Moving with assembly: tick it off before the first wardrobe is taken apart

Nothing forgotten

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), takes your furniture apart, labels every part and reassembles everything in the new flat.

Most problems with a move with assembly do not arise when screwing things together but beforehand: the wardrobe does not fit under the sloping ceiling, the instructions are gone, the cooker has no connection appointment. With this checklist you go through the points in the right order – from the measurements of the new flat and photos of the assembled furniture to what should still be checked on the evening of moving day.

We take care of dismantling, labelling the parts, transport and reassembly; your part is decisions and appointments. Note which furniture is coming along, which is being disposed of and what goes on the wall. For the cooker, hob and gas appliances you need a qualified specialist – that is not part of furniture assembly. What we take on for dismantling and reassembly is on the page move with assembly; if you are moving far away, also read the overview long-distance moves.

CLARIFY BEFOREHAND

Four things that should be settled before dismantling

So that nobody has to search on moving day

We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and, for a move with assembly, take care of dismantling, transporting and reassembling your furniture. For this to work without follow-up questions, we need four things from you: a layout plan, a list of the furniture to be taken apart, information on what goes on the wall, and clear access in both flats. We are liable for damage to your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of cargo space; for valuable items, additional insurance makes sense.

Layout plan

Sketch which piece of furniture goes into which room, and stick the room sign on the door in the new flat.

Furniture list

Note what will be taken apart, what is transported in one piece and what is disposed of – furniture that is not coming along should not be loaded in the first place.

Wall-mounted fittings

Wall cupboards, shelves, lamps, TV: write down what should go on the wall and whether cables or pipes might run there.

Clear routes

Hallways, stairwell and set-down areas should be clear; outside the building a parking restriction zone helps so that the lorry can park close by.
EASILY OVERLOOKED

Six points that are often forgotten

These points are missing from many lists and only become apparent on moving day – when the wardrobe lies in pieces in the hallway. Tick them off before the first screw is loosened on your move with assembly; most of them only take you a few minutes.

01

Photos of the set-up

Photograph wardrobes, shelves and the cables behind the TV while they are still assembled – that helps with reassembly more than any memory.
02

Alcove measurements

Measure alcoves, door widths and the ceiling height under sloping ceilings before deciding where the tall wardrobe should stand.
03

Instructions

Collect any assembly instructions you have in a folder; many manufacturers offer missing ones as PDF downloads.
04

Washing machine

Refit the washing machine's transit bolts and let the water drain from the hoses before it is carried.
05

Fridge

Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer the day before, so that no water runs into boxes or furniture during transport.
06

Deadline for damage

Report visible damage no later than the day after delivery, hidden damage within 14 days (§ 451f HGB) – otherwise claims lapse.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Little to move? Part load!

When only individual pieces of furniture are moving

If your list only has a dismantled wardrobe, a bed and a few boxes, a shared load can be cheaper than a lorry of your own: your belongings travel on the same tour as other orders. In return there is a time window instead of a fixed appointment.

TIMETABLE

Four
weeks, one week, one day

When each point belongs on the list

The checklist for a move with assembly can be split into three stages: measurements and appointments weeks beforehand, clearing out and photos a few days beforehand, handover and checks on moving day. How to take individual pieces of furniture apart yourself is covered in the article Dismantling and assembling furniture; if only assembly is needed, furniture assembly can help. How to get the parking restriction outside the building is explained in the guide to the parking restriction zone.

A few weeks beforehand

Measure the new flat, draw a layout plan, make a furniture list and arrange a survey. Book appointments with an electrician or gas fitter if the cooker or gas appliances need connecting. Apply for the parking restriction.

In the week before

Empty wardrobes, take down pictures and lamps, photograph assembled furniture, get instructions ready. Defrost the fridge and find the washing machine's transit bolts. Clearly mark furniture that is not coming along.

On moving day

Show the team the layout plan and the marked furniture. After reassembly, check doors, drawers, bed frames and the tip-over protection on tall wardrobes. Note anything you notice straight away – report visible damage by the next day at the latest.

FAQ

Frequent questions

Questions on preparing a move with assembly – from photos and the kitchen to reporting damage.
A move with assembly covers taking the agreed furniture apart in the old flat, transport and reassembly in the new one. Which furniture is included is stated in the quote – your list is the basis for it. Wall fittings such as wall cupboards or shelves are listed explicitly, so that it is clear on moving day what will be done.

What belongs on the list before dismantling

Start with the new flat: measure alcoves, door widths and the height under sloping ceilings, and draw a layout plan in which every larger piece of furniture has a place. That way you see early on whether the wardrobe will fit against the planned wall at all, or whether it should be modified, shortened or sold. Then comes the furniture list: what will be taken apart, what travels in one piece, what will be disposed of?

In the week before the move, the practical points follow. Empty wardrobes and chests of drawers, take down pictures, mirrors and lamps, and photograph furniture and cable connections while still assembled. Existing instructions go into a folder that travels with your belongings. We collect the screws themselves during dismantling in labelled bags that are attached to the relevant furniture part.

Do not forget the kitchen, appliances and wall fittings

For the kitchen, more belongs on the list than unscrewing the cupboards. The electric cooker, oven and hob are connected by a qualified electrician; under § 13 NDAV, work on the gas line may only be carried out by the network operator or a registered installation company. Plan these appointments early, otherwise the kitchen will be set up but without a cooker. Defrost the fridge the day before and fit the washing machine with its transit bolts.

For everything that should go on the wall, note the location and weight: wall cupboards, heavy shelves and TVs need a load-bearing wall and suitable wall plugs. If in doubt, ask the landlord where cables and pipes run. Tall, narrow wardrobes should be fixed with the supplied tip-over protection – especially if children live in the household.

Price factors in a move: what you should know

Besides the pure moving volume, the distance in kilometres (from €3.90/km) also has a considerable influence on the final price. The floor, lift and setting up a parking restriction zone also play a part. If you wish, you can also add furniture assembly or a shared load.
