Enschede guide
Long-distance move to Enschede – route, Gemeente and process
Planning and costs
A move to Enschede takes you across the border to Twente, just beyond Gronau. Because the Netherlands and Germany are in the EU, your household goods need no customs papers. Other rules matter instead: within five days you register with the municipality (Gemeente) and receive your BSN, and your health insurance has to be switched to the Dutch system. We plan the route, packing, transport and furniture assembly and tell you which formalities you deal with yourself.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 509 km on the A2 and A30 to the border at Bad Bentheim and then on the Dutch A1 to Enschede. By lorry that takes about seven and a half hours including a break. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including the return trip to Berlin. More on this: Formalities when moving to the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions about a long-distance move to Enschede
Customs and formalities when moving to the Netherlands
As the Netherlands and Germany are both EU member states, a move to Enschede involves no conventional customs duties for private household goods. Even so, you need a list of your belongings and, if applicable, proof of your change of residence if you are bringing vehicles or valuables. You must register with the Dutch Gemeente within five days of arrival, and you receive your BSN number when you do.
It is also important to take out Dutch health insurance within four months of registering. If you bring a vehicle, it must be re-registered with the RDW. Our team will gladly help you put together all the necessary documents for a smooth long-distance move.

Berlin – Enschede: the Dutch lorry charge and the route through the Netherlands
On a long-distance move from our base in Berlin-Moabit to Enschede, the removal lorry drives the final stage through the Netherlands. There, the "vrachtwagenheffing" (lorry charge) applies to heavy goods vehicles. According to vrachtwagenheffing.nl, keepers of vehicles in categories N2 and N3 must pay if the technically permissible maximum mass exceeds 3,500 kg. The charge applies to Dutch and foreign vehicles, regardless of purpose and load.
- According to the site, transport companies need a contract with a service provider and a toll device (tolkastje or OBU) to pay.
- It is charged per kilometre driven; the tariff page lists weight and CO2 and Euro emission class as factors.
- Almost all motorways and some provincial and municipal roads are covered.
For you this is mainly a planning question: whether the charge applies and how much it is depends on the vehicle used, which is why we state the destination country and destination address precisely in the quote. Our dispatchers set the exact route on the day of departure according to traffic and roadworks. What remains important is that access in Enschede is clear and the vehicle can get close to the front door.
How to organise papers and dates for destination countries outside Germany is explained in our guide Long-distance move to the Netherlands. For the city itself, it is worth looking at Moving to Enschede: costs and districts.
Enschede: bulky waste, Afvalbrengpunt and collection by Twente Milieu
Before moving in, it is worth getting rid of surplus furniture locally. For Enschede, Twente Milieu describes four ways of disposing of bulky waste (grof afval) on twentemilieu.nl: charity second-hand shops (kringloop) for usable furniture and working electrical appliances, the waste drop-off point (afvalbrengpunt), collection from home and a scrap dealer for metal, such as an iron bed.
The site lists three afvalbrengpunten:
- Enschede Oost: Lenteweg 44
- Enschede West: Binnenhaven 152 (closed on Mondays)
- Enschede Zuid: Vlierstraat 105 (Monday to Friday 8.00 a.m.–4.30 p.m., Saturdays 9.00 a.m.–3.30 p.m.)
To drop off waste you need a Milieupas. According to Twente Milieu, it lets you bring 75 kilos of bulky waste free of charge. Without a pass there is one-off access for a 5.00-euro starting fee plus 1.50 euros per 10 kilos.
You book collection from home by appointment in "Mijn Twente Milieu". A maximum of 300 kilos may be put out per appointment. In addition to the per-kilo prices (0.15 euros per kilo after 75 free kilos), there is a 20.00-euro call-out charge (voorrijkosten); electrical appliances are free. Twente Milieu's customer service answers questions on 0900 - 85 20 111 (Monday to Friday 8.00 a.m.–5.00 p.m.). If you need to clear out an entire flat, see our house clearance service. Information about living locally is provided in our guide for newcomers to Enschede.
