New on the Meuse and Ourthe: How to Settle In to Liège
The first few weeks
Liège (Lüttich in German) lies at the confluence of the Ourthe and the Meuse, around 25 km south of Maastricht and 39 km south-west of Aachen. The Liège basin with its suburbs has about 600,000 inhabitants and was a centre of Belgian heavy industry from the 19th century; today the university, culture and logistics shape the city. The official language is French. This guide sorts out your first weeks: residence registration, the visit from the agent de quartier, districts, tram, parking and health insurance. We handle the transport as a home removal.
We have no branch in Belgium: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Liège and back. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), with additional insurance on request. The route via Aachen is described in our long-distance moving guide for Liège; you can find other destinations under long-distance moves.

Before Moving Day in Liège
Parking, stairwell, date
We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Liège. Before moving day we clarify with you where the vehicle can stand in front of the new address and whether a permit is needed for this – the city's Bureau de Police administrative answers questions about parking –, how narrow the stairwell and front door are in the old building, and whether a furniture lift would help. We set the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. You take care of the residence registration yourself – we schedule the move-in so that the eight-day deadline is easy to meet.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Liège
Outremeuse, Guillemins, Sart-Tilman: Where to Live?
Outremeuse (beyond the Meuse) was originally a lower-middle-class district with many craft businesses; Georges Simenon grew up here, and every August the city celebrates its town festival there. In the south lies Guillemins with the station designed by Santiago Calatrava, and Cointe is in the same district group. The university campus is on the Sart-Tilman plateau.
The city groups its districts into four district groups, for example Outremeuse with Longdoz and Saint-Léonard, or Sart-Tilman with Angleur, Grivegnée and Chênée. We deliberately do not give reliable rent figures – compare offers, pay attention to the rental deposit and service charges, and check your route by tram, bus or train.
Studying, Working and Going Out in Liège
Besides the University of Liège with the Sart-Tilman campus, there are other higher education institutions; nightlife is concentrated in the area between Rue Pont d’Avroy and Boulevard de la Sauvenière. Liège Airport in Bierset is important for distributing goods to Belgium, Germany, northern France and the Netherlands; in addition there are industry, retail and services.
Culturally, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, the La Boverie museum and the Grand Curtius offer a great deal; every Sunday the La Batte market stretches for kilometres along the left bank of the Meuse. From Guillemins station, high-speed trains run to Cologne, Frankfurt, Brussels and Paris, among other places, and since 2025 a tram has connected the city from Sclessin to Coronmeuse. We set the moving date to match the handover of your flat.
Moving prices by flat size
As an initial guide: a move from a 1-room flat costs from €369, and from a 2-room flat from €599. For a 3-room flat prices start at €884, and for a 4-room flat at €1,299. For houses and villas there is no flat rate but an individual quote. For long-distance moves we charge €4.15 per kilometre. You can plan most precisely with a free survey.
What Determines the Price for Liège
The price of your move depends on several factors: the volume of your household, the distance (from €4.15 per kilometre), the floor and whether there is a lift. A required parking restriction zone also affects the costs. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a shared load can change the price individually.

Registering Your Residence in Liège: Deadline, Fee and District Officer
If you move your main residence to Liège, according to the city of Liège you report this within eight working days of actually moving in. The obligation continues even after the deadline has passed. The declaration (déclaration de changement de domicile) can be made online via the city's E-Guichet or in person at a mairie de quartier. The city quotes a fee of €15.60 per application, which applies to each family under one roof.
The administration then sends a district officer (agent de quartier) of the local police, who checks the address and household composition. About three weeks after this visit, you have the chip of your identity card updated at a mairie de quartier. If the card was issued before 1 January 2022, have your PIN and PUK ready.
- You can reach the city switchboard on +32 4 221 81 11, Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 12.30 and 13.30 to 16.30.
- If you leave Liège again, you report the move to the new municipality.
- If you were struck off ex officio and later re-registered, the old card is invalid and a new one is needed.
For health insurance, the RIZIV/INAMI directory names, among others, Mutualité chrétienne, Solidaris Wallonie and Mutualité Libérale Liège-Luxembourg. The route from Germany is explained in our long-distance moving guide for Liège, and costs and districts in the Liège guide.
Districts and Transport in Liège: Outremeuse, Sart-Tilman and the Tram
The city of Liège organises its district teams (équipes de quartier) into four groups. Outremeuse includes Longdoz, Vennes, Amercœur, Saint-Léonard, Thier-à-Liège and Coronmeuse. Sart-Tilman is in a group with Angleur, Kinkempois, Grivegnée and Chênée, and Guillemins with Laveu, Sclessin, Fragnée, Cointe and other districts. The groups show how the city brings its districts together; which location suits you depends on your route to work or university and the type of housing.
Since June 2025 Liège's first tram has been running. According to the city, the line has 23 stops over 11.7 kilometres, serves the city centre, Guillemins, Coronmeuse and the Boverie, among others, and comes with two park-and-ride facilities (Sclessin and Bressoux). Since 2026 bus line B2 has connected Guillemins station with the Sart-Tilman plateau. Timetables are available from TEC (letec.be). According to the city, Guillemins is the busiest station in Wallonia, with direct connections to Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt, among others.
- Resident card (carte riverain): it is digital and applies to people with their main residence on a public street in Liège; up to three household members can hold one. It is applied for via e-guichet.liege.be or with a paper form at the mairie de quartier.
- Questions about parking: you can reach the Bureau de Police administrative on +32 4 221 81 80 or at [email protected].
