Living in Stralsund: from the old-town island to Andershof

Living in Stralsund
Stralsund: Hanseatic town between the sound and the town ponds
Neighbourhoods, work, offices
A move to Stralsund takes you to the oldest town in Pomerania: town charter since 1234, a founding member of the Hanseatic League and, since 2002, a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Wismar for its old town. The old town is surrounded by the Strelasund and three town ponds – almost an island. According to the 2022 census, just under 54,000 people live in the city, which is divided into eight city districts. The Rügendamm causeway and the Rügen Bridge lead straight onto the island of Rügen.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and bring your household goods to Stralsund via the A11 and A20 – around 271 kilometres. Whether a period building in the old town or a flat in Knieper West: we take care of packing, furniture assembly and storage on request. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and our liability for your goods is under the German Commercial Code (HGB). More on the scope of services under private move.

How we plan your move-in in Stralsund
A day trip to the coast
We come from Berlin and complete your move to Stralsund in one day: around 271 kilometres via the A114, A10, A11 and A20, a good three and a half hours for a lorry. In the old town the streets are narrow and parking is scarce; we therefore ask the public order office (Ordnungsamt) how the removal van can stop in front of the building. Whether a room at the start of your studies at the university or a whole household – we quote the fixed price after the survey, and liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Further destinations can be found under service areas.

Before
the move to Stralsund
Before the move to Stralsund there are three questions: the old town or one of the outer districts, when to go to the registration office in Schillstraße, and where the removal van will stop? Residents' parking zones apply in the old town, and traffic questions are handled by the Ordnungsamt. Electricity, water and gas are supplied by the Stadtwerke (municipal utility) or your provider – report your meter readings on moving day. That way everyday life in Stralsund starts without surprises.

Frequently asked questions about living in Stralsund
Old town, Knieper, Süd: Stralsund's districts
The old town is surrounded by the Strelasund and the three town ponds – Knieperteich, Frankenteich and Moorteich – and has been a World Heritage Site since 2002. Here you live in brick and gabled houses around the Alter Markt and the harbour, with narrow streets and residents' parking zones. To the north lies the Knieper district with Knieper Nord, which has a town beach, and the prefab blocks of Knieper West, renovated after reunification.
To the south lie Andershof and Devin, incorporated in 1928, with their own primary school in Andershof and the Devin park. Other residential areas are Grünhufe, with its own railway stop on the line to Rostock, as well as Franken Mitte and the Frankensiedlung estate. Altogether the city area is divided into eight districts. Which location suits you depends on whether old-town charm or parking and greenery matter more to you.
Working and living in Stralsund
One of the largest employers in the region is the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund (German federal pension insurance) with around 1,800 employees (as of October 2024). In addition there are Helios with the Krankenhaus am Sund and Krankenhaus West hospitals, the Stadtwerke, Volksbank Vorpommern and the Stralsund brewery. The former Volkswerft shipyard has belonged to the city since 2022 and is now a business park with around 20 companies. The Hochschule Stralsund, a campus university with about 2,500 students, is in the north of the city.
In everyday life, the water and Rügen shape the city: the Meeresmuseum and Ozeaneum at the harbour, the Sundpromenade, the Brunnenaue as the largest city park and the drive over the Rügen Bridge onto the island. Long-distance trains run from the main station towards Berlin, Hamburg and Rostock, and within the city there is a regular bus network. We do not quote specific rents because they vary greatly by location and fittings.

From Berlin to Stralsund – and back
We come from Berlin and carry out moves to Stralsund as well as back. The page Moving from Berlin to Stralsund describes the route and driving time; further destinations can be found in the overview of service areas and under long-distance moves.
Stralsund: residents' parking zones A 1 and A 2 in the old town
According to the Hanseatic city, Stralsund's old town has had two residents' parking zones since 1 November 2019: A 1 (northern old town) and A 2 (southern old town). The boundary runs along Apollonienmarkt, Ossenreyerstraße and Heilgeiststraße. Within your own zone, the permit is also valid on the municipally managed parking areas in the old town, Frankendamm and Frankenwall. People whose main residence is in the area are eligible, and one permit per year is issued for one vehicle. If you are moving into the old town, it is best to apply right after registering.
The city states the following costs: half a year €72.00 online or €74.00 at the office, one year €105.00 online or €108.00 at the office. For the application you need your ID card, the vehicle registration certificate and, if the keeper is someone else, a keeper's authorisation. The responsible office is the Amt für Planung und Bau (planning and building office, Bauhofstraße 4); the first application is made online via the service portal.
On the city pages we checked, we did not find a separate application for a moving-day parking restriction. Traffic questions are handled by the Ordnungsamt, traffic affairs department (Schillstraße 5–7, tel. 03831 253 745). According to the city, the public service number 115 names the responsible authority, Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 18.00. How we set up stopping zones is explained under parking restriction zone.
Stralsund: registration office, documents and deadlines after moving in
Anyone moving to Stralsund must, according to the Hanseatic city, register with the registration authority within two weeks. You need to bring an ID card, where applicable a passport and child's passport, a birth or marriage certificate and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeber- or Vermieterbescheinigung). According to the city, registration is free of charge. The public service number 115 also provides information on the required documents, fees and local contacts.
Registering or changing your address is possible via the state's service portal, and you can pre-register a secondary residence via the city's online service portal. For a personal visit, an appointment can be booked online around the clock. The registration office is at Schillstraße 5–7 (tel. 03831 253 780). It is open on Mondays from 8 to 12, Tuesdays from 8 to 12 and 13 to 18, Thursdays from 8 to 12 and 13 to 16 and Fridays from 8 to 12, and on Wednesdays by appointment only.
Schedule registration for the first days after moving in so that the residents' parking permit for the old town does not have to wait either, because it depends on your main residence being in the area. Help with boxes and assembly is offered by our move with assembly. Location information: moving company Stralsund.
