From Berlin to the Rhône Valley: 1 113 km to Sion (Sitten)

Planning and route
Long-distance move to Sion: two driving days, one customs stop and registration in Valais
From Moabit to the Rhône Valley
A move to Sion (German: Sitten) is one of our longest long-distance moves: from our depot in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) it is 1,113 road kilometres. The route runs via the A9 and A4 to Hesse, on the A5 through the Rhine Valley to Basel, then via the Swiss A2 and A1 to Bern, on the A12 towards Vevey and finally on the A9 into the Rhône Valley. Because Switzerland is not part of the EU, your household goods are cleared by customs at the border near Basel. A lorry needs two driving days for this.
For the import you present the signed Form 18.44 and an inventory list; we draw up the list with you while packing and schedule the border crossing for a working day on which the customs office for commercial goods is open. In Sion itself, French is predominantly spoken – offices, forms and parking signs are mostly labelled in French. We quote the fixed price after the survey, with the heavy vehicle charge and overnight stop included. Services such as packing and assembly can be found under private move; you can call us on 01625978461.

How your long-distance move to Valais works
Four steps, two driving days
First we survey your flat in Berlin and record the volume, floors and special items – this also produces the inventory list for Swiss customs. On loading day we pack and load, stay overnight on the way in line with the driving-time rules and clear customs at a customs office for commercial goods near Basel. Then we continue via Bern and Lake Geneva into the Rhône Valley to Sion, where we unload and assemble the furniture. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB; we discuss additional insurance for valuable items in advance. We clarify access and the parking card before the appointment.

Frequently asked questions about the long-distance move to Sion
Customs on a move to Sion: what you prepare yourself
As Switzerland is not a member of the EU, your belongings are cleared when crossing the border. For a private move to Sion you present Form 18.44 of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG); with it you import furniture and personal items duty-free. The requirement is that you actually move your residence to Switzerland and have used the household goods personally for at least six months.
We draw up the inventory list together with you while packing; you must sign the form and list yourself. The change of residence is proven, for example, by an employment contract, tenancy agreement or deregistration certificate. People moving from EU and EFTA states do not need an assurance of a permit for this. That way you avoid queries at the border.
The route: 1,113 km via Basel, Bern and Lake Geneva
Sion (German: Sitten) is the capital of the canton of Valais and lies in the middle of the Rhône Valley. From Berlin it is 1,113 km: A9 and A4 to Hesse, A5 to Basel, via the Swiss A2 and A1 to Bern, on the A12 down to Lake Geneva near Vevey and then on the A9 through the Rhône Valley. For a lorry that is around 15 hours of pure driving time, so two driving days with an overnight stop. Around 70 per cent of the inhabitants speak French as their first language.
For move planning this means: the Old Town beneath the Valère and Tourbillon hills is narrow, and the removal van often needs an agreed parking space there. The regional police PRVC are responsible for parking on public land, and we clarify the options before the appointment. That way your move to Valais goes ahead without nasty surprises.

Sion: customs, LSVA and driving bans for the removal lorry
Swiss customs rules apply to a move to Sion (Sitten) in Valais. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) names the transfer of your residence to Switzerland as the most important condition for duty-free import. The items must have been used for at least six months. You declare your belongings with Form 18.44 and the list of removal goods during the opening hours of a customs office for commercial goods. Furniture, valuables and larger appliances are listed individually, while small items may appear as collective entries (for example boxes of books).
For the lorry itself, the BAZG states:
- Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay the LSVA (performance-related heavy vehicle charge) on all roads.
- A night driving ban applies from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., as well as a Sunday and public holiday driving ban.
- At the border the lorry lane must be used, and the customs office can prohibit onward travel if the load exceeds the weight in the vehicle documents.
The car is declared directly on import; Swiss registration takes place at the cantonal road traffic office (Strassenverkehrsamt), with customs coming first. If proof is missing, the customs office can carry out a provisional clearance on application against security. For importing the household goods themselves, the BAZG sets no fixed deadline: they should be imported in connection with the change of residence, and two years are considered unproblematic. More on this in our customs guide for Switzerland and in the Sion guide.
Sion: police parking card, residents' registration office and arrival
In Sion, the Police Régionale des Villes du Centre (PRVC) is responsible for parking on public land, with its counter at Place de la Gare 11 (telephone 027 327 61 19; Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1.30 to 5 p.m.). The PRVC sells scratch-off parking cards for businesses at 6 francs per half day or 12 francs per day. According to the PRVC, the card is only valid for a commercial vehicle of a trade business; it does not entitle you to a space and does not allow parking in prohibited places. In pedestrian zones it is only valid with prior permission from the PRVC. Check with the PRVC in advance whether it is an option for a removal van; our team will advise you during planning.
For registration in the city there is the residents' registration office (Contrôle des habitants) at Espace des Remparts 6. According to the city, the counter is open every morning from 8.30 to 11.30 a.m., free of charge and usually without an appointment. Under the cantonal law on residents' registration, the registration deadline is 14 days. For longer parking as a resident, the city offers vignettes; according to the city they cost 420 francs per year (zone 1) or 300 francs (zones 2 to 14); the city publishes the charging zones and tariffs as a PDF.
