Guide to Chur
Moving to Chur: cathedral, Rhine and Brambrüesch
at a glance
Chur is the capital of the canton of Graubünden and lies on the Alpine Rhine; the city is the seat of the Diocese of Chur and is often described as the oldest town in Switzerland. Maladers was incorporated in 2020, Haldenstein in 2021 and Tschiertschen-Praden in 2025. Above the old town with its cathedral, an aerial cableway runs up to the Brambrüesch recreation area. Anyone planning a move to Chur is moving to Switzerland: household goods are cleared through customs as household removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut), and the old town may only be driven into with a permit.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 816 km via Lindau and the Rhine Valley to Chur; that is roughly 12.5 hours including breaks – which is why we use two drivers or an overnight stop. For Switzerland, you declare your household goods as household removal goods using form 18.44; within the EU there would be no customs formalities. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Chur or from Chur back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Chur.

How your move to Chur works with us
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Graubünden
We have no branch in Chur; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in the old town, a flat in Masans or a house on Rosenhügel. We apply in good time for permission to stop outside the new address, following the City of Chur's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of your flat.

Not much to move? Part load!
For smaller volumes or single items, a part load (Beiladung) to Chur can be cheaper: your goods share the load space with other consignments on the same route. In return you need a little flexibility on the delivery day; whether a run towards Chur is coming up, we will tell you after your enquiry. It is also handy if a few items need to follow after the main move.

From
planning to assembly
A move to Chur raises many questions: which quarter suits you, how does the lorry get a driving permit for the old town, how does customs clearance work and where do you register? This guide introduces the old town, Masans, Rosenhügel and Welschdörfli, explains registration, parking and waste disposal and describes the roughly 816 km journey from Berlin via Lindau and the Rhine Valley. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Chur
Chur's districts at a glance
Chur's old town, with its narrow lanes, the cathedral and the bishop's residence, is the historic centre; here you live in older buildings, but you need to factor in a driving permit for the move. Masans in the north was once a separate hamlet and has grown together with the core of the city; newer residential buildings have been built there and on former sites such as the barracks site.
On the hillside lies the quieter Rosenhügel with views of the Graubünden Alps, while Welschdörfli is one of the oldest settled areas of the city. Since the mergers, Maladers, Haldenstein and Tschiertschen-Praden also belong to Chur. For the move, access, gradient and floor are what count – we clarify these during the survey.
Flat hunting, employers and quality of life in Chur
The housing market in Chur is considered to be in demand. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location, size and condition. As the cantonal capital, Chur offers jobs in the cantonal administration, at the Cantonal Hospital of Graubünden with around 1,700 employees and at the Rhaetian Railway; in addition there are the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons, the University of Teacher Education and the Theological University.
The mountains right on the city's doorstep add to the quality of life: Brambrüesch can be reached by aerial cableway, and neighbouring municipalities such as Arosa are close by. Chur station connects SBB and the Rhaetian Railway. If you are coming from Berlin, you should plan registration, health insurance and customs formalities early.

What you should know about moving prices
Two key factors are the volume of your belongings and the distance – the latter is charged from €4.20/km. The floor, a lift and a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also affect the final price. If needed, furniture assembly and a part load complete the offer.

Arriving in Chur: residents' services and the old-town driving permit
According to the city, newcomers to Chur must register in person at the counters of the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste) within 14 days of moving in. These are located in the Stadthaus, Masanserstrasse 2 (telephone 081 254 41 56). As documents, the city lists a valid identity card or passport for Swiss nationals, plus the tenancy agreement or housing certificate with the official dwelling number. Foreign nationals need further documents depending on their situation, such as an employment contract and proof of insurance with a Swiss health insurer.
You can pre-register provisionally via an online form, which shortens the time at the counter. Opening hours according to the city: Monday and Wednesday 8.30 to 11.30 and 14.00 to 16.30, Tuesday 8.30 to 11.30, Thursday 8.30 to 11.30 and 14.00 to 18.00, Friday 8.00 to 14.00.
For the old town: according to the City of Chur, motor vehicles may only drive into it at certain times. The driving permit can be applied for online (bewilligungen.chur.ch), and a day driving permit is also available. The page does not say who needs a permit when or which times apply, so we clarify this for your address in advance.
All information on the route can be found in the long-distance moving guide for Chur. Everyday life and housing are described in Living in Chur.
Household removal goods, parking and waste disposal in Chur
When moving from Germany, customs is also part of the plan. According to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG), moving your place of residence to Switzerland is the most important condition for importing household removal goods duty-free. The items must have been used by you personally for at least six months. On import you present form 18.44 to the customs office of entry; clearance must take place during the opening hours for commercial goods. More on this under international move.
On parking in Chur: during the day, according to the city, the maximum parking time of the respective space generally applies. Cards for several days are only issued in exceptional cases; they cost CHF 16 per day or CHF 8 per half day. Long-term parking overnight on public land requires a permit, which according to the city costs CHF 50 per month and is applied for at the city police (Support and Trade Police, Kornplatz 10, telephone 081 254 54 54).
On waste disposal, the city describes a multi-collection point, an animal carcass collection point and around 40 collection points across the city. Collection dates by street and the prices for disposal and recycling are online; information is available from the Werkbetrieb (telephone 081 254 47 46). The city also offers a waste collection schedule as a PDF and lists the types of waste collected, including bulky waste. Before the move, clarify what you will dispose of yourself and what we should take away.
