Lelystad for Newcomers: Registration BSN, Everyday Life

Lelystad for newcomers
New in the Polder City: How to Settle In to Lelystad
The first few weeks
Lelystad is the capital of the province of Flevoland and a young planned city: founded in 1967 and named after Cornelis Lely, the initiator of the Zuiderzee Works. The city stands on a polder that only fell dry in 1957 and today lies almost five metres below sea level; parts of the IJsselmeer and Markermeer belong to the municipal area. This guide sorts out the first weeks: registering in the BRP (Personal Records Database), the BSN, health insurance, DigiD and everyday life. We handle the transport as a home removal.
We have no branch in the Netherlands: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carry out moves to Lelystad and back. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration, and they are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). Route, lorry tolls and schedule are described in our long-distance moving guide to Lelystad. Where the vehicle can stop in front of the new address is something we clarify with you in advance, along with floor, carrying distance and delivery day.

Fixed price after a survey, no customs
Whether a flat in the centre or a terraced house in one of the newer neighbourhoods: after a survey or video survey we give you a fixed price for your move to Lelystad that includes floor, carrying distance and access – with no additional charges as long as the scope stays the same. Call us on 01625978461, and we will schedule the date to match the flat handover.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Before Moving Day in Lelystad
Access, lift, registration appointment
We come from Berlin and bring your household goods to Lelystad. Before moving day we clarify with you where the vehicle can stop in front of the new address, whether there is a lift in the block of flats and when the flat will be handed over. We set the price after the survey (fixed price), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. You arrange the registration appointment with the municipality yourself – we schedule the move-in so that you can attend it in the first week.

Shared Load to Lelystad
If you are moving to Lelystad with little furniture, you do not have to pay for a whole lorry. With a shared load you use free loading space on a trip towards the Netherlands; we agree the delivery day in advance, and your belongings are covered under the HGB here too. This is worthwhile, for example, for a furnished room or a first small flat.

Lelystad
for newcomers
New in Lelystad, many questions come up at once: how quickly must I register, and which family members have to come to the appointment? When does the BSN arrive, and from when do I need Dutch health insurance? How do I apply for DigiD, child benefit and a primary school place? We have summarised the information from the Rijksoverheid and the Municipality of Lelystad below. For the move itself we advise you on schedule, access and packing so that everything fits on moving-in day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Lelystad
A Planned City on the Polder: Where to Live in Lelystad on the Markermeer?
Lelystad was planned on the drawing board from 1967 onwards. The oldest part is Lelystad-Haven on the Markermeer, the former pioneer island with the workers' settlement for dyke construction. Around Lelystad Centrum station lies the centre with shops, and on the water around the Bataviahaven are Batavialand, the Ark museum and the Batavia Stad outlet. To the south-west, the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve borders the built-up area.
We deliberately do not quote reliable rent figures; compare offers, pay attention to the deposit and proof of income, and check the route to the station and work before you accept.
Working, Commuting and Leisure in Flevoland's Capital
Lelystad is the seat of government of the province of Flevoland and the region's main centre; many jobs are in administration, retail, healthcare and services. From Lelystad Centrum station, trains run via Almere to Amsterdam and Utrecht, and since 2012 via the Hanzelijn also to Zwolle. By car you reach the city via the A6 from Amsterdam via Almere, and the Houtribdijk leads across the water to Enkhuizen.
For leisure there is sailing on the Markermeer, cycle paths through the polder, the Aviodrome aviation museum at Lelystad Airport, Batavialand with the replica of the VOC ship Batavia, and the Oostvaardersplassen. We schedule the moving date to match the flat handover.
Moving prices by flat size
The calculation is based on flat size: 1 room from €359, 2 rooms from €579, 3 rooms from €879, 4 rooms from €1,329. For houses or villas the calculation is individual. For long-distance moves a rate of €4.25/km applies. Your quote is most accurate after a free survey.
Five Factors for the Price to Lelystad
1. Volume of your household, 2. distance (from €4.25/km), 3. floor, 4. whether there is a lift and 5. the need for a parking restriction zone. In addition, furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked.

Registering in Lelystad: BRP Registration with the Municipality
If you move to Lelystad and stay longer than four months, you must register with the municipality in the Netherlands. The Rijksoverheid sets a clear deadline for this: no later than five days after arrival, with an appointment arranged in advance. If you stay less than four months, you cannot register with the municipality, but you can be recorded in the Personal Records Database (BRP) as a non-resident.
According to the page on the Municipality of Lelystad on the Dutch government portal (as of 1 April 2026), first registration works as follows:
- All family members being registered must come to the appointment in person, including babies and older people.
- A valid ID is required for each person; a driving licence is not enough.
- In addition, a tenancy or purchase agreement or the permission of the main occupant or owner is required.
- If you were born, married or divorced abroad, you may need original certificates that must be legalised or translated.
Registration is free of charge; you pay for translations or legalisations yourself. You are entered in the BRP at the appointment and receive a confirmation, and the citizen service number (BSN) arrives by post within three weeks. Contact the municipality on +31 320 279320 or by email at [email protected]. Plan your arrival so that you can attend the appointment in the first week. How the move itself works is explained in our Lelystad moving guide.
Everyday Life in Lelystad: BSN, Health Insurance and the First Weeks
After registration in Lelystad come the mandatory Dutch steps beyond reporting your address. The Rijksoverheid summarises them for newcomers. Health insurance is particularly important: you must take out basic health insurance (basisverzekering), which covers the GP and hospital, among other things. According to the Rijksoverheid, if you work in the Netherlands you must in any case take out insurance within four months; if you only live there, you register with the municipality, and the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) determines whether you are insured.
- BSN: you receive the number on registration; authorities, healthcare and tax all work with it.
- DigiD: with this digital identity you deal with the authorities online; you apply for it via digid.nl.
- GP: registering is not compulsory but is recommended.
- Taxes and allowances: as a resident you pay taxes, and the tax authority sends you a letter about the tax return. Depending on income, allowances (toeslagen) may be available.
- Children: primary school for children aged 4 to 12, secondary school from 12; you apply for child benefit (kinderbijslag) from the SVB after registering.
If you later move within the Netherlands, according to the Municipality of Lelystad you report it free of charge online with DigiD via the iBurgerzaken portal; processing takes up to four weeks. Clarify questions about parking permits or waste directly with the municipality. A checklist for the move to the Netherlands is in our article on moving to the Netherlands; long-distance planning from Berlin is in our long-distance moving guide to Lelystad.
