Plants in winter

Houseplants warm into their new home

Wrap up, travel warm

Unsere Firma Many houseplants come from warm regions – how to protect them on their way through the cold and in their new spot.

Monstera, ficus and orchids come from warm regions and do not cope well with cold – some are damaged at temperatures just above zero, and most do not survive frost. During a winter move a few minutes therefore make all the difference: how long does the plant stand on the pavement, and how cold is it in the cargo space? At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we load plants last and unload them first at the destination if you wish. We clarify the rest of the process for your private move during the survey.

Worth knowing: under § 451d HGB, the removal company may be exempt from liability for damage arising from the transport of live plants. Delicate favourite plants are therefore best carried in your own heated car. For everything else, liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) applies, and additional insurance is available on request. For long-distance moves in winter, we plan with you which plants travel how. We give you the fixed price after the survey.

PACKED WITH CARE

How we handle plants during a move

Last in, first out

We carry large plants such as yucca or ficus upright and with the crown wrapped so that no leaves snap. In the van they stand secured and not next to heavy furniture. Small and delicate plants are best taken along by you. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide. Your belongings are covered under the HGB.

Packing service

With our packing service we wrap pots and crowns in paper and stand small plants close together in boxes so they don't tip over.

Office move

During an office move, large office plants often come along. We carry them into the van last and set them up first in the new office.

Senior moves

With a senior move, many people are attached to their plants. We pack them carefully and look for a bright spot by the new window together.

Furniture transport

During furniture transport, plants stand secured in the van and at a distance from furniture so that no branches break when braking.
KEEPING AN EYE ON PLANTS

What matters with plants in winter

During a winter move, houseplants need one thing above all: as little cold as possible. Good packaging, short routes and a calm fresh start in their new spot help them through the move.

01

Water in advance

Water a few days before the move, not on the morning itself. Wet soil is heavy, cools down faster and can freeze in the cold cargo space.
02

Wrap the crown

Wrap plants loosely in packing paper or fleece and close the cover at the top. That way warm air stays around the leaves.
03

Pots in a box

Stand small pots close together in a box and fill the gaps with paper. That way nothing tips over and the soil stays in the pot.
04

Load last

Plants go into the van last and come out first at the destination. That way the time in the cold is kept as short as possible during the move.
05

Favourites in the car

Delicate plants are best carried in your own warm car. In winter the cargo space of a lorry is unheated.
06

A calm fresh start

Unpack plants slowly at the destination and put them somewhere bright, but not directly against the radiator. Only feed them once they have settled in.
SMALL LOADS IN WINTER

Part load – without plants

Save on small loads

For single pieces of furniture or a few boxes, a part load is an affordable solution: your belongings travel on a tour that is already planned. In winter, however, you should not send houseplants along – with several stops they stand in the cold cargo space for a long time. It is better to take them in your own car.

Plants
safely through the winter

So that you can relax

The twelfth part of our winter series is about your houseplants. They are among the most delicate things in a household: a few minutes in frost can be enough for leaves to turn brown or drop. We show how to prepare, pack and transport plants and how to make their start in the new spot easier. For a private move, we clarify in advance what goes into the van and what you take with you.

Preparing and packing

Water in advance, paper around the crown, pots packed tightly in a box: this is how plants arrive unharmed on a private move, senior move or student move, even in frost – without brown leaves or toppled pots.

Short trips in the cold

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and flexible small removals, we load plants last and unload them first. That way they spend only a few minutes in the cold, never on the pavement.

Offices and special cases

With an office move and company relocation, large plants often come along, which we transport upright and secured; with a part load or furniture taxi they are better off travelling separately in winter.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about plants on a winter move

Answers on plants, the cold and the process.
Yes, with good preparation a winter move is just as safe as one in summer. Away from the turn of the month and public holidays, dates are often easier to get. What matters are cleared paths, a time buffer for ice and protecting delicate items such as plants and electronics from the cold.

Preparing and packing plants

Water your houseplants two to three days before the move and not on moving day itself: wet soil is heavier, cools down faster and can freeze in the cold van. Cut back long shoots or tie them loosely together.

Wrap each plant in packing paper, newspaper or garden fleece and close the cover above the crown. Stand small pots close together in a box and fill the gaps with paper. You will find more tips in the article Moving plants.

Transport and arrival without cold shock

In winter, the cargo space of a removal van is as cold as the air outside. Plants should therefore be loaded last and unloaded first at the destination. Delicate plants are best carried in your own heated car. Never leave them in front of the building while other things are being carried.

Unpack the plants slowly in the warm flat and put them somewhere bright, but not directly against the radiator. It is a normal stress reaction for a ficus to lose leaves after a move.
