Moving to Berlin: Costs Process & Districts

Guide for new Berliners
Arriving in Berlin: borough, Bürgeramt, no-parking zone
Boroughs, deadlines, costs
Berlin attracts many new residents every year – because of the job opportunities, the universities or city life. The capital is divided into twelve boroughs, each with many neighbourhoods and its own character. From the start-up scene in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg to the green residential areas in Pankow or Steglitz-Zehlendorf, there is something for every lifestyle. If you plan the move properly, you will quickly feel at home in your new neighbourhood (Kiez).
We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and plan moves to all boroughs: from period flats in rear courtyards to new builds with lifts. You apply to the borough for the no-parking zone in front of your new address with around four weeks' lead time – we tell you the length and period. With our private move service (find out more) we take care of planning, transport and assembly at a fixed price after a survey, also as a long-distance move from other federal states (details on long-distance moves). Call us on 01625978461.

Borough,
Bürgeramt, no-parking zone
A move to Berlin raises many organisational questions: registration at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) within 14 days, electricity and internet, health insurance or finding a nursery in the new borough. Especially in sought-after neighbourhoods such as Friedrichshain or Prenzlauer Berg, early planning is important, because the no-parking zone takes around four weeks with the borough and Bürgeramt appointments are in demand. We take care of the transport, align the move-in date with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) and tell you which deadline runs when. More on this in the guide for newcomers to Berlin.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Berlin
Berlin's boroughs at a glance: where is a move worthwhile?
Berlin has the right borough for every taste. Mitte scores with its central location and short distances but is one of the expensive areas. Prenzlauer Berg is popular with young families because of its period buildings, playgrounds and cafés, while Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg are known for culture, nightlife and an international neighbourhood.
If you are looking for more peace and greenery, you will find alternatives with good connections to the centre in Pankow, Charlottenburg or Steglitz-Zehlendorf. Neukölln, with its diverse food scene, is also in demand. We ourselves are based in Moabit in the borough of Mitte and drive from there to all boroughs.
Housing market, employers & quality of life in Berlin
The Berlin housing market is tight, and rents vary greatly by borough, year of construction and location; current figures are shown in the rent index (Mietspiegel) and on property portals. Major employers include the Charité, Deutsche Bahn, Siemens and Zalando, plus numerous start-ups and the public sector. Students come to universities such as Humboldt University, Freie Universität and TU Berlin.
Quality of life in Berlin is shaped by a dense network of U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus, green spaces such as the Tiergarten or Tempelhofer Feld and an international atmosphere. Culture, nightlife and culinary variety make the capital attractive for career starters, families and creative people. If you are planning a move to Berlin, you will find many opportunities here.

How your individual moving price is calculated
First we determine the volume of your belongings, then the distance (from €3.85/km). The floor and a lift determine the staffing effort, while a parking restriction zone saves time. If needed, we add a shared load.

No-parking zone for a move in Berlin: borough, informal application and fee
In Berlin you apply for the no-parking zone for your move to the road traffic authority of the borough in which it is to apply. According to the service portal service.berlin.de, depending on the borough this authority is part of the public order office (Ordnungsamt) or the roads and green spaces office (Straßen- und Grünflächenamt). An informal application stating the location, length, period and reason is required. According to the portal, the minimum fee is 21 euros, and it can rise depending on the scope and duration. Processing takes about four weeks on average; the legal basis is the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).
The authority issues an order but no traffic signs. You obtain the signs from a construction site safety company, and they may only be put up once the order has been issued. Examples of contacts according to the portal: Mitte (roads and green spaces office, Karl-Marx-Allee 31) and Pankow (road traffic authority, Storkower Straße 97). For Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Steglitz-Zehlendorf, the portal refers to the borough websites.
- Plan the application about four weeks before the date
- check separately for the moving-out and moving-in address whether a no-parking zone is needed
- order signs from a construction site safety company
If your address is in a borough whose procedure differs, it is worth checking the website of the relevant borough office.
Our service can be found under parking restriction zone, and the steps in the guide to the parking restriction zone. For your borough: Moving in Berlin-Mitte and Moving in Prenzlauer Berg.
Registering in Berlin after the move: Bürgeramt, deadline and landlord confirmation
After moving in to Berlin, you must register at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt). According to service.berlin.de, the deadline is 14 days after moving in; registration is free of charge. You make the appointment at the Bürgeramt of your choice, and the portal also refers to the public authority number 115. If someone represents you, you need a written power of attorney.
According to the portal, online registration is possible, but only for adults with German or EU citizenship. For this you need a BundID account and an ID card or eID card with the online ID function activated and a PIN.
The portal requires these documents:
- landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) with signature, move-in date and the names of the persons required to register; a tenancy agreement does not replace it
- ID card or passport
- depending on the situation, declarations of consent for children or civil status certificates for the first registration in Berlin
More on deadlines and the online route can be found in our guides Re-registering after a move: deadlines and Re-registering online. What everyday life in the city looks like is described in the guide for newcomers to Berlin.
Ask your landlord for the landlord confirmation early, as it must be available on the day of the appointment. We coordinate the key handover and our date so that the move-in date in the confirmation is correct.
