Long-distance move Berlin – Breda: route registration, duration

Destination: Breda
Your long-distance move to Breda – from Moabit to North Brabant
explained in brief
A move to Breda takes you across the border into the Netherlands, but not into the red tape of a non-EU country: Germany and the Netherlands are both in the EU, so there are no customs formalities for private household goods. What matters instead is registering with the Gemeente (municipality) within five days of arrival and access to the Centrum, where a pedestrian area and a low-emission zone apply. Under Long-distance moves you will find our other routes. We take care of planning, packing, transport and assembly.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 707 km via the A2, Venlo and the Dutch A67 to Breda; that is about eleven hours including breaks – so with two drivers or an overnight stop. We quote the fixed price after a survey, also for the route from Breda back to Berlin. Call us on 01625978461 – we will prepare a quote for your private move. Our part of your move to Breda
Planning from Berlin, arrival in the Netherlands
We have no branch in Breda; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an old town house on the Grote Markt, a flat in Ginneken or a house in Prinsenbeek. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address, following the City of Breda's rules. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with your registration at the municipality (gemeente).

For smaller volumes or single items, a shared load to Breda can be cheaper: your belongings share the loading space with other consignments on the same route. You will need some flexibility on the delivery day; we will tell you after your enquiry whether a trip towards Breda is coming up. It is also handy if a few items need to follow after the main move.

Your
move, our craft
A long-distance move abroad involves more than transport: registering with the Gemeente by appointment, the BSN (citizen service number) for your bank and employer, health insurance and deregistration in Germany all have to fit together. Add to that packing for around 707 km and access to the Centrum with an exemption (ontheffing). There are no customs formalities for household goods within the EU; an inventory list still helps. That way your move to Breda runs in a structured way with no idle time.

Frequent questions
Customs and formalities on arrival in Breda
As Germany and the Netherlands are both EU member states, there are no customs formalities for private household goods at the border. An inventory list of your belongings is still useful, for example for insurance and for checking during unloading. If you are taking a car, find out in advance from the Dutch RDW (vehicle authority) about registration and deadlines.
Registering with the Gemeente Breda is important: you receive the citizen service number (BSN), which you need for a bank account, employment contract and health insurance. In Germany you deregister when moving abroad (§ 17 para. 2 BMG). Plan these steps in advance so that your private move runs without idle time.

Breda: registering within five days of arrival
Anyone moving to Breda from Germany for the first time, or expecting to live there for at least four of the next six months, must, according to the Gemeente Breda, register in person within five days of arrival. Visits are by appointment only; you book online via the city's appointment system and, as an EU citizen, choose the EU option. The day of the appointment becomes your registration date, and you must be living in Breda on that day; a date in the past or future is not possible.
For each person the municipality lists the following documents:
- a valid travel document,
- original foreign certificates for yourself and your children, such as birth, marriage or divorce certificates, no more than three years old,
- proof of your home: a tenancy or purchase agreement, or the written permission of the main occupant together with a copy of their ID.
If documents are written in neither English, German nor French, the city requires a certified translation into Dutch. Depending on the issuing country, legalisation rules may apply. Nationals of non-EU countries first report to the immigration service IND. Without registration, according to the municipality, there is no entitlement to social benefits such as support or health insurance. Anyone staying less than four months applies for the BSN via the register for non-residents (Registratie Niet-ingezetenen). You will find more information about the city in the Breda moving guide.
Breda: exemption for removal vans and the pedestrian area
Driving or parking a lorry where it is prohibited requires an exemption under the Dutch traffic regulations (RVV) in Breda. The Gemeente expressly names “bij een verhuizing”, i.e. a move, as a case in which it is granted. There is a day exemption, a temporary one of up to three months and a long-term one of up to a year. According to the city, the day exemption costs €26.90 and the temporary one €64.10. The municipality decides on day and temporary applications within ten working days; the exemption only applies once it has been paid for and collected at the Stadskantoor. So allow enough lead time.
The city centre is largely a pedestrian area. According to the municipality, it is open to everyone on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7.00 to 11.00 and from 17.00 to 19.00, and on Thursdays from 7.00 to 11.00. Outside these times you need an exemption via the P-Loket; the day exemption there costs €26.14. If you want to park in the pedestrian area, you also need the RVV exemption. Cameras enforce the rules, and it is especially busy on Tuesday and Friday mornings, Saturdays and on public holidays and event days.
The low-emission zone inside the Singels applies to diesel lorries of emission classes 0 to 5; Breda will introduce a zero-emission zone from 1 January 2029. How we secure the space outside the door in Berlin is explained under Parking restriction zone; everyday life after moving in is described in Living in Breda.
