Arriving in Enschede: Twente's Largest City
Life on the Border
Enschede lies in Twente in the east of the province of Overijssel, right on the border with Gronau; with 162,671 inhabitants (early 2026) it is a major city. Once the most important textile town in the Netherlands, it has become a university city with the University of Twente and Saxion. Together with Hengelo, Borne and Gronau, Enschede forms a conurbation of almost 400,000 people. This guide shows what newcomers from Germany take care of in the first weeks: registration, flat hunting and getting around the city.
We have no branch in the Netherlands; we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). It is around 509 km to Enschede via the A2, A30 and the Dutch A1/A35, about seven and a half hours by lorry including a break. There is no customs within the EU. How we plan cross-border moves is described under International move. After a survey or a video call, we give you a fixed price.

Fixed-Price Quote for Enschede

For your move to Enschede, we look at your household goods, floor and access – on site in Berlin or by video call – and then give you a fixed price. Parking space, assembly and storage are listed as separate items in the quote. We accept liability for damage under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. Call us on 01625978461 – ideally as soon as your tenancy agreement and registration appointment are fixed.

Our planning for your move-in
Planning from Berlin, Arrival in Twente
We drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit to Enschede, so we clarify beforehand what matters on arrival day: the steep staircase in a Dutch terraced house, the loading zone outside a building in the city centre, the route to a student room near the campus. Where the removal van is not allowed to stop, we ask the Gemeente (municipality) for an exemption. For your belongings we accept liability under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of load space. There is no customs between Germany and the Netherlands; you take care of registration with the Gemeente yourself – within five days of arrival.

How We Plan the Route to Twente
We pack pianos, pictures or antiques separately and secure them in the load space. The fixed price for your move to Enschede is based on volume, floor, carrying distances and the roughly 509 km from Berlin; furniture lift and assembly are listed individually in the quote.

Small Moves to Enschede
If you are moving to study at the University of Twente or at Saxion and are only furnishing one room, you can save with a shared load: your things travel together with other consignments towards the Netherlands. For this you need some flexibility on the delivery day. No customs papers are needed.

After
unpacking
Anyone moving to Enschede for more than four months registers in person with the Gemeente – within five days of arrival, and so do all family members moving with them. According to the Gemeente, the online form only applies to moves within the Netherlands; from abroad, you arrange an appointment by phone. When you are entered in the BRP (personal records database), you receive your citizen service number (BSN), which employers, banks and health insurers ask for. Students are best advised to look for a room months in advance. What the Gemeente and the university say about this is set out in the sections below.

Questions About a Fresh Start in Enschede
Five Stadsdelen from Centrum to West
The municipality of Enschede is divided into five stadsdelen (city districts). Centrum covers the Binnenstad with the Oude Markt and surrounding wijken (neighbourhoods) such as Laares and Lasonder. Noord includes Lonneker, Deppenbroek, Mekkelholt, Twekkelerveld and Roombeek, which was rebuilt after the fireworks disaster of 13 May 2000 that killed 23 people. Oost stretches from Velve-Lindenhof and De Eschmarke to Glanerbrug on the border.
The stadsdeel Zuid contains Wesselerbrink, Helmerhoek and Stroinkslanden. West covers Boswinkel, Pathmos, Stadsveld and the villages of Boekelo, Usselo and Twekkelo. The old textile workers' estate of Pathmos lies low; during the heavy rain in July 2024 the sewers overflowed there – ask about this when looking for a flat. The University of Twente has its campus on the former Drienerlo estate in the west of the city, with its own stop, Enschede Kennispark, by the De Grolsch Veste stadium.
Work, Study, Weekends
After the end of the textile industry in the 1960s, Enschede reinvented itself. The Grolsch brewery, tyre manufacturer Vredestein and Polaroid B.V. are based here, along with IT firms and an Equinix data centre. The largest educational institutions are the technically oriented University of Twente and the university of applied sciences Saxion. For commuting there are Intercity trains to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, as well as the regional train via Gronau to Münster.
In your free time there is the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, the Museumfabriek in Roombeek, the Muziekkwartier and the pubs around the Oude Markt; FC Twente plays at De Grolsch Veste. For students, the university names platforms such as Roomspot, Kamernet and Pararius. We do not give specific rents without a reliable source.

What makes a move cheaper or more expensive?
The deciding factors are the volume of your household and the distance, which we charge at €4.10/km. The floor and whether a lift can be used also count. A parking restriction zone and booked services such as furniture assembly or a shared load also play a role.

From Berlin to Twente – and Back
We plan moves from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit, to Enschede as well as back. How the roughly 509 km work is described in our long-distance moving guide for Enschede.
Registering in Enschede: Appointment, Documents and Students
According to the Gemeente Enschede, anyone moving from Germany to Enschede for more than four months must register in person, as must family members moving with them. The municipality's online form only applies to moves within the Netherlands. If you are arriving from abroad, arrange an appointment by phone: on 14 053, or from abroad on +31 (0)53 481 81 81. According to the municipality, reporting your move is free of charge. It is best to call before the move so that the appointment fits in with your moving-in date.
Bring to the appointment:
- a valid ID
- the original rental or purchase contract for your new home
- if you live with someone: written permission from the main occupant together with a copy of their ID
- depending on your case, civil status documents such as birth, marriage or divorce certificates, which sometimes need to be legalised
Anyone not from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland also needs a residence permit. Students follow a separate procedure, which the municipality describes on its “Student registration” page. The German and English pages of the municipality differ slightly on the documents, so confirm the list before your appointment. More on planning can be found in our guide to moving to Enschede.
Living in Enschede: Roombeek and Room Hunting for the University of Twente
Roombeek was rebuilt after the fireworks disaster in 2000. In December 2000, the state, the province of Overijssel and the Gemeente Enschede agreed on the reconstruction of Roombeek-West. According to the municipality, most of the neighbourhood has since been rebuilt. The Roombekerveld area was planned as a special place to live and work, with houses around a courtyard that also offers workspace.
If you are coming to the University of Twente as a student, you should start looking for a room early. The university recommends starting at least three months before arrival and names Roomspot, Kamernet and Pararius as platforms. For the September semester, registration with Roomspot for a guaranteed room offer closes on 31 July; such an offer only applies to certain groups, for example non-EEA students coming to the UT for the first time who do not yet live in the Netherlands.
The university also lists warning signs in rental offers: landlords abroad who ask for a deposit to a foreign account, demands before a viewing, conspicuously low prices or an address at which you cannot register with the municipality. If in doubt, sign nothing and ask the Tenants' Helpdesk of the Gemeente Enschede. For student moves we offer our student move.
