Moving to Dijon: Your Fresh Start in the Heart of Burgundy
Tips and deadlines
Dijon is the capital of the Côte-d'Or department and was the capital of the former Burgundy region – known for mustard, good food and the Route des Grands Crus wine road, which begins south of the city. Since 2022, the Cité internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin has showcased the region's food culture. The Vieille Ville (old town), with its narrow lanes and pedestrian zones, sits alongside residential neighbourhoods such as Montchapet and Toison d'Or; two tram lines connect the districts. For your move, what counts is access, the floor and a parking space in front of the building.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 1,071 km via the A9, A4 and A5 to the Upper Rhine, then on the French motorways A36 and A39 to Dijon. By lorry, that is about sixteen and a half hours including breaks – which we can only manage with two drivers or an overnight stop. Within the EU, your household goods need no customs papers. We quote the fixed price after the survey. More on this: Planning a move to France.

What we take care of when you move to Dijon
From Berlin all the way to Burgundy
We have no branch in France; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a period building in the Vieille Ville, a flat in Fontaine d'Ouche or a house in Montchapet. We apply for the parking space via the city's online service. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

From
planning to assembly
A move to Dijon needs good planning: from searching for a flat in sought-after neighbourhoods such as Clemenceau, to transferring electricity, internet and bank accounts, through to health insurance. France has no general registration requirement like Germany's. We help with a schedule worked backwards from move-in day. You should also check furniture dimensions, because older buildings often have narrow stairs. We apply for the parking space in front of the building via the city's online service "Je déménage", in good time before moving day.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Dijon
Districts of Dijon at a glance
The Vieille Ville delights with historic charm, narrow lanes and pedestrian zones – ideal for anyone who values urban flair without a car. If you are looking for more peace, Montchapet and Fontaine d'Ouche offer green residential areas with good connections to tram lines T1 and T2.
Families appreciate the Toison d'Or district with its large shopping centre and nearby schools, while students at the Université de Bourgogne mainly live in the Montmuzard neighbourhood near the campus. The up-and-coming Grésilles quarter offers lower rents while urban renewal is under way.
Housing market, employers and quality of life in Dijon
The old town and Toison d'Or are among the more expensive residential areas, while other neighbourhoods are cheaper. Important employers include the CHU Dijon Bourgogne, the wine trade along the Route des Grands Crus, and the Cité internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin, which strengthens Dijon as a culinary centre. Logistics and retail companies in the surrounding area also create numerous jobs.
Quality of life in Dijon is considered particularly high: short distances, an extensive cycle network, numerous parks such as the Jardin Darcy and a lively food scene make the city attractive to families, students and commuters to Paris alike.

Moving price check: these factors count
Besides the volume, the distance (from €3.85/km) is decisive for the price. Structural conditions such as the floor and lift, as well as a parking restriction zone, can increase the effort further. We are also happy to support you with furniture assembly and a part load.

Dijon: applying to the city for a parking space for the removal van
On 6 October 2025, the City of Dijon launched an online service called "Je déménage". According to the city, it is aimed at residents and businesses who are loading or unloading and need a permit to use public space, either for parking spaces or for access to pedestrian streets without parking. You can find it on the eservices.dijon.fr portal under the "Vie quotidienne" tab. The simplified form replaces the previous channels, including the paper forms. Applications are processed by the Direction Réglementation de l'Espace Public.
- Lead time: according to the city, processing usually takes 15 days. For access to pedestrian streets, it is 48 hours. So allow at least two weeks.
- Fee: in a sample arrêté (order) from the city (No. 25-AT-12027, move on 19.09.2025), a parking ban was imposed on 2 spaces. The flat rate was 12 euros per day and space, collected by Keolis Dijon Mobilités on behalf of Dijon Métropole. The amount in your own notice is what applies.
- Signage and display: in the same arrêté, the removal company puts up the traffic signs. The order must be displayed visibly on site and placed behind the windscreen of the vehicles in the reserved space.
If you have questions about the application, you can write to the city at [email protected]; according to the city, the reception desks also help with filling it in. The counterpart in Berlin is our parking restriction zone at the loading location.
Dijon: pedestrian streets, resident parking and customs
If your new address is on a pedestrian street, access is arranged via the same online service of the city and, according to the city, processed within 48 hours. If your street is on the tram line, the city requires an application for a works permit (DAT) from Keolis in advance for any work nearby. In that case, ask early.
After moving in, parking is the main concern. According to the city's page on stationnement (as of 16 December 2024), resident parking applies to residents of paid zones:
- Centre: 2 euros per day or 25 euros per month in long-stay on-street spaces (520 spaces).
- Outer zones: 1 euro per day or 10 euros per month, for example in the Gare nord, Parc, Montchapet, Gare sud and Tivoli-Transvaal sectors. In the Hyacinthe Vincent sector, it is 0.50 euros per day or 5 euros per month.
- Requirement: according to the city, the housing tax and vehicle registration document must be in the same name and at the same address. The proof goes to the DiviaMobilités agency (16 Place Darcy) or via your account on divia.fr.
On customs: according to German Customs (Zoll), you can bring goods from any EU country duty-free if they are intended for your personal use or consumption; cash of 10,000 euros or more must be declared if you are asked. Customs' special rules for household removals apply to moves from non-EU countries, not from EU states. All the steps for France are summarised in the guide Moving to France: customs, formalities and process, and the route is described in the long-distance moving guide for France.
