Brandenburg an der Havel Guide
Arriving in the Havel City Between the Beetzsee and the Plauer See
The first few weeks
Brandenburg an der Havel has around 74,000 inhabitants and lies between the Havel, the Beetzsee and the roughly 640-hectare Plauer See; around three quarters of the city's area is farmland, marsh or water. The three medieval cores of Altstadt, Neustadt and Dom form the centre, with the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul on the cathedral island. In the 20th century, Görden, Nord and the prefab housing estate of Hohenstücken were added in the north. It has been a higher-education city since 1992 and a university city since 2014. Important for commuters: the city lies on the Berlin–Magdeburg railway line and the A2, and trams and buses connect the districts.
Brandenburg has been a higher-education city since 1992 and a university city since 2014, with the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences and the Brandenburg Medical School. Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to Brandenburg an der Havel
Eight Districts – Where Newcomers Live on the Havel
Brandenburg an der Havel is divided into eight urban districts and eight outlying localities. The medieval cores of the Altstadt, Neustadt and Dom form the centre, with period buildings, shops and short distances. In the 20th century, planned districts were built in the north: Görden in the 1920s, the Nord district from 1959 and the prefab housing estate of Hohenstücken from 1972.
Plaue and Kirchmöser lie by the water and are listed both as urban districts and as localities; there are also village localities such as Gollwitz or Wust. Plaue and Kirchmöser have their own local administration office at Unter den Platanen 2. We do not quote specific rents, because they depend heavily on location and condition – compare offers and, before you commit, also take a look at the stairwell, parking situation and surroundings. That will also make moving day easier later.
Work, Study and Leisure in the Havel City
After 1990, what remained of the former steel and rolling mill was an electric steelworks (Riva Group) and a gearbox plant; then there is ZF, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, railway technology in Kirchmöser and the university hospital. The Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences and the Brandenburg Medical School have made the city a university city since 2014. Many newcomers also work in Potsdam or Berlin and commute by train on the Berlin–Magdeburg line.
In your free time, the lakes and arms of the Havel, the cathedral island and the three historic town centres beckon. In 2015 the city was one of the venues of the Federal Garden Show, and many buildings have been renovated since then. Coming from Berlin, you will find more water and peace here – while still staying close to the capital. Sailing, paddling and cycling on the lakes are part of everyday life for many, and the distances to the old town are short. More on other destinations under long-distance moves.
How Much Does a Move to the Havel City Cost?
In a nutshell: one room costs from €339, two rooms from €579, three rooms from €879 and four rooms from €1,324. If you live in a house or villa, you always receive an individual quote after a survey.
