Moving to the Netherlands: Process & Tips

From Berlin to the Netherlands
Moving to the Netherlands: route, tolls and furniture lift
Via Bad Bentheim to Holland
A long-distance move to the Netherlands above all needs good transport planning: by road it is around 657 km from Berlin to Amsterdam via the A2, the A30 and, after the border at Bad Bentheim, the Dutch A1. On request, our team at Beste Umzug Unternehmen handles your private move from the survey to unloading in your new home. Within the EU there are no customs formalities for your household goods; what needs clarifying is the date, parking at the destination and access to the flat. What is included in the price is stated in the quote.
During your move to Holland we are liable for your belongings under the rules of the German Commercial Code (HGB); it is best to take valuables with you yourself. On request, our team packs, transports and assembles your furniture so that everything arrives intact. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); places with their own pages can be found under Locations, routes under Long-distance moves. That way you start well prepared in your new country.

What we clarify before the journey
Route, parking, access
With a move to the Netherlands there are no customs, but other questions come up instead: where may the lorry park in front of the house? Will the sofa and wardrobe fit through the narrow stairwell? How long is the journey including breaks? We clarify these points with you before you book, as well as the fixed price and what it includes. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB, limited to €620 per cubic metre; for expensive individual items, additional insurance is available on request.

How we support you
With a move within the EU no customs duty is charged on your household goods, and there is no clearance at the border. An inventory list is still worthwhile: it helps with estimating the volume for the quote, loading in the right order and checking everything after unloading.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to the Netherlands has two sides: the formalities – registering with the gemeente, the BSN number, health insurance – and the transport itself. The formalities are explained in our checklist for emigrating to the Netherlands. Here it is about moving day: route and tolls, parking in front of the new house, narrow stairs and furniture lift. We accompany you through these steps and plan the transport so that it fits your moving-in date.

Frequently asked questions about moving to the Netherlands
No customs, but tolls: the route to the Netherlands
As the Netherlands is a member of the European Union, there is no customs clearance and no import duty on your household goods when moving from Germany. The removal lorry drives from Berlin along the A2 to Bad Oeynhausen, on the A30 past Osnabrück to the border at Bad Bentheim and on along the Dutch A1; it is around 657 km to Amsterdam. Lorries over 3.5 t pay tolls in Germany, and since 1 July 2026 the Netherlands has also charged a distance-based lorry toll (vrachtwagenheffing).
At around 657 km, the pure driving time of a lorry is close to the limit of 9 hours of driving a day; with loading in Berlin, the move is therefore often planned with an overnight stop or a second driver. You only register with the gemeente after arrival – what you need for this is in our emigration checklist.
Costs and process of a move to the Netherlands
The costs of a long-distance move to the Netherlands depend on distance, moving volume and additional services such as packing, a furniture lift or assembly. After the survey you receive a fixed price that lists these items. We do not quote a flat rate for a typical 3-room household, because the route and access at the destination vary too much.
The process begins with a survey or video consultation, followed by the quote. On moving day we take care of packing, transport and, on request, dismantling and assembling your furniture at the destination. For your private move we plan the dates so that the transition to your new home in the Netherlands is as seamless as possible.

What affects the costs of your move?
The main cost drivers include the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged from €3.85/km. The floor and lift also have an effect – without a lift the effort rises considerably. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) can also be useful. In addition, we offer furniture assembly and a shared load.
