to 2 cubic metres, and Blockland also larger amounts. Furniture must be separated from wood, large electrical appliances and metals.
If your address is in Bremen's pedestrian zone, you need an exemption for journeys outside delivery times. According to service.bremen.de, it can be applied for. Clarify this before the moving date so that the van and movers can get to the front door as planned.
For questions about dates, you can reach Bremer Stadtreinigung's customer service, according to Stadtreinigung, on 0421 361-3611 (Monday to Friday, 8.00 to 16.00). Plan the collection so that it falls before you move out of your old flat and bulky items do not stand on the pavement longer than necessary.
