Senior moves part 6

Leaving a home in which a whole life has taken place

Moving gently

Unsere Firma Farewell rituals, familiar furniture and the first week in the new flat: the emotional side of a senior move.

A senior move is rarely just a question of boxes. Anyone leaving a flat after forty or fifty years leaves behind neighbours, habits and many memories. Grief, uncertainty or even anger about the decision are normal – especially when the move becomes necessary for health reasons. It helps to give these feelings room instead of letting them get lost in the organising. With our private move service we therefore deliberately plan without time pressure and explain every step.

In practice this means: a farewell visit from neighbours before moving day, photos of every room, and familiar furniture set up first in the new flat. On request, we assemble the bed, armchair and favourite lamp first so that the first evening feels familiar. We are based in Berlin and drive nationwide – destinations with their own page can be found under Locations, including for a long-distance move closer to the children. We quote the fixed price after the survey.

GENTLE AND CALM

How we make the farewell easier

A pace that suits your needs

We know that memories come up on moving day. That is why we work calmly, ask before we pack anything and give you time for one last walk through the rooms. In the new flat we arrange familiar furniture the way you are used to. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and quote the fixed price after a survey. Destinations with their own page can be found under Locations.

Taking time

We plan moving day with a buffer so that nobody is rushed – not even during the last look into the empty rooms of the old flat.

Packing service

With our packing service we ask about personal items instead of simply packing them – and label boxes with keepsakes separately.

Familiar things first

We set up the bed, armchair, pictures and favourite lamp first in the new flat, so that the first evening already feels a little like home.

Relatives welcome

Children, grandchildren or friends are welcome during the move and can keep the older person company while we take care of boxes and furniture.
SHAPING THE FAREWELL

Six ways to make the farewell easier

A farewell cannot be organised, but it can be shaped. These six ideas have helped many older people leave their old home well and embrace the new one.

01

Talk about it

Open conversations about wishes and fears ease the burden. Relatives should listen rather than talk feelings away with arguments for the move.
02

Photograph the rooms

Photos of every room, the view from the window and the stairwell preserve the memory of the flat – even without every piece of furniture.
03

Celebrate the farewell

A coffee with the neighbours or a last family meal in the old flat gives the farewell a dignified and cheerful setting.
04

Bring familiar things

A favourite armchair, pictures and familiar bed linen make the new flat feel familiar from the first day – more important than new furniture.
05

A familiar layout

Arrange furniture as before where possible: armchair by the window, bedside table on the same side. This makes orientation easier.
06

Make contacts

In the first few weeks, visits, a walk around the neighbourhood and finding meeting places nearby help with settling in.
A SMALL HOUSEHOLD

Part load for a few items

When only familiar things come along
A part load uses free cargo space on a trip that is planned anyway. For seniors taking only a few familiar pieces of furniture and boxes, this can reduce costs considerably. Collection and delivery dates are less freely selectable; you can still book assembly in the new flat as well.

TOPICS IN PART 6

Farewell
and arrival

Feelings when moving in later life

Part 6 of the series is about the side of moving that is in no checklist: saying goodbye to the old home and settling into the new one. We show how relatives can help without restricting the seniors' independence, why familiar furniture matters more than perfect furnishings and how the first weeks in the new place can go well. We also answer practical questions about the parking restriction zone or assisted living. What we take on with a private move takes the load off the whole family.

Taking feelings seriously

Grief and uncertainty are part of moving in later life. Addressing them and planning time usually makes the senior move or private move calmer – for the older person and for the whole family.

Packing familiar things properly

With a gentle packing service and careful furniture transport, pictures, crockery and heirlooms arrive intact. We label boxes of memories separately so that they can be unpacked first.

The first week

Visits, a fixed daily routine and first outings into the neighbourhood help with settling in. Furniture for children and grandchildren can be sent on later by part load, so that only the essentials have to be moved on the actual moving day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about farewell and a fresh start in later life

Farewell, relatives, parking restrictions, costs and liability.
Look for providers who take time for advice, offer a survey and only then quote a fixed price. Consideration for walking aids, medication and the older person's pace is important. Ask about liability: by law, €620 per cubic metre applies (§ 451e HGB), and additional insurance is usually available on request. That way you ensure the move goes ahead with dignity and without stress.

Planning for accessibility: making the new flat senior-friendly

When moving into a new flat, it pays to think about accessibility early on. Wide doors, non-slip floors and easy-to-reach sockets make everyday life considerably easier and help prevent falls.

During the move planning, our team already advises where furniture can sensibly be placed to avoid trip hazards. That way the new flat becomes a safe and comfortable retreat from the start.

Letting go and starting afresh: shaping the farewell consciously

A move in later life is often more than a logistical process: it means saying goodbye to a familiar home, to neighbours and habits. Feelings such as grief or resistance are normal and should be given room. Small rituals help – a last coffee with the neighbours, photos of every room, a conscious walk through the empty flat. We plan moving day with enough time for this.

In the new flat, familiar things count: if the bed, armchair and pictures stand as before, orientation becomes easier. Relatives can contribute a great deal by unpacking together and visiting regularly in the first few weeks. That way the move becomes a successful fresh start not only in organisational but also in emotional terms.

Estimating the price of your move
