Moving to Enschede: costs process and districts

Enschede at a glance
Moving to Enschede – your fresh start in Twente
Planning and costs
Enschede is the largest city in the Twente region and lies right on the German border near Gronau. The former textile town is now shaped by the University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences and many technology firms in the Kennispark. Anyone moving here from Germany has short distances to Münster and the Münsterland and will find very different districts – from Roombeek, rebuilt after the fireworks disaster of 2000, to Glanerbrug on the border. For your move, what counts is access, stairs and registering with the municipality (Gemeente).
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 509 km on the A2 and A30 to Bad Bentheim and then on the Dutch A1 to Enschede; by lorry that takes about seven and a half hours including a break. Within the EU your household goods need no customs papers. In the city centre (Binnenstad) the pedestrian zone is closed to lorries, and access is governed by an exemption permit from the Gemeente – we clarify this in advance. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including the return trip to Berlin. More on this: Planning a move to the Netherlands.

Fixed price after a survey, liability under the HGB
A move to Enschede does not have to be complicated: we calculate the fixed price according to volume, distance and the service you want, so you know from the start what to expect. What we handle on your move to Enschede
From Berlin all the way to Twente
We have no branch in the Netherlands; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether a period building in the Binnenstad, a new build in Roombeek or a terraced house in Stadsveld. Dutch stairs are often steep and narrow; in that case we plan a furniture lift. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuable items.

Services that fit
When moving to Enschede, it pays to take a realistic look at the housing market: compared with Amsterdam or Utrecht, housing is cheaper here, but students and cross-border commuters create demand. We do not quote specific rents because they change quickly – current listings are shown on portals such as Pararius or Kamernet.

Moving
service without compromise
Many factors play a role when moving to Enschede: the right district, the situation on the rental market and registering with the Gemeente within five days. If you are coming for the University of Twente or Saxion, you will often look in Boswinkel or Roombeek. The links via the A1 and A35 and access to the Binnenstad with its zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone) also matter for moving day. We plan the drive from Berlin, assembly and the permit for the city centre.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Enschede
Enschede's districts at a glance
Enschede is divided into districts, each with its own distinct character. The Centrum scores with historic buildings, shopping streets and short distances to cafés and culture, but is correspondingly more expensive. Roombeek, completely rebuilt after the disaster of 2000, is now regarded as a creative showcase neighbourhood with modern architecture, art studios and plenty of greenery. If you prefer somewhere quieter, Stadsveld or Twekkelerveld offer family-friendly residential areas near the University of Twente with good access to green spaces such as the Volkspark.
For students and young professionals, Boswinkel and Pathmos are popular, as they offer affordable housing within cycling distance of the city centre. The district of Glanerbrug lies right on the German border and is particularly suitable for commuters to Gronau or Ahaus. In Eschmarke, new housing projects are currently being built for families looking for modern new builds with good infrastructure. Whichever district – we bring your household goods safely to their new destination.
Job market, universities and quality of life in Enschede
Enschede is shaped by the University of Twente, one of the leading technical universities in the Netherlands, and Saxion University of Applied Sciences, which together attract thousands of students and professionals to the city every year. Large employers such as Grolsch and numerous tech start-ups in the Kennispark benefit from the proximity to research and create attractive jobs in the Twente region. The combination of an innovation hub and affordable housing makes Enschede particularly interesting for young professionals and families who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the Randstad.
Quality of life in Enschede is characterised by plenty of greenery, short distances and a relaxed atmosphere. Parks such as Van Heek Park and the Volkspark invite you to unwind, while the cultural offering, with museums such as De Museumfabriek (called TwentseWelle until 2018) and regular events, leaves nothing to be desired. Thanks to the proximity of Germany, residents also benefit from cheaper shopping and a genuine cross-border everyday culture.

Access to Enschede's city centre: loading times and the ontheffing
According to the Gemeente Enschede, the pedestrian zone in Enschede's city centre (Binnenstad) is in principle closed to cars and lorries. For a move into or out of the city centre, you should therefore clarify access early. The municipality lists these rules:
- Cars and lorries may enter and leave the city centre between 7.00 and 11.00 a.m. without a permit for loading and unloading.
- Outside these times an ontheffing (exemption permit) is required. It applies only to driving and loading, not to parking.
- The Binnenstad is a zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone). Depending on the vehicle, an additional permit from the RDW may be needed; the municipality refers to a number plate check.
- A camera reads the number plate. According to the municipality, driving in without an ontheffing can result in a fine.
According to the municipality, a daily ontheffing for one vehicle costs 17.25 euros and is valid for 30 hours. The online application requires DigiD or eHerkenning, and processing of longer applications takes up to five working days. Parking is prohibited in the Binnenstad. For the combined permit, the municipality lists construction, demolition, maintenance and cleaning companies, holders of a disabled parking card and journalists. Removal companies do not appear there. That is why we clarify the stopping space with the municipality in advance ([email protected], phone 053 481 77 00). For the overall process, read our long-distance moving guide for Enschede.
Registering in Enschede: appointment, documents and registration deadline
According to the Gemeente Enschede, anyone moving from Germany to Enschede must register in person with the municipality. To do so, book an appointment on 14 053, from abroad on +31 53 481 81 81. Family members who are also being registered come to the appointment too. The Dutch government (Rijksoverheid) gives a deadline of five days after arrival in the Netherlands. Registration is free. According to the municipality, failing to register can result in a fine for incorrect personal data.
Always bring to the appointment:
- a valid ID (passport or identity card)
- the original tenancy or purchase agreement for your home
If you are moving in with someone, you also need the main occupant's consent form together with a copy of their ID. If you are staying longer than one year, the municipality also requires proof of your marital status, such as a birth or marriage certificate, which may need to be legalised.
Plan the appointment early, as you must attend in person. We coordinate our arrival in Enschede with your key handover so that you can go straight to the appointment after unpacking.
As for customs: German customs describes the procedure for duty-free household goods for moves from countries outside the EU. If in doubt about your household goods, contact customs; we advise you on this during the survey. Further information on settling in can be found in the guide Living in Enschede.
