From Berlin to Greifswald
Moving to Greifswald: university and Hanseatic town on the Bodden
Guide
Greifswald is a university and Hanseatic town with around 56,000 inhabitants, located on the River Ryck, which flows into the Greifswald Bodden lagoon here, between the islands of Rügen and Usedom. The university, founded in 1456, and the Universitätsmedizin Greifswald (University Medicine) are the largest employers, along with research institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics. Many people therefore move here to study or for a job in science. The old town, with its market square, St Nicholas' Cathedral and gabled houses, has narrow streets and little parking space, whereas Schönwalde and the Ostseeviertel have multi-storey residential blocks. For your move to Greifswald we check access, floor and stopping space at the new address in advance.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 236 km via the A11 and the A20 to Greifswald – a good three hours on the road. We quote the fixed price after a survey; whether it is an old building in the old town with little parking or a flat in Schönwalde, we plan carrying distances and stopping space in advance. Our services for households are listed under Home moves. The route in detail is described on the page Moving Berlin – Greifswald; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB.

A fixed price for your move to Greifswald
Calculated after a survey for your fresh start in Greifswald
For your move to Greifswald we calculate a fixed price after a survey – based on the size of your home, floor, access and the roughly 236 km route. Packing, transport and assembly are listed as separate items. Call us on 01625978461 and arrange an appointment.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of when you move to Greifswald
Planned in Berlin, arriving on the Ryck
We have no branch in Greifswald; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask in advance how narrow the access is and where the van can stop – for example in the old town around the market square, in the Fleischervorstadt with its parking scheme, or in the residential blocks of Schönwalde. We pack furniture and boxes carefully for the journey. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuables.

Well planned to Greifswald
We quote the fixed price for your move to Greifswald after the survey – packing, transport over around 236 km, stopping space and assembly are listed as separate items. We do not quote specific rents; in the old town as in the Ostseeviertel, they depend heavily on location and condition.

Move affordably with a part load
For smaller moving volumes or students taking only a few pieces of furniture, a part load (Beiladung) can be cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments on the same route towards the Baltic. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy at the start of semester in Greifswald.

Everything
for your move
Many factors play a role when moving to Greifswald: the choice of district, electricity and water from the Stadtwerke (municipal utilities), registration within two weeks, and space for the removal van in the old town or the Fleischervorstadt with their parking schemes. For many newcomers, proximity to the University of Greifswald, whose old-town campus lies around the baroque main building, also matters. How the journey from Berlin works is explained under Moving Berlin – Greifswald.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Greifswald
Districts of Greifswald: old town, Wieck, Eldena, Schönwalde
Greifswald's old town, with its market square, St Nicholas' Cathedral and historic gabled houses, is the heart of the town; the university's old-town campus is also here. Living here means short distances but little parking. Between around 1956 and 1990 the large housing estates of Schönwalde I/Südstadt, Schönwalde II and the Ostseeviertel were built – with many flats in multi-storey blocks.
Towards the Bodden lie the former fishing villages of Wieck, with its wooden bascule bridge over the Ryck, a landmark of the town, and Eldena, with the monastery ruins painted by Caspar David Friedrich and a bathing beach on the Dänische Wiek. Both have retained their small-scale maritime character. For the move, the address is what matters most: a gabled house in the old town needs different planning from a block in Schönwalde.
University, research and everyday life in Greifswald
Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald is the second-oldest university in the Baltic region after Rostock; together with the Universitätsmedizin Greifswald it is the town's largest employer. There are also research institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics with the Wendelstein 7-X fusion experiment and the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology.
In everyday life, short distances and the water are what count: a towpath runs along the Ryck to the Bodden, Eldena has a bathing beach, and Rügen and Usedom are nearby. Together with Stralsund, Greifswald forms a joint regional centre (Oberzentrum). If you are arriving at the start of semester, fix your moving day early so that registration and stopping space fit into the first two weeks.

Parking and access when moving to Greifswald: city centre, Fleischervorstadt and resident zones
When moving to Greifswald, the parking space outside the door often makes the difference. The town writes that "parking schemes exist for the city centre and the Fleischervorstadt". The municipal car parks are managed by the Greifswalder Parkraumbewirtschaftungsgesellschaft (GPG), and according to the town you can pay cashless at all municipal car parks.
- Resident parking: the town counts twelve resident parking areas. The resident parking permit is only valid in the zone designated in each case. One example is area 3, with Hans-Fallada-Straße, Karl-Marx-Platz and Bahnhofstraße up to the station.
- Contacts: for resident parking permits the town gives the telephone number 03834 8536-4120, and for general questions the town administration on 03834 8536-0.
We have not found a dedicated town page on parking restrictions for moves. So ask the town administration early whether and how you can reserve space for the removal van outside your front door. Allow enough lead time and state the street, date and vehicle. Also bear in mind that your resident parking permit is only valid in your own zone. Cashless payment at the municipal car parks also makes it easier to park accompanying vehicles. On request we coordinate with the authorities, see Parking restriction zone. More about our work locally can be found under Moving company Greifswald.
Greifswald: online registration, recycling centres and bulky waste
After moving in, a registration deadline of two weeks applies: "Anyone who moves into a dwelling must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in" (§ 17 (1) of the Federal Registration Act, BMG). In Greifswald, the town refers to wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de for electronic residence registration. According to its operator, the portal handles registration online, free of charge and without a visit to the authorities; it starts with a user account and ends with updating your identity document. The town also offers online appointment booking in case you want to deal with a matter in person. On its administrative services page it also lists an online "Umzug" (moving) service from the citizens' service.
For disposing of bulky waste, the town names the district's supply and disposal company (VEVG), which has a form for registering bulky waste collections. In Greifswald the company operates two recycling centres: Eckhardsberg 8/10 (tel. 03834 58 40 26) and Ladebower Chaussee (tel. 03834 58 40 11). According to VEVG, they accept waste from private customers and very small quantities from businesses. The page does not give opening hours, so ask by telephone.
Detailed information on everyday life can be found in the article Living in Greifswald. If you need to declutter before the move, our clearance service can help.
