Moving to the Netherlands: costs & planning

From Berlin to the Netherlands
Route, stairs, volume: the costs of a move to Holland
And the right timeline
The costs of a move to the Netherlands arise in three places: on the route, at the front doors and in the volume. From Berlin-Moabit it is around 660 km by road to Amsterdam and just under 700 to The Hague, via the A2 and A30 to the border at Bad Bentheim. For a removal lorry, this journey is close to the daily driving time limit of nine hours; tolls apply to lorries over 3.5 tonnes in Germany and, since 1 July 2026, in the Netherlands too. There are no customs duties, however – both countries are in the EU.
At the front door, narrow, steep stairs in older houses decide whether a furniture lift is needed, and the parking rules of the municipality (gemeente) decide where the lorry may stop. We clarify both during planning. You determine the volume yourself: whatever you sell beforehand does not have to travel 660 km. How the driving day goes is described in the guide Long-distance move to the Netherlands; the official steps are listed under Formalities and process.

What goes into the fixed price
A fixed price for a move to the Netherlands is made up of working time for loading and unloading, driving time, tolls and additional services. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), carry out the survey in Berlin and then calculate a fixed price in which furniture lift, assembly and materials are listed separately. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for valuable items, additional insurance is worthwhile. You handle dealings with the Dutch authorities yourself – which ones these are is described in the guide to the formalities.

Timeline: from giving notice to the gemeente
Besides the costs, the timeline decides whether a move to the Netherlands goes smoothly. These six steps, in this order, have proved their worth – from finding a flat to registering at the new place.
Flat first
Three months' notice

Reduce the volume
Deregister in Berlin
Register in the Netherlands
Few belongings to Holland
With a shared load, your goods travel on a lorry that is heading towards the Netherlands anyway. For a room in a shared flat, individual pieces of furniture or a small household, this is often cheaper than a trip of your own; in return there is a time window instead of a fixed delivery day.

Costs,
timeline, authorities
A move abroad to the Netherlands can be divided into three building blocks: the price, which arises from route, access and volume; the timeline between giving notice in Berlin and the start of the Dutch tenancy; and the authorities on both sides. For life after the move – BSN, DigiD, health insurance, car – the checklist for emigrating to the Netherlands is worthwhile. As for the costs: the more precisely volume and access are recorded during the survey, the more reliable the fixed price.

Authorities: deregister here, register there

Questions about costs and planning
No customs, but tolls, driving time and furniture lift
Because Germany and the Netherlands are both in the EU, no customs duty is payable on your household goods, and nothing is cleared through customs at the border at Bad Bentheim. The costs of a move therefore arise elsewhere: the roughly 660 km to Amsterdam are close to the daily driving time limit, lorries over 3.5 tonnes pay tolls in both countries, and many older houses have such steep stairs that furniture comes in through the window via a furniture lift.
Then there is the parking space: each gemeente decides for itself whether and how a removal van may park in front of the door. Ask the city about this before the date. Pets need a microchip, the EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination to enter.
How the fixed price is set
Flat-rate average prices say little about a move to the Netherlands, because volume and access vary greatly. We survey your flat in Berlin, have the stairwell and street at the new home shown to us and then give you a fixed price. It lists working time, transport and tolls as well as additional services such as packing, assembly, furniture lift or storage separately.
On moving day we dismantle in Berlin, load up and drive via the A2 and A30 to the Netherlands; depending on the destination, unloading takes place the same evening or the next morning. At the new home we reassemble the furniture. The starting prices per flat size are in the table below.

These criteria determine the price
The price depends primarily on volume and distance – the latter is charged from €3.80/km. Floor and lift also affect the effort. Additional services such as furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked.
