Floor protection during a winter move: parquet stairwell, entrance

Floor protection in winter
Protected from the pavement to the parquet
Mats, fleece, a plan
During a winter move, movers walk back and forth dozens of times between the vehicle and the flat. Every trip brings snow, wet and grit into the building. In Berlin, road salt is banned on pavements, so grit or sand is used instead – and it is exactly these little grains that scratch parquet and tile glaze. That is why we plan walking routes and coverings during the survey, so that the entrance, hallway and living spaces are protected before the first piece of furniture comes in.
Protection is needed at both addresses: in the old flat the handover is coming up, and in the new one the floor should stay immaculate. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Whether a private move or a commercial move – tell us in advance which floors are delicate. Call us on 01625978461 for advice with no obligation.

Planning floor protection during the survey
Fixed price after a survey, walking routes agreed
During the survey we look at the floors, stairwell and lift and decide where coverings are needed. That way the protection is planned into the fixed price. Whether a local move or a long-distance move – give us a call to agree your preferred date in winter.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we keep snow and grit outside
Walking routes with a plan
Before we carry anything, we set the walking routes: from the vehicle across the pavement, entrance and stairwell into the rooms. At the entrance a mat catches coarse dirt, in the hallway protective fleece protects the floor, and at tight corners edge protection protects the walls. It is best to photograph any damage that was already there before we start. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and travel nationwide. We quote the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

What we pay attention to with floor protection
In winter, the coverings decide whether a move is clean. Mats at the entrance, fleece on the floor and protection for stairs and lift keep wet and grit outside – in the old flat as well as the new one.

Part load with a clean handover
For single pieces of furniture or a few boxes, a part load (Beiladung) is a low-cost solution. In winter we agree a time window with a little buffer in case icy conditions delay the tour, and even for small quantities we only carry into your flat along protected walking routes.

Clean
floors despite the snow
The tenth part of our winter series is about the way into the building. Otherwise snow, slush and gritting material end up on parquet, laminate and carpet. Whether a private move or a long-distance move across several federal states: we show which covering belongs where, why grit is worse than water and how to protect the stairwell and lift. Then there is the handover of the old flat, where marks on the floor can cause trouble with the landlord. And because wet tiles in the hallway are slippery, good floor protection in winter is always fall protection for movers and residents too.

Frequently asked questions on floor protection in winter
Grit, salt and slush: what damages floors
On Berlin pavements road salt is banned; grit or sand is used instead. This is kind to plants but tricky for floors: the hard grains get stuck in shoe treads and sack-truck wheels and scratch parquet, floorboards and tile glaze. On the road, by contrast, salt is often used – it comes into the building with the slush and leaves white marks on carpet and wood. Wet alone makes the edges of laminate swell.
So put large dirt-trapping mats in front of and behind the front door, cover the hallway and walking routes with absorbent fleece and sweep the entrance from time to time. You can read about who has to clear and grit in front of the building in the article Clearing and gritting duties on moving day.
Protecting the stairwell, lift and handover
The stairwell does not belong to you but to all tenants. Inform the property management and neighbours about the moving date in advance, and ask for protective mats for the lift. Edge protection on banisters, door frames and tight corners prevents dents, and non-slip mats on the landings give grip when snow sticks to the soles.
Photograph floors, stairs and the lift before starting – that clarifies later which scratches were already there. In the old flat, only remove the coverings after the last trip and give the floor a once-over with a damp mop. What else counts when handing back the flat is explained in the article Handing over the flat broom-clean.
