Mons guide
Moving to Mons: belfry, Capital of Culture and Hainaut
Guide
A move to Mons takes you to the capital of the Walloon province of Hainaut. The mainly French-speaking city was European Capital of Culture in 2015 together with Pilsen; NATO headquarters SHAPE lies on its territory. The city centre grew in an almost circular shape on a hill between the Haine and the Trouille, and several streets are pedestrian zones. That is why we clarify access, parking restriction and delivery times before moving day.
Whether it is a flat in the city centre or a house in Jemappes: we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 814 km via Aachen, Liège and Namur. Within the EU there are no customs formalities for household goods. We quote the fixed price after the survey; details on long routes can be found under Long-distance moves, further destinations under Locations.

For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB with €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Mons raises its own questions: how early do you apply for the police order for the removal van, when are deliveries allowed in the pedestrian zone, how do you get the resident's card and where do you declare your residence? This guide introduces the city centre inside the R50 ring and places such as Jemappes, and explains costs, the route from Berlin and formalities.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Mons
City centre, ring road and surroundings of Mons
Over the centuries, the city centre of Mons developed in an almost circular shape on the hill between the Haine to the north and the Trouille to the south; today it is enclosed by the small R50 ring road. Its landmark is the Baroque belfry of 1661 to 1672, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of belfries. Several streets around the Grand-Place are reserved for pedestrians.
To the west, the Trouille flows into the Haine at the district of Jemappes, and to the north runs the Nimy–Blaton–Péronnes canal. For the move this means: in the city centre, delivery times, the hillside location and the permit count; outside, it is more about access and carrying distances. Our private move service adapts accordingly.
Capital of Culture, SHAPE and Doudou: living in Mons
Mons is the capital of Hainaut and was European Capital of Culture in 2015. Since 1977 the site of SHAPE, NATO's military headquarters, has been located within the city. Every year on the Sunday after Whitsun, the city celebrates the Ducasse de Mons, popularly known as the Doudou. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
After moving in, you declare your residence with the city, in Belgium according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior within eight working days; the town hall on the Grand-Place is responsible, and for EU citizens arriving for the first time the Service des Étrangers (foreigners' department). If you have a car, apply for the resident's card at the Mobilité department.

Moving to Mons: applying for use of the street and a parking restriction
In Mons, the city regulates the use of public space for a move or building site (occupation espace public pour déménagement ou chantier). Applications are handled by the Gestion de l'Espace Public department of the Mons-Quévy police zone. Anyone occupying the carriageway for a move needs a police order (arrêté de police) from the Service Aménagement du Territoire & Mobilité (planning and mobility department).
The City of Mons specifies:
- a period of at least 15 working days (jours ouvrables) between the application and the start of the works,
- a PDF form, which must be filled in completely,
- the option for private individuals to apply for no-parking signs under certain conditions.
The order does not exempt you from the local parking rules. The city's page does not mention a fee; ask the department about it (telephone 065 97 91 30). In one place the page refers to 15 working days, in another to 15 days; to be on the safe side, plan for the longer period. For paid parking in the city centre, a maximum of 3 hours applies Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, and the first 2 hours are free. Anyone exceeding the time or not displaying a ticket pays €30 per day, according to the city. More on planning: Parking restriction zone.
Mons: resident's card and change of address
The City of Mons issues a parking card for residents (carte de stationnement pour riverain), which grants parking concessions in the streets named on the card. The first card per household is free, and a maximum of two cards are possible. The second costs €60 for the eight zones of the city centre and €24 for the zones outside the centre. It is applied for at the Mobilité department, online or using a form, with a copy of your ID card (front and back) and of the vehicle registration certificate in the name of the vehicle keeper. For company or leased vehicles, the city requires a certificate from the employer. In streets other than those named on the card, the normal parking rules apply.
The change of address is made via the electronic citizens' portal (guichet électronique) at the Hôtel de Ville, Grand-Place 22, 7000 Mons. The city's page on changes of address excludes the first arrival of a foreign national; the Service des Étrangers is responsible for this. Anyone coming from Germany should therefore check with the city in advance which procedure applies to them.
