Moving to Lelystad: Stadshart, Haven and neighbourhoods
Living in Flevoland
Lelystad is the capital of the province of Flevoland and a young town: founded in 1967, named after Cornelis Lely, built on a polder that fell dry in 1957 – almost five metres below sea level. Its oldest part is Lelystad-Haven, and the centre is the Stadshart with the station and a pedestrian zone. Around it lie neighbourhoods such as Boswijk, Waterwijk, Zuiderzeewijk and Atolwijk. For your home move we clarify access and delivery times in advance – in the Stadshart, deliveries are only allowed at set times.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 618 km via Bad Bentheim and Zwolle to Lelystad, about nine hours by lorry including a break. Within the EU there is no customs duty on your household goods. Anyone staying longer than four months registers in the BRP (personal records database) with the municipality (Gemeente) within five days of arrival. We give you the fixed price after a survey. More on the route in the long-distance moving guide for Lelystad. If the new flat is not yet free, we store your belongings temporarily in Berlin and deliver on the agreed date.

What we handle on a move to Lelystad
From Berlin into the polder
We have no branch in the Netherlands; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify in advance how the vehicle reaches your address – in the Stadshart with its pedestrian zone and delivery times, in the residential neighbourhoods with parking spaces by the house. We pack, carry, transport and assemble; registration with the Gemeente is up to you. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. We plan the way back to Berlin in the same way. Additional services such as assembly, packing or storage are listed individually.

Your
move, our craft
This guide shows how Lelystad is laid out, what applies to the removal van in the Stadshart pedestrian zone and how registration in the personal records database works. The information comes from the Gemeente Lelystad and Rijksoverheid.nl. We do not give rents because they depend heavily on location and condition. How the journey from Berlin works is covered in the long-distance moving guide. Dates at the end of the month are in demand, so an early enquiry pays off. Frequently asked questions about moving to Lelystad
Stadshart, Haven and the neighbourhoods of Lelystad
The Stadshart forms the centre with Lelystad Centrum station, the town hall and shopping streets; it is a pedestrian zone where delivery traffic may only drive at set times. The oldest part of the town is Lelystad-Haven, the former workers' settlement on the Pioneer Island. Since 1967, neighbourhoods such as Boswijk, Waterwijk, Zuiderzeewijk, Warande and Atolwijk have grown up around the centre. The municipal area also includes parts of the IJsselmeer and the Markermeer. For the move, the areas differ mainly in access and parking: delivery times apply in the Stadshart, while the residential neighbourhoods usually have space by the house. Which area suits you depends on your commute, school and budget.
Housing market, work and everyday life in Lelystad
We do not give specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition; people usually search via Dutch portals and estate agents. As the provincial capital, Lelystad is the seat of Flevoland's administration; there is also trade, logistics and Lelystad Airport with the Aviodrome aviation museum. Originally planned as the centre for all the southern polders, Lelystad is now somewhat off the beaten track – Almere has grown faster. Only sign the tenancy agreement once the moving date can be planned; you need it for registration. It is best to plan giving notice in Berlin, the Gemeente appointment and the delivery time in the Stadshart backwards from moving-in day. You will find our guide prices by number of rooms on this page.

These factors determine your moving price
Besides the volume of your belongings, the distance to be covered plays a central role, which we calculate from €4.15/km. If there is no lift or the flat is on a high floor, the effort increases. A parking restriction zone that has been set up also ensures a smooth process, as do our furniture assembly and part load services.

Moving in Lelystad's Stadshart: pedestrian zone and exemption permit
Lelystad's Stadshart is a pedestrian zone in which delivery traffic may only drive at set times (venstertijden). Anyone carrying out a move there may therefore need an exemption permit (ontheffing). The municipality has published a policy rule (beleidsregel) on driving in the Stadshart pedestrian zone, which the platform for local regulations lists as still in force.
This means:
- A move within this area is named as a possible reason for an exemption.
- The municipality is very restrictive: an exemption outside the delivery times is only granted if it is proven beyond doubt that the delivery times cannot be used.
- The exemption covers the short stop for loading and unloading, not longer parking in the pedestrian zone.
- The application is made in writing and states name, address, date of birth, the vehicle details and the demonstrable necessity.
- The municipality decides within six weeks; the deadline can be extended by a maximum of four weeks.
If the exemption is granted, the permit must be clearly visible behind the windscreen, and it is not transferable. Apply for the permit as early as possible, ideally as soon as the moving date is fixed. Ask the municipality of Lelystad about the fee and current delivery times, as the policy rule contains older information on these.
We describe all cost factors for the route from Berlin in the article on the long-distance move to Lelystad.
Registering in Lelystad: entry in the BRP and moving from Germany
Anyone moving from Germany to Lelystad and staying longer than four months must register with the municipality in the personal records database (BRP). According to Rijksoverheid.nl, this takes place at your permanent residence, is free of charge and must be done within five days of arrival. Partners and children must come to the appointment. Afterwards you receive the citizen service number (BSN). If you stay less than four months, you can register as a non-resident. Anyone still waiting for a required residence permit does not have to meet the five-day deadline, according to Rijksoverheid.nl.
The Dutch government portal lists further steps:
- make an appointment with the municipality
- take out health insurance with a Dutch insurer, as this applies to everyone living in the Netherlands
- if needed, apply for a DigiD, the digital ID for dealings with the authorities
On customs: the German federal portal describes the customs declaration of household goods for moves from a non-EU country into the EU. Germany and the Netherlands are both EU members; nevertheless, check whether permits are needed for individual items such as weapons or protected animals.
You will find an overview of documents and deadlines in our checklist for moving to the Netherlands. Everyday topics for newcomers are covered in the guide Living in Lelystad.
