Breda Guide
Arriving in Breda, Between Rotterdam and Antwerp
The first few weeks
Breda lies in the province of North Brabant on the old trade route between Rotterdam and Antwerp; the municipality has around 190,000 inhabitants. Besides the city itself, it includes the villages of Bavel, Prinsenbeek, Teteringen, Ulvenhout and Hazeldonk, while the former villages of Ginneken and Princenhage are now city districts. The historic centre is home to the Gothic Grote Kerk, the 17th-century Begijnhof and the Kasteel van Breda, seat of the Royal Netherlands Military Academy. Right next to it lies Valkenberg park. The Mark and the Aa of Weerijs rivers meet within the municipality; you can reach much of the centre on foot or by bike.
Within the EU there is no customs declaration for your household goods, but there are separate rules for registration, parking and waste. We handle your home removal from Berlin right to your new door in Breda, with packing, transport and assembly. The schedule and route are described in our guide to a long-distance move to Breda; further destinations can be found under long-distance moves. For the formalities after arrival – registration, BSN, Afvalpas – this guide helps further down.

What We Take On – and What Is Up to You in Breda
Transport from Berlin, paperwork on your side
We have no branch in the Netherlands; instead we drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit, around 707 km via Venlo to Breda – more than one day's driving time, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. We ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance. Whether you may load in a no-parking area is something you clarify with the Gemeente (municipality); we set the delivery day to match. For your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB, § 451e: €620 per m³). You handle registration, BSN and health insurance yourself; if the flat is not yet available, we provide interim storage. Further destinations can be found under Locations.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to Breda
Neighbourhoods and Villages – Where Newcomers Live in Breda
The municipality of Breda comprises the city itself and the villages of Bavel, Prinsenbeek, Teteringen, Ulvenhout and Hazeldonk. The former villages of Ginneken and Princenhage are now city districts. The centre is home to the Grote Markt, Grote Kerk, Begijnhof, Kasteel and Valkenberg park – with short distances, but narrow streets for the removal van.
North of the city, the Haagse Beemden expansion area was built from the 1980s onwards, with homes, offices and Breda-Prinsenbeek station. The Chassé Theater has stood on the site of the former Chassé barracks since 1995. Which neighbourhood suits you depends on your commute, school and budget. According to the Gemeente, every neighbourhood and village has a wijkteam (neighbourhood team), often also a wijk- or dorpsraad (neighbourhood or village council) and a buurthuis (community centre) – good first points of contact. Before you commit, also take a look at the stairwell, parking situation and surroundings.
Flat Hunting, Work and Study in Breda
We deliberately do not quote specific rents here, because they depend heavily on location and fittings. Search early via the large Dutch portals and estate agents, keep proof of income and ID ready, and expect landlords to ask for a deposit. For registration you will later need a tenancy or purchase agreement or the written consent of the main tenant.
Breda is home to the St. Joost Academy of Art and Design, the Avans School of International Studies and Breda University of Applied Sciences. Economically, there is food and mechanical engineering industry, and the Royal Cosun group has its headquarters here. Rail and motorway link Breda with Tilburg, Roosendaal and Utrecht; Rotterdam and Antwerp lie on the old trade route through the city. NAC Breda, Dutch champions in 1921, play at the Rat Verlegh Stadium. Besides the centre, the Spanjaardsgat, the Haven and the Prinsenkade are worth a first stroll to get to know your new city.
How Much Does a Move to Breda Cost?
As a guide for planning your move: one room from €375, two rooms from €589, three rooms from €894, four rooms from €1,344. If you live in a house or villa, you receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves, a rate from €3.80/km also applies. The calculation is most accurate after a free survey.
What the price depends on
We calculate fairly: the decisive factors are moving volume, route length (from €3.80/km), floor and lift. A required parking restriction zone is also taken into account. Optionally bookable: furniture assembly and a shared load.

Registering in Breda: Deadline, Appointment and Documents at the Gemeente
According to the Gemeente Breda, anyone moving to the Netherlands from abroad for the first time, or staying for at least four months within the next six months, must register in person within 5 days of arrival. Partner and children come along; you arrange an appointment in advance, separately for EU citizens and non-EU citizens.
- The day of the appointment counts as the registration date. Registration with a date in the past or future is not possible.
- You must bring original documents from abroad such as birth or marriage certificates, a valid travel document for each person and a tenancy or purchase agreement, or the written consent of the main tenant together with a copy of their ID.
- Documents in languages other than English, German or French must be translated into Dutch by a sworn translator. They must not be older than three years.
- Non-EU citizens first contact the IND (immigration service) about a residence permit.
If someone moves to Breda from another Dutch municipality, they report the new address online with DigiD. This is possible from four weeks before the move until five days after it at the latest; if you report within this period, the moving date becomes your address date. Personal visits to the municipality are by appointment only.
Plan the journey from Berlin with our long-distance moving guide for Breda and read the customs notes in the guide to customs and formalities when moving to the Netherlands.
Daily Life in Breda: Waste Containers, Parking Permit, GP and Internationals
The Gemeente Breda has its own page for new residents with practical tips. The most important points for the first weeks:
- Waste: Breda separates waste, so there are several containers at each home. Containers and the Afvalpas stay with the property when you move. You use the pass for the underground residual waste container; if it is missing, a new one is free of charge up to six weeks after the move. Collection dates are shown in the Afvalservice app.
- Bulky waste: according to the city, grofvuil can be collected free of charge or taken to the milieustation (recycling centre) yourself.
- Parking: residents of the city centre and of areas with paid parking can apply for a parkeervergunning. Visitors park at a low rate via the bezoekersregeling (visitor scheme). Bicycle parking in the city centre is free.
- Dogs: according to the city, there is no dog tax in Breda.
- GP: you can usually choose and change your GP yourself. The city suggests kieseenhuisarts.nl as a search aid, and your health insurer can also help.
According to the Gemeente, every district and village has a wijkteam, often also a wijk- or dorpsraad and a buurthuis. For newcomers from abroad there is also the Breda Internationals contact point. An overview of your moving costs and the districts can be found in the guide Moving to Breda.
