Liège guide
Moving to Liège: the Meuse valley, the university and the city quarters
Guide
A move to Liège (Lüttich) takes you to the second-largest city in Wallonia: around 196,000 people live where the Ourthe flows into the Meuse, 25 km south of Maastricht and 39 km south-west of Aachen. The city lies in the narrow Meuse valley; many quarters are densely built-up and some are on slopes. That is why we clarify access, floor and parking space before moving day. For your home move we plan everything from Berlin.
Whether a flat in Outremeuse, a house in Cointe or a room for studying at the University of Liège: we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 686 km via Aachen. Because Belgium is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for household goods. We give you the fixed price after the survey; details on long distances can be found under Long-distance moves and under Locations.

Your quote for Liège – after a survey
See first, then calculate
How much your move to Liège costs depends on volume, floor, access and the route of around 686 km. We look at your household goods – at your home in Berlin or by video – and then give you a written fixed price, whether your destination is in Outremeuse or in Cointe.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Our part in your move to Liège
From Moabit to Liège
We have no branch in Liège; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether a flat in Outremeuse or a house in Cointe. In Liège you clarify the parking space for the removal van with the Bureau de Police administrative (B.P.A.); we agree the date, duration and vehicle length with you. We are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. You will find places with their own pages under Locations.

Your
move, our craft
This guide gives you an overview of the quarters of Liège – from Centre and Outremeuse to Cointe and Guillemins – and of what counts when moving: access in the narrow Meuse valley, parking space via the Bureau de Police administrative, registering your residence within eight working days and the roughly 686 km from Berlin. It also covers the university, the station and the port as background for anyone newly moving to the Meuse.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Liège
The quarters of Liège at a glance
Because of its location in the narrow Meuse valley and the spoil heaps of former coal mining, Liège has developed many quarters with their own character, including Centre, Guillemins, Laveu, Longdoz, Sainte-Marguerite, Sainte-Walburge, Saint-Laurent and Amercœur. Outremeuse ("beyond the Meuse") was originally a modest artisans' quarter; every August it celebrates its local festival.
Cointe lies in the south-west on the heights south-west of Liège-Guillemins station and is characterised by villas from around 1900. The centre of nightlife lies around the Rue Pont d'Avroy. The E25 runs through Cointe in the 1,639-metre Tunnel de Cointe, completed in 2000. If you move to one of the hillside quarters, pay attention to gradients, stairs and turning space during the survey. For the move, the slope, street width and stairwell count – our home move service adapts to them.
University, port and station: who moves to Liège
The French-speaking University of Liège was founded in 1817; there are also other higher education institutions such as the Haute École de la Province de Liège. The port on the Meuse and the Albert Canal is one of the largest inland ports in Europe, and Liège-Guillemins station by Santiago Calatrava connects the city with high-speed trains. We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on the quarter and condition.
The Liège basin, including the suburbs, has around 600,000 inhabitants. On Sundays the Marché de la Batte stretches along the left bank of the Meuse. The official language is French, and this also applies to formalities with the city. If you are coming for the start of semester, fix the moving date early so that registering your residence fits within the eight-working-day deadline. After registration, according to the city, a neighbourhood officer from the local police checks the address; the chip in your identity card is then updated. So keep IDs and the tenancy agreement to hand and not in the removal van.

More destinations, one start: Berlin

Liège: sorting out parking and a parking ban for moving day
If you arrive in Liège (Lüttich) with a removal van, you should arrange the parking space with the city before moving day. According to the City of Liège, the Bureau de Police administrative (B.P.A.) is responsible for parking on the public road. Among other things, it handles paid parking and residents' parking. The address is Potiérue 5 (16th floor), 4000 Liège. According to its website, the office only accepts enquiries by phone on +32 4 221 81 80 or by email to [email protected], Monday to Friday from 9 am to 12 noon.
On the pages we checked, the city does not name a dedicated online form for parking spaces for moves. So ask the B.P.A. early whether a permit is needed for your street and how to apply for it. Have the following ready:
- Address and house number of the loading and unloading point
- Moving date and expected duration
- Length of the removal van and any furniture lift planned
We check how wide the access is and where the vehicle can stand during the survey, especially in the densely built-up streets of Outremeuse. The route from our base in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) is described in our long-distance move guide for Liège, and general tips on parking space are offered in the guide to the parking restriction zone.
After moving to Liège: registering with the city
If you move your main residence to Liège, according to the City of Liège you must report this within eight working days of actually moving in. The obligation does not end when this deadline expires; late or missing reports can have criminal consequences. The declaration (Déclaration de changement de domicile) can be made online via the city's E-Guichet or in person at a Mairie de quartier. For processing, the city charges a fee of 15.60 euros per application, which applies to each family living under one roof.
The administration then checks whether you actually live at the address given. To do so, it sends a neighbourhood officer from the local police, who checks the address and household composition. About three weeks after this visit, you have the chip in your identity card updated to the new address at a Mairie de quartier.
- Keep the IDs and tenancy agreement of all household members to hand – do not pack them in the removal van
- Note the moving-in day, as the eight-working-day deadline starts when you actually move in
- Put name plates on the doorbell and letterbox promptly
