Moving to Dornbirn (Vorarlberg): Costs & Process

Dornbirn guide
Moving to Dornbirn: Vorarlberg's Largest City in the Rhine Valley
Guide
Dornbirn is Austria's tenth-largest city and the largest without its own charter – in the middle of the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley, near Lake Constance and Switzerland. The largest employer is the Zumtobel Group, headquartered in the city; Blum also runs a plant here. The Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences and Messe Dornbirn (the exhibition centre) attract students and skilled workers. For your private move, we clarify access, floor and the Meldezettel in advance.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), around 739 km via the A9, A7 and A96 into the Rhine Valley; by lorry, that is about eleven and a half hours including breaks. We quote the fixed price after the survey. The route in detail: Moving Berlin – Dornbirn.

Your move to Dornbirn: what we do
From Moabit to your door in Dornbirn
We have no branch in Dornbirn; instead we come by lorry from Berlin. That is why we ask about access, floor and parking space in advance – whether a flat in the Markt district, a house in Hatlerdorf or a mountain hamlet such as Ebnit. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuable items. We coordinate the date with the key handover; you then complete registration with the Meldezettel at the town hall.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Dornbirn
Districts of Dornbirn at a glance
Dornbirn is divided into several distinctive districts: the Markt quarter forms the historic centre with shops, cafés and the Kulturhaus. Schoren and Rohrbach score with modern housing and good connections to companies such as Zumtobel. Hatlerdorf and Haselstauden offer village charm with short distances to nature, while Oberdorf impresses with its historic village centre and farmhouses.
If you prefer things quieter, the higher-lying mountain hamlets such as Ebnit offer peace and mountain views, but you need to allow for longer journey times. For each of these locations, we clarify access and floor in advance and plan your move accordingly.
Housing market and quality of life in Dornbirn

The City of Dornbirn's collection of ordinances explains that ordinances limited to a maximum of six months, as well as ordinances announced by traffic signs or road markings, are not included in the collection. According to the city, they are available for inspection in the relevant specialist departments. A parking restriction for a move is usually temporary, so contacting the city directly is the right approach.
According to dornbirn.at, you can reach the city as follows:
- Address: Amt der Stadt Dornbirn, Rathausplatz 2, 6850 Dornbirn

In Austria, you register your new residence with the Meldezettel (registration form). According to dornbirn.at, the responsible office is "Stadt Dornbirn, Standesamt, Meldeamt und Wohnen" (registry, registration and housing). To register, you need a completed Meldezettel signed both by you and by the person providing your accommodation, for example your landlord.
As proof, the city requires either a passport or a birth certificate together with proof of citizenship. Non-Austrian nationals must always present a travel document.

According to the city, the registration requirement applies to everyone who takes up accommodation at an address, with a few exceptions. The page does not give a deadline in days; under the Austrian Registration Act (Meldegesetz) you must register no later than three days after moving in. Have your landlord sign the Meldezettel before moving day and check that your passport is valid, so that registration works at the first appointment.
