Solothurn: a small town with baroque charm and good rail links
The first few weeks
Solothurn is the capital of the canton of the same name, has just under 17,000 inhabitants and lies at the southern foot of the Jura on both banks of the Aare. Because of its many baroque buildings, the old town is sometimes called "the most beautiful baroque town in Switzerland", and as the former seat of the French ambassador also the "Ambassadors' Town". For moves, the old town is demanding: according to the city, a night-time driving ban applies there from 19.00 to 6.00, and during the day many streets can only be entered with a special permit. More about our home removal service.

What
newcomers should sort out early
Moving to Solothurn raises typical questions: how do I register with the residents' services, which parking rules apply in the old town and the blue zones, and where does the rubbish go? In the old town there are two underground collection points for fee-paying bags, while glass and textiles go to collection points such as the Ritterquai. If you are starting with a local employer, plan registration and your permit before your first working day. We are happy to advise you on choosing between a home removal and a company move.

Questions about living in Solothurn
Old town, Vorstadt, Weststadt: Solothurn's districts
The old town north of the Aare largely took on its present form between the 16th and 18th centuries; the Hauptgasse leads in a gentle curve from the Stalden to St. Ursus Cathedral. South of the Aare lies the Vorstadt, connected to the old town by the Wengi bridge.
In the west, the Weststadt was built from the 1970s under the "Brühl development plan", with the Riedmatt blocks, the town's first high-rise buildings. In the 20th century, districts such as Dilitsch, Obere Steingruben, St. Kathrinen and the Südstadt also grew. Which location suits you depends on your car, commute and school – if in doubt, it is worth viewing at different times of day.
